Children learn lessons about agriculture By ALEXIS BARTOLOMUCCI abartolomucci@vindy.com

Fellows Riverside Gardens hosted its monthly Sprout Club program on July 20. Brenda Markley, Agricultural Education Programs Manager at Mill Creek MetroParks Farm, took over and led the class recently, talking about wheat and “The Little Red Hen.” Children who attended the program listened to the story “The Little Red Hen” to learn about wheat before they started to do their hands-on activities. The book taught the children how wheat is created to make different items, like bread. The children went back to their seats to prepare for their activity. Instead of making bread like the Little Red Hen, the children learned how to make their own play dough using flour, water, Kool-Aid packets for coloring and other household items. One of the children at Camp FRIEND painted a background on his canvas.

CAMP FRIEND

One of the most successful trips was the trip to Kennywood on June 28. The Autism Society was able to get a charter bus and take several families to the park and make a fun day out of it. “I had four families last night call me to thank me,” said Marciano about the Kennywood trip. On June 29, families went to Boardman Park to get an art lesson from Kristen Kantounata-

For the past three years, Camp FRIEND was a day camp in which parents could drop their children off each day and have them participate in the planned activities. In the fourth year, the Autism Society decided to try something new - a family week and families could

pick and choose what activities they wanted to enjoy. “To get kids out and doing activities, it’s so important for the kids because they learn independence,” said Robin Suzelis, Board President of Autism Society of Mahoning Valley. “We really try to organize these events to be sensor y friendly for our families,” said Tracy Marciano, Camp Coordinator.

kis. The children were able to paint a canvas and use their hands to create flowers. The week came to an end as the families took a trip to Wagon Trails Animal Park. The Autism Society looks forward to hosting the Camp FRIEND event each summer and allowing children with special needs and their families to get out and enjoy activities planned specifically for them.

Shops at Boardman Park celebrate 25 years and more. Throughout the last 25 years, the Shops have raised more than $1,000,000 for local non profits and charities. Shops owner, David Handel, will host an event on Aug. 19 at the Shops for the community and employees to celebrate the 25th anniversary. There will be a Care Cruise and Bike Night, two concerts from Party of Two and Dueling Pianos featuring Todd Cutshaw and Andy Paczak, food, 50/50 raffles and a chance to win a $500 shopping spree. The evening will begin at 5 p.m. with the Car and Bike Show and run until about 10 p.m. The proceeds from the raffle, basket auction and beer sales will benefit Handel Foundation, a 501c3 whose mission is to enhance the lives of children and adults with disabilities.
