Trunk sales raise money for worthy causes By ALEXIS BARTOLOMUCCI abartolomucci@vindy.com

St. Christine Parish hosted their second annual Trunk and Treasure sale on Aug. 5 in the St. Christine parking lot. Severa l cars set up t heir trunks and tables full of items they are hoping goes to a good home. Some of the items are previously used, while others are new. Some vendors sold crafts they handmade themselves. “It started out as a fundraiser for Celebrate and a service project for our kids because we’ve been donating half our proceeds to a worthy cause,” said Kathy Nemergut, coordinator and Celebrate advisor. This year half of the proceeds went to a past Celebrate member who has sarcoma. The sale gives the children who are involved in the church an opportunity the get the feeling of giving to other people. Celebrate is a program that St. Christine Parish runs as part of the youth ministry program.

A group of adult advisors meet with a group of high school seniors every week from September to March. Toward the end of the program, there is a threeday retreat for high school juniors. The juniors are then invited to be part of the Celebrate program for their senior year. St. Christine has done this for 18 years and have had more than 450 students come through from over 25 high schools. “We grow in faith and get to know each other,” said Nemergut. The church raises money by charging $10 for a parking spot, selling food and raffle tickets. There were several people who registered last year and this year to sell their items. Seniors from the previous Celebrate program come, as well as the juniors who are preparing for the upcoming year. The sale gave them an chance to get to know each other. “It’s fun for us to get together too because we don’t usually Neighbors | Alexis Bartolomucci meet this time of year,” said Cars lined up in the St. Christine parking lot for the Trunk and Treasure sale Nemergut. on Aug. 5 to sell different items.

The Commons at Greenbriar provided a cooling station in the cafe for the public to come enjoy and lounge around to get out of the heat.

Health care center provides cool stations for community By ALEXIS BARTOLOMUCCI abartolomucci@vindy.com

The Commons at Greenbriar has opened their building to the public who are looking to stay cool and out of the heat. Every Monday through Friday, from 8 a.m. until 5 p.m., the building will be open and some of the rooms will be turned into cooling stations. It will be free for any guest who decides to utilize the space.

The cafe and library will provide public spaces for people to relax. There is a television, books, games and other activities for people to enjoy while cooling down. Refreshments will also be provided. Meghan Miller, activities director, and Melissa Chambers, assisted living director, spoke with sheriffs about the need in the community for spaces like this. There are several members in the community, especially

seniors, who don’t have air conditioning at their homes. “We just want to be as welcoming as we can and help out the community,” said Chambers. The Commons at Greenbriar is one of the only places in the area that provides cooling stations for the public. The cooling station will be open all summer long for those who wish to use it. “We can let them stay here and hang out with us for the

day. Come to the activities or watch a movie,” said Miller. The staff at Greenbriar is hoping that with the hot, summer weather approaching the cooling stations will be used and beneficial to the community. The Commons at Greenbriar is located at 8060 South Avenue in Boardman. More information can be found by calling Meghan Miller at 330-726-3700.

Children from Drama Camp at the Poland library wore their costumes and had a dress rehearsal on July 13 for the upcoming play.

Children experience theater life at the library By ALEXIS BARTOLOMUCCI abartolomucci@vindy.com

Children spent a week of their summer learning the ins and outs of the theater world during the third annual Drama Camp at the Poland library on July 1014. Jen Kuzcek, a youth services librarian with the Public Library of Youngstown and Mahoning Valley, instructed the Drama Camp. There were around 25 children, from fourth- to ninthgrade, who signed up to take part in the program. While many of the children who participated in Drama Camp were new, there were several children who have come back for the second time. “It’s really fun because you get to learn how to act. This is my second year doing it because I really liked the first year doing ‘Rap-Punzel,’” said Kaleb Dettmer, who is the stage manager for the second year in a row. Kaleb and his brother, Connor (who plays Pinnochio), enjoyed their time at the camp. Kaleb likes being the stage manager because he likes to help people

when they forget their lines. The week-long program allowed the children to learn about theater and performing. The costumes were provided, but the children made their own props and backdrops. The props were made from things like construction paper, cardboard and tape. “My favorite part was all the reading because I like school and reading,” said Maleah Jacobs who participated in camp for the first time. Jacobs plans on keeping her folder full of everything the children learned throughout the week. She hopes to spend more time acting and thinks about trying out for a play when she gets to high school. The play the children learned was “The Three Little Pigs in Fantasyland,” which was a twist on “The Three Little Pigs” fairy tale. The final day of camp on July 14, the children performed the play for friends and family who wished to attend. There were snacks, books and other items related to the performance set out for the guests to enjoy.
