Boardman Park car show benefits valley children By ABBY SLANKER neighbors@vindy.com
The Mahoning Valley Olde Car Club hosted its 39th annual Cars in the Park Car Show and Flea Market in Boardman Park on Aug. 6. More than 300 cars were available for the large crowd to view and get an up close look. “We have around 300 cars from all over the state and from out-of-state from such states as Pennsylvania, Michigan and West Virginia,” said Dave Bayowski, a director of Mahoning Valley Olde Car Club and member in charge of registration. Money raised from the car show is used to help several families throughout the year with children with medical conditions and hospice. “We help several families throughout the year. A portion of the money raised, plus donations, benefits a young person with financial help from medical costs. This year’s beneficiary is Brooklyn Hostetter, a 6-year-old from New Waterford diagnosed with Hypoplastic Left Heart Syndrome two days after her birth. Brooklyn faces several heart surgeries, lifetime medications and many other treatments. We are grateful we can help her family with her medical costs with money we raise today,” Bayowski said. Bayowski said the organization has donated thousands of dollars throughout the last 39 years. “We expect to ra ise over $3,000 from today’s show. We have donated $70,000 to other causes over the years and about $50,000 to hospice, which we just recently included in our donations, Bayowski said. The car show is a judged event, with about 20-25 members of the club serving as judges. First and second places are awarded in 23 classes, along with a Participant’s Choice Award, a President’s Choice Award and two different Best of Show trophies.
The show has several major sponsors, including Snyder’s Antique Auto Parts, Becker Funeral Homes, Udderly Smooth, Flynn Auto Group, Anthony J. Billett Landscape, Valley Insurance Group and WKBN and Fox Youngstown. The event also offered door prizes, food, a 50/50 drawing, a Chinese auction and children’s activities. “We’d like to thank everyone for bringing their cars our and supporting the Mahoning Valley Olde Car Club,” Bayowski said. The Wrangler Band consists of two brothers, a sister and a friend - who they consider a brother - and are from the western Pennsylvania area. They perform a variety of country and classic rock music. Guests clapped along to the songs and joined in on some of the singing. The band performed the song “Body Like a
Back Road,” by Sam Hunt for the first time and received an applause at the end of the performance. The band members spoke between each song talking about themselves, other places they perform and other facts about themselves. The park was f illed w ith people of all ages who came to enjoy local music. There were couples, families, friends and some people came to spend some time by themselves. The concerts provide an opportu-

POLICE
Continued from Page 7 Aug. 1 Arrest: A traffic stop on Route 224 resulted in the arrest of Eugene A. Bogden, 60, who was charged with operating a vehicle impaired. Bogden, of Bedell Road, Berlin Center, had a 0.238 blood-alcohol content, which is nearly three times Ohio’s 0.08 legal intoxication limit, police said. Auto theft: A 1999 Volkswagen Jetta was stolen in the 300 block of West Midlothian Boulevard. Theft by deception: A sales manager with Goodyear Auto Service Center, 418 Boardman-Canfield Road, told officers a customer has failed to pay $148 of a $948 outstanding bill for services rendered. Identity theft: Police received information that someone without authorization had listed a piece of property in Diamond in a Forest Park Drive woman’s name for $104,551 that the woman had never bought. Theft: A Social Security card was removed from a vehicle in the 800 block of Moyer Avenue. Drug paraphernalia: A mechanic with a Market Street car dealership reported having been accidentally stuck by a hypodermic needle as he removed a rear seat. In addition, he reportedly found a suspected crack-cocaine pipe in the vehicle. Theft: Jamar D.M. Sklenchar,19, of Roxbury Street; Tequie Clinkscale, 25, of Hudson Avenue; and Kevin L. Crockett, 29, of Hilton Avenue, were charged with theft. The three Youngstown residents were accused of taking $399 worth of merchandise from Walmart. Harassment: Beaver Township police handed to Boardman authorities Michael E. Baun, 32, who was wanted on a telecommunications-harassment charge, related to a July 5 situation in which the owner of a township towing company alleged Baun, of Woodworth Road, North Lima,
had called the business 52 times in a 20-minute period. Apparently, Baun became angered when a tow-truck driver had parked in a “no parking” area at an East Western Reserve Road fast-food restaurant, a report stated. Theft: Pamela K. Hiner, 52, of Thornberry Trail, North Lima, was charged in the theft of $96 worth of groceries from Marc’s. Arrest: After pulling her over near Brookwood Road, officers charged Diane S. Keeler, 62, of Indianola Road, Boardman, with operating a vehicle impaired. Keeler registered a 0.190 bloodalcohol content, a report said. Theft: A man and a woman reportedly stole an $80 DVD player, five wireless speakers and several other items from Walmart. Drugs: Authorities responded to possible drug activity on Doral Drive, where they charged Samuel V. Esposito, 28, of Riley Avenue, Struthers, with drug abuse and possession of drug paraphernalia. Found were a piece of suspected marijuana, a suspected marijuana pipe and a packet of pills identified as Tramadol, an over-the-counter drug typically used to treat moderate to severe pain, for which he had no prescription, police alleged. Harassment: A township woman said she received 10 such text messages while at a Mayflower Drive home. Theft: A West Midlothian Boulevard woman found out someone had entered her vehicle and took $2 in change. Theft: A South Avenue man reported having paid $300 for a bicycle he bought on Craigslist but never received. Criminal mischief: Someone in the 7600 block of Huntington Drive struck a car with eggs. Theft: Two Glenwood Avenue men reported money and a pair of boots had been taken from their vehicles. Theft: A $250 silver bracelet was removed from a car in the 300 block of Shields Road.

The Drama Camp children practiced their play “The Three Little Pigs in Fantasyland” at the Poland library before their final performance.
Children experience theater life at the library By ALEXIS BARTOLOMUCCI abartolomucci@vindy.com
Children spent a week of their summer learning the ins and outs of the theater world during the third annual Drama Camp at the Poland library on July 1014. Jen Kuzcek, a youth services librarian with the Public Library of Youngstown and
Mahoning Valley, instructed the Drama Camp. There were around 25 children, from fourthto ninth-grade, who signed up to take part in the program. While many of the children who participated in Drama Camp were new, there were several children who have come back for the second time. “It’s really fun because you get to learn how to act. This is
my second year doing it because I really liked the first year doing ‘Rap-Punzel,’” said Kaleb Dettmer, who is the stage manager for the second year in a row. Kaleb and his brother, Connor (who plays Pinnochio), enjoyed their time at the camp. Kaleb likes being the stage manager because he likes to help people when they forget their lines. The children practiced their lines in their costumes for the upcoming “The Three Little Pigs in Fantasyland” play they learned at Drama Camp.
THEATER Continued from Page 8
The week-long program allowed the children to learn about theater and performing. The costumes were provided, but the children made their own props and backdrops. The props were made from things like construction paper, cardboard and tape. “My favorite part was all the reading because I like school and reading,” said Maleah Jacobs who participated in camp for the first time.
Jacobs plans on keeping her folder full of everything the children learned throughout the week. She hopes to spend more time acting and thinks about trying out for a play when she gets to high school. The play the children learned was “The Three Little Pigs in Fantasyland,” which was a twist on “The Three Little Pigs” fairy tale. The final day of camp on July 14, the children performed the play for friends and family who wished to attend. There were snacks, books and other items related to the performance set out for the guests to enjoy.
