Children learn language from native speaker By ALEXIS BARTOLOMUCCI abartolomucci@vindy.com
Children sat in their seats, eager to learn another language, at the Poland library thanks to a Youngstown State University student. Hablamos Espanol: Spanish for Bigger Kids is a four-week program where 12 children in first through fourth grade met once a week to learn the Spanish language. The class is taught by Leilani Figueroa-Rivera, originally from Puerto Rico, who is a student at YSU, studying to be a Spanish teacher. The first week consisted of the children learning greetings and how to say the numbers. For the second class the numbers were reviewed and the children then Neighbors | Alexis Bartolomucci learned the different colors. Figuero-Rivera created different games to help the children learn and memorize words. “The more repetition that you do, the more they feel comfortable with it,” said Figueroa-Rivera. Children took part in a scavenger hunt on July 3. Clues were hidden around the library and
the children had to use one clue to find the next and get to the prize at the end. All of the clues were related to Spanish vocabulary and information the children have learned during the previous classes. Every week the children come back in anticipation of what they’re going to learn about next. They started learning with a memory card matching game, participated in a scavenger hunt and for the last week Figueroa-
Rivera plans to play Bingo. When the children return each week they are ready to learn more and expand their vocabulary. Teaching them a new language at a young age will help them get a head start when they begin to learn another language in school. “They acquire the language better and they sound more native-like the earlier they start,” said Figueroa-Rivera.

Christy Kopsac played the fiddle during one of the performances by the Wrangler Band on June 29 at Boardman Park.
Guests enjoy local entertainment at Boardman Park By ALEXIS BARTOLOMUCCI abartolomucci@vindy.com
Guests set up their seats as The Wrangler Band set up their equipment before the concert at the Maag Outdoor Theater at Boardman Park began on June 29. The concert was part of the Music in the Park program hosted by Boardman Park in the summer. This is the 40th anniversary of the Music in the Part Concert Series. All of the performances are free and open to the public thanks to sponsorships of local businesses and organizations. The Wrangler Band consists of two brothers, a sister and a friend - who they consider a brother - and are from the western Pennsylvania area. They perform a variety of country and classic rock music. Guests clapped along to the songs and joined in on some of the singing. The band per-
formed the song “Body Like a Back Road,” by Sam Hunt for the first time and received an applause at the end of the performance. The band members spoke between each song talking about themselves, other places they perform and other facts about themselves. The park was filled w ith people of all ages who came to enjoy local music. There were couples, families, friends and some people came to spend some time by themselves. The concerts provide an opportunity from people all around the community to come out and listen to local entertainment while spending time together in the nice weather. A concert will take place every Thursday and all but two performances will start at 7 p.m. at the Maag Outdoor Theater. More information and a list of the local entertainment can be found at www.boardmanpark. com or by calling 330-726-8105.
