Exotic animals are the stars of Operation Blessing fundraiser By ABBY SLANKER neighbors@vindy.com

The side parking lot of the Canfield Dollar General got a little wild on Aug. 5, as the store hosted a Traveling Petting Zoo fundraiser, with all proceeds benefiting Canfield Operation Blessing. Dwayne and Daniel Felger of Felger Exotics brought several of their animals for children and adults alike to pet and hold. The Felgers donated their services and brought with them a Kune Kune pig from New Zealand, a miniature Hereford cow, two Nigerian dwarf goats, a Brazilian short tail possum, a gecco, a moon crab, a Lionhead bunny, marmasets and several more exotic animals. “When Sherri Lupole, manager of the Canfield Dollar General, asked me if I could bring my animals as a fundraiser for Canfield Operation Blessing, of course I said yes. I am happy to help them out. It is definitely worth the while. These are animals kids don’t get to see every day, and to provide them the opportunity to see them up close and pet them and to also help Operation Blessing is just great,” Dwayne Felger said. According to Canfield Operation Blessing Director Julie Kercher, the money raised by the Traveling Petting Zoo will be used to purchase food to be distributed by Operation Blessing. “All the money raised here today will be used to purchase food to stock our food pantry. I would like to thank Dwayne and Daniel for donating their time and animals. And I would also like to thank Dollar General and especially Sherri for the idea of hosting this event for us and making it happen. We appreciate all they have done for us. Thank you to all our volunteers who came out to help today, too,” Kercher said.

The Canfield Community Concert Band welcomed piccolo players to try and break the record of most piccolos present playing “Stars and Stripes.”

Piccolo palooza to break world record By ALEXIS BARTOLOMUCCI abartolomucci@vindy.com

Hundreds of guests brought blankets and lawn chairs to Austintown Park on June 27 to watch the Canfield Community Concert Band perform and try to break a world record. The Canfield Community Concert Band performed for the guests at Austintown Park as a way to prepare for the Austintow n Fireworks Celebration on July 2. The concert band performed a variety of songs for the guests in attendance. The Canfield Com-

munity Concert Band worked to spread the word that they wa nted to tr y a nd brea k a world record after seeing a similar event last year by the Da llas Winds. Leann Rich, band president, wanted to try and do the same thing in the Mahoning County. “I purchased a beginning piccolo and had three weeks to practice for Piccolo Palooza. To say it was challenging is an understatement,” said Penny Pavelko, a piccolo player. Pavelko really enjoyed her time playing with so many others. She said playing “Stars

and Stripes Forever” is every piccolo players dream and people were happy to participate. Paveloko hopes this will become an annual event in hopes on more players will hear about it and participate. At t he end of t he performance, piccolo players from all around the area came together

to try and break a record of the largest group of piccolo players assembled to perform “Stars and Stripes Forever” with the Canfield Community Concert Band. There were around 100 piccolo players of all ages who joined the group to try and break the record. The Austintown trustees will send in a

video of the performance to Guinness World Records. “I was very happy with the turnout – we did it all through free publicity and had players from as far as Canton and Slippery Rock, Pa. There were more pic c olos t ha n ba nd members, that was a win in my book,” said Rich.

Camp FRIEND provides fun for special needs families By ALEXIS BARTOLOMUCCI abartolomucci@vindy.com

The Autism Society of Mahoning Valley hosted a new summer program for families on the autism spectrum and other special needs. Camp FRIEND is a week long event that occurred on June 26-30 and took place around different parts of the Mahoning Valley. There was an activity planned each day for the families and children to enjoy together.

For the past three years, Camp FRIEND was a day camp in which parents could drop their children off each day and have them participate in the planned activities. In the fourth year, the Autism Society decided to try something new - a family week and families could pick and choose what activities they wanted to enjoy. “To get kids out and doing activities, it’s so important for the kids because they learn independence,” said Robin Suzelis, Board President of Autism Soci-

ety of Mahoning Valley. “We really try to organize these events to be sensor y friendly for our families,” said Tracy Marciano, Camp Coordinator. One of the most successful trips was the trip to Kennywood on June 28. The Autism Society was able to get a charter bus and take several families to the park and make a fun day out of it. “I had four families last night call me to thank me,” said Marciano about the Kennywood trip.

On June 29, families went to Boardman Park to get an art lesson from Kristen Kantounatakis. The children were able to paint a canvas and use their hands to create flowers. The week came to an end as the families took a trip to Wagon Trails Animal Park. The Autism Society looks forward to hosting the Camp FRIEND event each summer and allowing children with special needs and their families to get out and enjoy activities planned specifically for them.

The Canfield High School Soccer Boosters hosted its ninth annual Cardinal Classic Canfield High School Soccer Tournament on July 8-9 with 43 schools participating in the two-day event. Five fields were in use, all located on the high school grounds and including the stadium, with several school bringing two or more teams to play 40-minute games. The tournament took place throughout two days, with the girls teams playing Saturday and the boys teams playing Sunday. Teams from Ohio and Pennsylvania participated in the boys’ and girls’ divisions and included Poland, Barberton, Grand Valley, Niles, Crestview, East Liverpool, Campbell, Carrollton, Austintown Fitch, West Branch, Harding, Champion, Kirtland, Boardman and Gi-

rard, along w ith numerous teams from the Akron, Cleveland and Columbus areas. The Cardinal Classic is a key fundraiser for the Canfield High School boys and girls soccer program, and was organized by the parent members of the Canfield Soccer Boosters, with Rob Accordino serving as president. According to Accordino, proceeds from the annual tournament are used to buy new uniforms, team camp and tournament fees. The goal of the tournament was to g ive t he coaches a chance to view the players preseason and to prepare for the fall season. Coaches used this opportunity to see the players with the ball and to learn what the team needs to work on for the upcoming fall season. It also gave the coaches a chance to watch the players and get a sense of which players to select for the junior varsity and var-

sity teams. The tournament also had community support and corporate sponsors, which included Simon Roofing, Fitness Together, DiRusso Sausage, Cocca’s Pizza, Advanced Dermatology and Skin Cancer Center, Titan LED, Melissa Mullane Padgett, D.D.S., Windsor House at Canfield, Arby’s of Canfield, NC Soccer, Trolios, Chase Agency, Fishbone Offroad, The Bonanno Group, Mastrangelos Landsaping, Mercy Health, Avion of the Water, Tequila Jalisco, Dr. Pamela Barkett, Rise Pies, McDonalds Canfield, Kambrook Seal Coat LLC, The Columbus Crew, Davis International LLC, Fusillo Flooring, PNC Bank, Drakes Landing, The Petracci Family, Kona Ice, Olfield Graphics, Needles Nest, Deangelo Orthodontics, Safeguard by Prime, Youngstown Wholesale Grocery, Schroedel, Scullin and Bestic CPA’s, York Mahoning Mechanical Contractors and

Canfield Soccer Boosters parents volunteered at the tournament in every aspect from the concession stand to selling Tshirts to registration and helping set up the tournament the day. Members of the Canfield High School National Honor Society were also able to earn service hours by volunteering at the tournament. C a n f ie ld S o c c er B o o s ters President Rob Accordino thanked everyone involved in helping make the tournament a success. “A ton of work has gone into this weekend in preparation for the 75-plus teams that came to play at our high school campus.
