Gathering Place event to be Aug. 13 There will be a Gathering Place event at Lord of Life Church, located at 550 N. Broad Street in Canfield, on Aug. 13 at 11 a.m. Josh Wells from Canfield Police Department will give a presentation on “Scams.” Lunch will be provided by The Woodlands and blood pressures will be taken promptly at 11 a.m. Join them for an afternoon or fun, food and fellowship. This is a free community outreach social program offered to all senior citizens that takes place on the second Monday of the month every month. Different games and activities are also offered each month. The contact person for these events is Bernadette Beler at 330533-6045 or church at 330-533-3531.

Weekly square dance lessons to begin on Sept. 11 The Niles Friendly Squares, a local square dance group dedicated to keeping alive the art form of square dancing, will begin a new year of weekly square dance lessons. The introductory session will be on Sept. 11 from 7-9 p.m. Each session builds upon the previous session and will include learning steps along with plenty of review and practice each week to help attendees master the moves. The sessions are designed to cover all the steps in the basic square dance program.

Gene Hammond will be the instructor.

The Tuesday evening sessions will run through April 16. There is a nominal fee of $6 per lesson. The Friendly Squares also sponsors monthly dances with alternating dances, or tips, for new dancers to practice their skills as well as tips for more experienced dancers.

All the lessons and monthly dances take place at the Niles SCOPE Center, located at 14 E. State St. in Niles. The Friendly Squares will also be performing square dance demonstrations at the Canfield Fair on Aug. 30 from 7-8 p.m. and Sept. 2 from 2-3 p.m. on the stage located in front of the International Building.

Local skate park to be location of music festival The Skatepark Music Festival will take place on Sept. 21 at 3 p.m. at the Wedgewood Ramps in Youngstown.

The cost is $5 at the door and the event will feature such bands as Alteras, Red Nose Panic, Rees Man Dolo & Droege, Wanderer, 13 Lucky, Evidence of Ruin, Whiskey Pilot, Service Monkeys and Gho$tlee. Food will be by Suzie’s and Mission Taco. The event is hosted and produced by Paul Goon.

Bonding with babies and books This event is for caregivers and their little ones who are 6-23 months.

There will be 20 minutes of language enrichment including rhymes, songs and stories, followed by time to play and socialize every Thursday in August at 10 a.m. at the Canfield library.

DIY house flipping and rehab events announced The Mahoning Valley Real Estate Investors Association will meet on Aug. 13 from 5:30-8:30 p.m. at Boardman Park’s Lariccia Family Community Center, located at 375 Canfield Poland Road, for its monthly meeting. The public is welcome. Non –members are invited to attend two monthly meetings free. Join them on the second Monday of every month for some DIY and money saving steps for rehabbing and/or maintenance on a house. The public is also invited to the 2018 Mahoning Valley and Akron Joint Venture Rehab Tour, sponsored by MVREIA and ACREIA, on Aug. 18 from 9 a.m. until 5 p.m. at the Rodman Library, located at 215 E. Broadway in Alliance.

This is a full day, intensive training on the entire house flipping process. This presentation is geared toward new and experienced flippers. It features multiple speakers and consists of a morning classroom session, lunch and a handson afternoon session and rehab bus tour. Registration is required.

American and Irish teens showcase talent

The Mahoning Valley Ulster Project had its annual Chuck Moffett Talent Show at the Canfield Presbyterian Church on July 20.

Nineteen teens, including 11 Northern Ireland teens and eight American teens, showcased their various talents throughout the show.

Northern Ireland counselor Dona l Stafford welcomed the audience to the event.

“Good evening and welcome to our annual talent show. The kids have had a lot of fun preparing their acts for you. They have practiced and perfected their acts,” Stafford said.

First up were the American teens who performed a line dance to “Cotton Eye Joe,” followed by an airport skit performed by the Irish teens. Next, the American teens performed a gymnastics routine.

The group of Irish teens followed with a dance to the “Cha, Cha Slide,” with the boys breaking out to lip sync to “Umbrella” and the girls breaking out to lip sync to “Thrift Shop.” The boys reappeared to perform a lip sync and dance to “Single Ladies,” with the girls countering with a lip sync routine to “Finesse.” The Irish teens then came together to lip sync “I Want it That Way.” The American teens then took the stage to perform a doctor office skit. Next, the Irish teens performed a skit with half of them sitting behind the other half using their arms to perform tasks such as brushing hair, putting on make up, shaving and applying sun screen. The American teens returned to the stage to perform a duet from “Frozen.” The

American teens performed a bonus act of lip syncing and dancing.

After a brief intermission, during which the teens and attendees enjoyed snacks, the Irish teens acted out a recap of the activities they had participated in since arriving in the United States.

For the grand finale of the show, the teens came together to sing “Friends” by Michael W. Smith.

As a special tribute to the teens, the counselors presented each of them with individual awards, such as Most Easy Going, Most Sassy, Biggest Flirt, Best Hair and Best Behaved.

