Diabetes Partnership of the Mahoning Valley meeting There will be a meeting of the Diabetes Partnership of the Mahoning Valley at 6:30 p.m. on Aug. 17 at Stonebridge Grille and Tavern. They will be getting ready for and discussing upcoming events, including the Canfield Fair, which will take place Sept. 2-7. The purpose of the Newcomers Club of Canfield is to provide an opportunity for members of the community in and around Canfield to develop friendships, welcome newcomers and to help support the civic, social and charitable life of the community. The meetings are take place on the second Tuesday of each month at 6:30 p.m. unless otherwise announced. The Newcomers Club of Canfield is open to all women of the Mahoning Valley.

TQGIBT to meet Aug. 18 Canfield’s Fair Park will be the meeting place for That Quilt Group I Belong To (TQGIBT) on Aug. 18.

Clare Neff of Village Quilts will present a demonstration on the variety of quilted items – from bed quilts to throws to table runners – that can be made using the XBlocks template. Doors open at 1 p.m., with the opportunity to work on a project of your choice until 5 p.m. Members gather again at Fair Park at 6:30 p.m., with the meeting beginning at 7 p.m.. Anyone interested is welcome to join. TQGIBT is open to all quilters in the Mahoning Valley, at all skill levels.

Schonberger to be next guest Rabbi Joseph P. Schonberger of Liberty will be the guest speaker for the Mahoning World War II Heritage Society meeting on Aug. 24. Schonberger is currently the spiritual leader of Temple El Emeth, a Conservative Jewish congregation in Liberty. He was ordained in 1981 from the Jewish Theological Seminary, having also received a Master’s Degree and Bachelors’ Degree from Columbia University. He served in a congregation in Bangor, Maine for 15 years and has resided in Youngstown, serving Temple El Emeth, for 18 years.

He is a child of Hungarian Holocaust survivors who went to Palestine in 1947 and worked hard for the State of Israel. He was a volunteer ambulance attendant, served as a youngster in the Canadian Merchant Marine, played music and served five years in the United States Army Reserves as a Chaplain.

Fellows Riverside Gardens hosted a special Family Fun Friday on July 24. This buzz-worthy day celebrated the working insect group we’ve grown to appreciate in the spring and summer — bees.

Mill Creek MetroParks Farm hosted a special camp from July 27-31 for students wanting to channel their inner Katniss Everdeens and learn about archery.

Brenda Markley, Mill Creek MetroParks Farm employee, said students started to take interest in archery soon after “The Hunger Games” became popular.

Robin Adams, volunteer instructor, came to teach students the basics of archery with safety

being her top priority.

Adams said she enjoyed being around the children helping them learn something they didn’t know about before — the education was everything.

“We are asking them to feel outside of their comfort level,” Robin Adams said.

As well as reaching outside their comfort levels, Robin Adams said it was nice to see the sense of pride students get after accomplishing something like this.

“I like seeing them feel empowered and fulfilled because they are hitting the target,”

Robin Adams said. “They may not be as good as their neighbor but they are hitting their target and it’s kind of a competition not necessarily with others but with themselves.”

Robin Adams instilled that the goal is for each of them to get better each night. The ultimate goal isn’t even to be able to successfully hit the bullseye every time, Adams said, but it is to learn discipline in using the techniques they are being taught and to use friendship and camaraderie along the way.

“Some have already made strides just in the last 24 hours,” Robin Adams said. “So just in two hours the return is great.”

Her husband and fellow instructor, Steve Adams, agreed that seeing the progress is incredibly rewarding.

“It’s great to see the kids go from zero experience to actually being able to hit the target and how they improve in just an hour or two,” Steve Adams said.

Both Robin and Steve Adams

are certified instructors, maintaining proper training to pass onto their students every year.

All of the work the Adamses do is volunteer to help keep the costs down for students interested in learning about the art of archery.

They get help in regards to funds from the National Rifle Association, the NRA, and the Ohio Department of Natural Resources, the ODNR. “Without the funding and materials provided by the ODNR and the NRA classes like this wouldn’t even be possible,” Steve Adams said.

Happily Ever After Cherri Monty v Michael Miladore Cherri Lyn Monty and Dr. Michael P. Miladore exchanged wedding vows during an afternoon ceremony May 30 at St. Columba Cathedral. The Rev. George V. Murry, bishop of the Diocese of Youngstown, officiated. A reception followed at Tippecanoe Country Club in Canfield.

The couple are residing in Williamsville, N.Y. The bride is the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Rick Monty of Saranac Lake, N.Y., and the groom is the son of Drs. Michael and Dianne Miladore of Canfield.

The bride graduated from the State University of New York at Fredonia, where she earned a bachelor’s degree in business management.

She is employed in marketing and sales at Mancuso Marketing & Sales in Williamsville.

The groom graduated summa cum laude from Youngstown State University with a bachelor’s degree in combined sciences. He earned a doctor of medicine degree from Northeast Ohio Medical University and is chief resident at the University of Buffalo’s Department of Orthopaedic Surgery. His post-residency plans will take him to the University of Buffalo in August for a Hand and Upper Extremity Fellowship.

The bride wore an ivory-colored strapless tulle gown with a sweetheart neckline. The asymmetrical bodice was complemented with a mermaid-style skirt featuring layers of tulle ending in an extended sweep train.

The back was fashioned with a corset-laced design.

Danielle Fraser, sister of the bride, served as her matron of honor. Bridesmaids were Mikka Nodzo, Brittany Monty, her cousin, Jennifer Parisi, Dr. Julia Ng and Caitlin Bottcher. Attendants wore blush-colored dresses.

