Memorial tribute to honor Coach Annarella The Coach Phil Annarella Memorial Tribute will take place, rain or shine, on Aug. 23 at Greenwood Chevrolet Falcon Stadium. The event will features a 5:15 p.m. freshman football scrimmage against Akron Buchtel, 6 p.m. junior varsity/varsity scrimmage against Akron Buchtel and an 8 p.m. memorial tribute to Coach Annarella, featuring his family.

Weekly square dance lessons to begin Sept. 10 The Niles Friendly Squares, a local square dance group dedicated to keeping alive the uniquely American art form of square dancing, will begin a new year of weekly square dance lessons. The introductory session will be Sept. 10 from 7-9 p.m. Each session builds upon the previous session and will include learning steps along with plenty of review and practice each week to help attendees master the moves. The sessions are designed to cover all the steps in the Basic Square Dance Program. Gene Hammond will be the instructor. The Tuesday evening sessions will run through April 14, 2020. There is a fee of $6 per lesson. The Friendly Squares will also be performing square dance demonstrations at the Canfield Fair on Aug. 29 from 7-8 p.m. on the stage located in front of the International Building.

Akron Children’s Hospital Pediatrics announces new provider Akron Children’s Hospital Pediatrics welcomes new provider Catherine Henson, M.D., to the Mahoning Valley. Dr. Henson is seeing patients in offices in both Boardman, located at 6505 Market St., Building A, and Austintown, located at 5480 Norquest Boulevard. The practices provide pediatric primary care for infants, children and teens. Dr. Henson earned her medical degree from Northeast Ohio Medical University in Rootstown and completed her residency in pediatrics at Akron Children’s Hospital. She also earned a degree in biology from Youngstown State University. She is a resident of Poland and a native of Canfield.

Mill Creek ABWA to have Aug. 13 meeting The Mill Creek Chapter of ABWA (American Business Women’s Association) will host its Aug. 13 meeting at A La Cart Catering in Canfield beginning with networking at 6 p.m. and dinner at 6:30 p.m. The menu will include hot dogs, hamburgers, potato salad, macaroni salad, baked beans, tossed salad, fresh fruit, Jell-O, dessert, coffee and tea. The 711 Music Festival will take place on Aug. 9, with doors opening at 3 p.m., at The Wickyards in Youngstown. The cost to attend is $5. Local music combo to play in the park On Aug. 5, the Jim Frank Combo will perform in Canfield on the green beginning at 7 p.m. The concert is free and open to the public. Austintown Quaker Steak and Lube hosts ceremony dedicated to fallen veterans By JESSICA HARKER jharker@vindy.com

Quaker Steak and Lube in Austintown hosted a dedication ceremony on July 23. The business dedicated six new benches to local fallen soldiers and flags to all branches of military service. “Us at Quaker Steak and Lube are very proud to be a part of this,” said marketing manager Phillip Hall. Hall said that the project was brought to the business by local veterans Ken Jakubec and Leo Connelly. Jakubec said that he and Connelly are both regulars at the Austintown location and noticed the benches needed redone. Connelly then came up with the idea to get new benches donated to the location in memoriam of six local heroes. “We are both very involved in the veterans community and when Leo came up with the idea I thought it was great,” Jakubec said. Five of the six benches were donated to the location by Jen-

ny Kennedy, whose brother is David Eisenbraun whom one of the benches is dedicated to. The last bench was donated by Applegate Furniture, from which all the benches were purchased. “When Applegate heard that Jenny wanted to purchase all of the benches they were so moved they wanted to donate one to us,” Connelly said. Ken Carano hosted the ceremony, dedicating the benches to the local heroes. AnnaMaria Jadue, a graduate of Austintown Fitch High School and Youngstown State University, sang the National Anthem at the event. Gold star family members from each of the fallen soldiers were present at the event, according to Connelly. “We were very honored to have all of the gold star families here with us today,” Connelly said. “This is only a small thing that we can do to thank them for their sacrifice.” Connelly and Jakubec are also involved in Quaker Steak and Lube’s annual Patriots Day

Busters Brigade donates chip scanners By JESSICA HARKER jharker@vindy.com

The Busters Brigade partnered with local law enforcement to reconnect lost dogs with their owners. “We do a little bit of everything,” said Trish Collins, a member of the groups board. “It’s just a matter of helping dogs and cats get into the best situation they can.” Collins said the group became concerned when they learned that a number of police stations locally don’t have a chip scanner, forcing many to take dogs and cats that are lost directly to the pound. They created a program to solve this problem, by donating scanners to interested law enforcement. “We just started reaching out and see what the need and interest was,” Collins said. “We were very surprised by the results.” She explained that the first interested group was the Campbell Police Department. After that the group has also donated to Poland, Boardman, Struthers and event Mill Creek Park. The group also reached out to Canfield and Austintown police departments, who already possessed scanners. “It’s just really important to us to connect lost pets back with

their owners as quickly as possible,” Collins said. The Busters Brigade is fairly new to the area, having started in October 2018. The group is a 501c3 organization and has been involved in a wide range of community service. This service includes teaming up with the YSU pre-veterinary group, donating dog food to Second Harvest Food Bank, and

providing financial and material assistance to community members struggling to provide for their pets. “We understand that to a lot of people animals are important members of the family and we just want to make sure animals get to and stay in loving homes,” Collins said. On July 20 at the Austintown Walmart, the Austintown Lions Club had their Mint Day. Club members gratefully accepted donations from area residents in exchange for candy mints. The Lions use the contributions to help sight-impaired Austintown residents (including the blind) and paying for glasses and exams for the needy, Pilot Dogs and the needs for the community of Austintown. Mill Creek Metro Parks hosted it’s annual Trekkers Summer Camp for students ages 10-12. According to Naturalist Lynn Zocolo this year’s theme was Harry Potter’s Herbology and Potions. “They had a blast,” Zocolo said. “At the end of the week they were all friends.” During the week children gathered at Fellows Riverside

