DQ employees win a ride on ‘Air Bear’ Neighbors | Submitted
Ray and Chrissy Smith, owners of the Cornersburg, Austintown, Columbiana and Boardman Dairy Queen locations, recently had a contest with their employees. They purchased a ride on the Akron Children’s Hospital life flight helicopter, called the “Air Bear” at a charity auction. The employees at their locations that sold the most “Miracle Balloons” would win the ride. Winners had to be 18-years or older to ride. On July 29, Nicole Douglas of Canfield and Cassie Savo of Youngstown, took their first ride in a helicopter. Both girls work at the Cornersburg DQ location. Other balloons sellers recognized were Cassidy Kimbrough, the top seller at the Cornersburg DQ location; Amy Ziccardi from Austintown DQ location; Alissa Baxter from the Austintown DQ location; Shelby Hilbert from the Columbiana DQ location and Destinee McGee from the Boardman DQ location. “Miracle Treat Day” took place on July 27. One dollar or more from every Blizzard Treat sold that day was donated to the local Akron Children’s Hospital in Boardman. Last year, the four DQ locations owned by the Smiths donated more than $10,000 to Akron Children’s Hospital, Boardman campus. They are proud to be the top contributing DQ stores to the hospital in the area. These stores are in pace to donated well more than $10,000 to the hospital for 2017.

Purple Cat hosts first-ever talent show By ALEXIS BARTOLOMUCCI abartolomucci@vindy.com
P u r ple Cat P roduc t ion s hosted their first-ever talent show on July 14 and 15 at the Youngstown Playhouse. The talent show provided an opportunity for the clients involved with Purple Cat to showcase their talents to the community. Prior to the talent
show Purple Cat Productions, which is based at the Morley Theater building, would host a play that they put their own twist on. In past years Purple Cat has put on “Beauty and the Beast,” “Alice in Wonderland,” “The Wizard of Oz” and more. “They’re just up there doing their thing, it’s a chance for them to showcase what they love to do,” said Purple Cat and
Golden String event coordinator Amy Rigby. The clients participating in the talent show have been practicing for weeks at the Purple Cat locations and the Youngstown Playhouse. There are more than 20 acts from singing to dancing to live art. There will be entertainment before and after the show in the lobby provided by the clients. As soon as the doors open, guests will be entertained by music provided by the clients. “It blows me away to see how far they’ve come,” said Rigby. Jude Mikulich a nd Jason Murphy work at the Purple Cat and are also helping out as two
directors of the talent show. Mikuluch, a theater major, is working with the clients with the stage production and Murphy is working with the music. This allows the clients to be the main stage hands and put on the production themselves. There are several volunteers who are helping work the door, take tickets and much more. Jimmy Sutman, the owner and operator of ISLE, is serving as the emcee for the event. ISLE is Iron and String Life Enhancement which is the main corporation of what Purple Cat is. ISLE’s mission is to sustain the well being of the clients by promoting fulfillment in a
pleasing and caring environment. This is something that Purple Cat Production hopes to continue for years to come. The clients are able to come up with something to do on their own and show everyone their talents and abilities. “My whole heart and soul goes into this program,” said Rigby. “It was easy to do because I know that the clients themselves were the stars, I just had to put it together.” More i n for mat ion about Purple Cat and the events can be found on the Purple Cat Productions Facebook page or BigPurpleCat.com.

Snake celebrates 20th birthday with special guests By ALEXIS BARTOLOMUCCI abartolomucci@vindy.com
The rat snake at Ford Nature Center celebrated her 20 birthday on July 15. Guests came to v isit t he snake, make a craft and enjoy refreshments for her birthday. This is the first time the snake’s birthday was celebrated with the public. Ray Novotny, former naturalist with Mill Creek MetroParks, pitched the idea to Ford Nature Center naturalist, Marilyn Williams, to host a birthday party and allow the public to come and see something they wouldn’t normally see. While the snake stays at Ford Nature Center, she is used to
education children and other guests who come to the different programs. “I had it’s mom and dad, they lived here, and in ‘97 the mom laid a dozen eggs,” said Novotny. Novotny took care of the mom and dad snake at Ford Nature Center. When the mother laid her eggs, about half of them hatched and Novotny decided to keep one and let the rest go. Rat snakes can live to be in their late 20’s to early 30’s. The guests who attended the birthday party had the opportunity the hold the snake and take pictures with her. The party lasted two hours and was open for guests to come and go as they pleased.