Gemma White, cousin of the groom, participated as the flower girl.

The groom’s brothers, Dr. Nicholas Miladore and Dr. Joseph Miladore, shared the duties of best man.

Groomsmen were Benjamin Monty, brother of the bride; John Fraser, brother-in-law of the bride; Dr. Benjamin Wong; and Dr. Kevin Kuppler.

A cousin of the groom, Jade Ungur, served as the ring bearer.

Paige Donatelli-Shaw of Lowellville and Patrick Collins are engaged, their parents are announcing.

She is the daughter of John and Leslie LaVolpa of Boardman and Ronald Shaw of Youngstown, and he is the son of Tom and Debbie Collins of Lowellville.

The couple’s wedding will take place in a 1 p.m. ceremony Sept. 12 at Our Lady of the Holy Rosary Church in Lowellville.

Invitations are being extended.

The bride-elect is employed as a registered dental hygienist. She graduated from Youngstown State University and is pursuing a bachelor’s degree in allied health.

The prospective groom is employed by Decal Inc. while completing an apprenticeship in sheet metal. He graduated from New Castle School of Trades with a degree in welding.

Butlers’ 50th honored at June dinner Robert and Carol Butler of Austintown were honored for their 50th wedding anniversary with a dinner June 10 at Stony Brook Cabins in Gatlinburg, Tenn. It was hosted by their children.

Their children are Lori (David) Paull of Austintown, Donald (Jodi) Butler of Deltona, Fla. and Julie (Mike) Villano of Canfield. The couple have eight grandchildren and five great-grandchildren.

The former Carol Sells and Mr. Butler were married May 29, 1965, in St. Paul Church, Canton.

Mrs. Butler is a homemaker and baby sitter.

She also is a member of several ladies card clubs.

Mr. Butler retired in 2000 as an appliance manager for Kmart in Youngstown. The bride wore a white strapless jeweled gown designed with a sweetheart neckline and corset back. A tulle skirt flowed from the dropped waist, and she completed her ensemble with a fingertip veil.

Her sister, Kelly Dwulit, was maid of honor, and matron of honor was her cousin, Mary Pallante-Verville. They wore navy blue gowns, as did the bridesmaids, Michelle DeMichael, the bride’s cousin; Nicole Wilps; and Kayla Browning, the groom’s sister.

Flower girls were the groom’s cousins Emma Whitcomb and Alyssa Browning.

Chad Browning served as best man for his brother, and groomsmen were Chuck Oliver; Michael Dwulit, the bride’s brother; Ben Chell; and Scott Dwulit, another brother of the bride.

Ring bearer was the bride’s cousin Jared DeMichael.

Mrs. Browning graduated as a licensed practical nurse from Choffin Career and Technical Center and is employed as an LPN at The Inn at Ironwood in Canfield.

Her husband holds a bachelor’s degree in communications from Youngstown State University and is a sales broker with FedEx Truckload and Brokerage in Uniontown, Ohio.

Heidi Daniel named 2015 Ohio Librarian of the Year Heidi M. Daniel, Executive Director of the Public Library of Youngstown and Mahoning County, was named Ohio Librarian of the Year for 2015 by the Ohio Library Council, the statewide professional association representing the interests of Ohio’s public libraries, trustees, friends and staff members.

On learning of the award, Daniel was quick to recognize others for this honor.

“I’m surprised, honored and grateful. To me the award is really a reflection of the incredible work of my team and our great community. No one does notable work alone and I recognize all the amazing people around me, both at the library and in our community, who made this type of award possible,” Daniel said.

The award will be presented to Daniel at the OLC’s Conven-

tion on Oct. 7 in Cincinnati.

“I am honored to be recognized by the Ohio Library Council, which is a key organization to libraries throughout the state.

The OLC has an important role in the profession state-wide.

Ohio is known for its excellent library service and its highly qualified library personnel. It is humbling to have been chosen by this valued organization and from a field of highly distinguished nominees,” Daniel said.

Janet Loew — communications, public relations and marketing director — said the library’s executive director is deserving of the award for her “demeanor, professionalism, knowledge of libraries, and, perhaps most importantly, her sincere desire to break down any barriers to library service with a goal of enabling and encourag-

ing everyone to use the library.”

Among the innovations under Daniel’s leadership are the popup library, which reaches people where they are gathering outside of a library, such as schools and community events; a series of new library cards which are tailored to the needs of different groups of people; the READ and TEEN cards which are finefree to ensure that children and teens are not blocked from using a library; a digital card which is fine-free and fee-free because there are no physical materials checked out — the card is for use on library computers, the website, databases and more; new technology offerings and more.

Daniel has kept the library debt-free, even during two construction projects, the Tri-Lakes library and the Canfield library.

She is a careful financial manager and was able to offer a reduction in the library’s levy so that the last ballot issue lowered people’s library property taxes.

Daniel came to PLYMC as executive director in July 2012.

She came to Youngstown from Houston Public Library in Texas, where she began in 2005. At Houston Public Library, she began as assistant branch manager and Juvenile Librarian and quickly advanced through several positions to her job managing 16 Houston libraries as

Additionally, since coming to PLYMC, Daniel has twice been a presenter for Library Journal’s “Lead the Change” physical workshops in Ohio and Pennsylvania, and just completed being a Coach Facilitator for the online “Lead the Change” course offered for librarians who are looking to develop their leadership skills further.

Daniel is also a member of the following: Ohio Presbyterian Retirement System – Initiative to expand educational horizons; Rotary Club of Youngstown; Mahoning Valley College Access Board; WYSU Public Radio Advisory Board member.