Gardens starting at 9 a.m. Zocolo said that they had plant and magic based activities planned every day. “The students were broken into three houses, the oaks, the sassafras and the maples,” Zocolo said. “They competed all week to win the house cup.” Children spent t he week walking through the “enchanted forest,” learning about healing and dangerous plants and event planting their own herb

garden. At the end of the week, Zocolo said that the group spent the final day playing competitive games and celebrating with a feast. “We spent the whole week learning, so today we are going to take a break from that and focus on having fun,” she said. The group also celebrated with a trip to the Log Cabin for lunch and a boat ride on Lake Glaicer.

Mental Health First Aid for youth Mental Health First Aid Training is aimed at helping people whose profession frequently brings them into contact with youth exhibiting problems related to mental illness, substance use, poverty or homelessness. The library is partnering with the Mahoning County Mental Health and Recovery Board and Alta Care Group, which will provide instructors for these events on Aug. 14 and 21 from 5-8:30 p.m. at the Austintown library. Participants in this two-part series will learn risk factors and warning signs in children, as well as strategies for how to help someone in both crisis and non-crisis situations, and where to turn for help. Each participant will also receive a First Aid book. Session 1 will be on Aug. 14 and Session 2 will be Aug. 21. Space is limited; call 330744-8636, ext. 50066, to register for the series. The sessions are available to library staff, as well as people who have jobs in which they could encounter juvenile individuals needing this type of assistance. This program is thanks to a grant from the federal Institute of Museum and Library Services (IMLS) and awarded by the State Library of Ohio, under the Library Services and Technology Act (LSTA). Fellows Riverside Gardens hosted a Family Fun Fridays event on June 21. The event is offered every summer by the park for children and their families. Naturalist Lynn Zocolo organized the event, which runs from

11 a.m. until 1 p.m. “It’s just a fun way to bring the community together and give children the chance to get out doors,” Zocolo said. During the event, children worked on crafts, making bracelets to take home. The park organized bingo and sensory stations for children to

play with. Volunteers also helped run the event, running a science experiment station. Children were able to use glasses of water topped with shaving cream to simulate how rain works. “We use a dropped full of blue food coloring to show that the

clouds can only hold so much weight before the water falls,” Zocolo said. Free face painting was also available to the children. The event is hosted every other Friday throughout the summer. For more information on upcoming park events, go to www. millcreekmetroparks.org.

The Mill Creek MetroParks Farm hosted a lecture on local coyotes on June 20. Cleveland Metroparks Wildlife Ecologist Jon Cepek presented at the event as part of the annual Naturalist Series. The Naturalist Series is a collaboration with the Metro Parks and OSU Extension and the Mahoning County Ohio Certified Volunteer Naturalist program.

“We are so happy to see a crowd like this,” said Education Manager Mandy Smith. During the lecture, Cepek discussed the facts and fictions of local coyotes. “It is important for people to be curious and enjoy nature,” Cepek said. He explained that he has been working with coyotes for more than 20 years, since his graduate school work. “For my work I field a lot of

calls from the community, many of which are highly concerned when they have a coyote near by,” he said. Cepek said that public perception of coyotes, especially in the media, is often negative. This can cause the community to panic when coyotes move into their area. “What we need to understand is that animals just follow their instincts,” Cepek said. He explained how human

impact has greatly changed the natural environment of these animals. “Their environment changes because of what we do, and then people get afraid of them,” Cepek said. “They are just following their instincts.” The next lecture in the Naturalist Series will cover Katydids and Crickets on Aug. 10. The Austintown library celebrated the release of the new “Toy Story” movie with a Toy Box Takeover event on June 20. Librarian Romie Policy organized the event, hosting it at the Poland and Canfield libraries as well. “I wanted a fun way to cele-

brate the new movie release,” Policy said. “Everyone loves ‘Toy Story.’” During the event, Policy set up stations around the meeting room with themed crafts and games. Children were able to create their own Mr. Potato Head and their own Forky. Hammy’s egg game was avail-

YMCA hosts Camp F.R.I.E.N.D. The Autism Society of Mahoning Valley has been awarded a $10,000 grant from the Kennedy Family Fund of The Community Foundation of the Mahoning Valley to support its fifth annual Camp F.R.I.E.N.D.: Finding Rewards In Every New Day, an inclusive day camp experience for children, teens and young adult students with autism and their friends. The first program of its kind in the Mahoning Valley, Camp F.R.I.E.N.D. is facilitated by ABA Therapy Solutions. Camp will take place July 15-19 and Aug. 12-16 from 8:30 a.m. until 2:30 p.m. each day at the Central YMCA in Youngstown. The grant will help more families share in this fun, summer rite of passage by allowing the camp to expand the number of campers that can attend and enabling the Autism Society of Mahoning Valley to offer financial-based scholarships. Camp costs $150 per student per week and financial scholarships are available. The primary shift available is 4:00pm-12:00am Monday through Friday, with occasional opportunities to fill other open shifts. Requirements: High School diploma required associate’s degree (preferred), or equivalent training and experience in a public safety field. Minimum of two years’ experience i law enforcement/security (in a higher education setting) is preferred. Required to obtain/retain First Aid/CPR/AED certification and a basic knowledge of various computer programs. Act 120 and/or Act 235 certification preferred although not needed at this time. Additional training/certification may be required at a later date. Valid driver’s license is required.