“This is a great summer experience for all the teens. It is a chance for all of them to become active in their community,” said Rebecca Hartz, co-director Mahoning Val-

ley Ulster Project.

Established in the Mahoning Valley in 1988, the Mahoning Valley Ulster Project is celebrating its 30th year of bringing teens from Belfast, Northern Ireland to spend the month of July with teens from the Mahoning Valley.

The intent of the Ulster Project is to break down the walls of intolerance and mistrust that exist in Northern Ireland.

It was created through the efforts of likeminded peace seekers who strive towards the ultimate goal of creating a community of peace through fostering tolerance, understanding and friendship. The Ulster Project focuses on changing the perception of Ireland’s youth by bringing them together in a strife-free atmosphere that emphasizes acceptance of all people, regardless of creed.

Learn what’s in your lunch at Mill Creek park

Have you ever wondered “How did that get in my lunch box?”

This is exactly the question guiding the group of 5-6 year-olds participating in Mill Creek’s Park Pals camp, called Food Quest, the week of July 9.

“The goal is for them to figure out where their food comes from, to have all their questions answered,” said Brenda Markley, a Mill Creek Parks employee who is running the camp.

During this 5-day camp children will learn about all the different areas of the Mill Creek Farms.

“Basically to introduce the idea that that is what farmers do,” Markley said, “Kids love to eat so just kind of getting the idea that that’s where it starts.”

On Monday, the children took a tour around the farm, where they went to personally meet the animals and even held the newest addition, baby goats.

Children rode on a tractor to the different farms, learning about the different plants and animals that grow and live there.

Tuesday the camp will focused on plants, how they grow, and the specific crops grown at Mill Creek Farms.

The Mill Creek Park hosted an event titled Family Fun Friday on July 6 at the Fellows Riverside Gardens.

It was free to attend and was open to the public.

The theme of the event was bubbles, and there was a range of bubble related activities for children and their families.

Children made hand-made bubble blowers out of Styrofoam cups and plastic straws.

There was also a table where children were able to blow bubbles directly onto the table top using straws.

“This is the coolest thing I’ve ever done,” said Logan Naughton while he blew bubbles onto the table.

Children were also welcome to partake in science experiments.

At one table children were able to test which bubble solution, home made or store bought, was better for bubble making.

There was also a table set up with different tools and brushes where children could experiment to see what they could or could not blow bubbles with.

Free face painting was also available.

Additionally, the Metro Parks provided Salvia plants for children to pot and take home for themselves.

All supplies were provided by Mill Creek Park.

The event occurs every week on Friday’s at Fellows Riverside Garden, each week has new activities and different themes.

Swimmers raise funds for Akron Children’s Hospital

The Canfield Swim Club swim team had its seventh annual Swim-A-Thon on July 19.

The swimmers raised money to be donated locally to the Showers Family Center For Childhood Cancer at Akron Children’s Hospital in Boardman.

Under the direction of Head Coach Brian Stahl and assistant coaches Jamie Stahl and Kyle Kimerer, members of the swim team participated in this event to honor and remember those who have been affected by cancer.

eral swim team members made posters and signs dedicated to family members or friends who passed away or survived cancer.

The Swim-A-Thon swimmers raised more than $2,500 from the event, which promotes team building and teaches the swimmers that they can make a difference.

The swimmers celebrated their accomplishment of swimming laps for donations with Midnight Madness, an evening of fun. Some activities the swimmers participated in were jump or dive, greased watermelon, a team scavenger hunt, kickball wars and a ice cream sundae bar.

The Jim Frank combo played a concert at Mauthe Park on June 28.

The concert was part of the Mill Creek Park concert with assistance from the cit y of Struthers.

Making up the Jim Frank combo are Jim Frank on the accordion, Bill Gonda on the Drums and Joe Commarata on the Trumpet.

The band plays a mix of mu-

sic including both polka and covers of Frank Sinatra.

The members of the band have been together for more than 45 years and are all retired school teachers.

They play at a variety of locations in the area.

“We a lways love to come out and hear music here,” said Bill Stanton, who attended the event. “We have heard them play a few times in the area.”

The series will continue every Thursday at 7 p.m., but will move to different locations.

Maura Picciano and Michael McGiffin, both of Poland, were united in marriage Dec. 16, 2017, during a ceremony that was officiated by the Rev. Edward Noga at St. Patrick Church. A reception took place that evening at Stambaugh Auditorim in Youngstown. The groom is a son of J. Timothy and Lisa McGiffin of Poland.

Maurus and D. Kathleen Picciano are the parents of the bride.

The bride wore an all-over Chantilly lace drop-waist gown with a bateau neckline and scoop back. It featured long bell sleeves with scalloped details. The ensemble was complemented by a cathedral-length blusher veil.

The bride’s mother was matron of honor. Bridemaids were Rylee Jankowsi, niece of the bride; Anna Thomas, niece of the groom; Ava Picciano, niece of the bride; and Charleigh Jankowski, niece of the bride.

The attendants’ dresses were soft gold.
