Beloved book characters make special appearance By amanda tonoli atonoli@vindy.com

On July 27, the Boardman library had special guests Elephant and Piggie visit parents and children. Children packed the room, excited for the arrival of the friends they knew and loved so much through reading about them. Librarian Cindy Beach read an interactive story and sang songs with the crowd as they patiently waited for their characters to make their presence known. Elephant and Piggie came out shortly after the start of the event, reading a story about the importance of being a patient waiter and concluding with pictures and hugs for anyone that wished to be apart of the festivities. Jacki Gamble brought her young daughter Gwen to see the characters they read about every day. “She thinks they are hilarious,” Gamble said.

Gamble said that although they can’t come to library functions as much now that her daughter is in preschool, she still thinks highly of them when they are able to come. “I think they are really nicely put together,” Gamble said. “I would’ve never thought they would have something like this See CHARACTERS, Page 11

Attendees of the Mill Creek MetroParks Farm’s Reptile Exhibit were able to make snake crafts during the event July 26.

Reptiles reign at Mill Creek MetroParks Farm By ABBY SLANKER neighbors@vindy.com

The Mill Creek MetroParks Farm’s Reptile Exhibit featured some scaly, slithery creatures, such as snakes, lizards, bearded dragons and geckos, on July 26. Members of the Northern Ohio Association of Herpetologists (NOAH) and Keith Gisser of Herps Alive brought such creatures as a black and white tegu, an albino Burmese python, a corn snake and king snakes to display. Sue Bixler from The Ohio State University’s Franz Theodore Stone Laboratory was on hand with a display about Lake Erie Water Snakes and other island reptilian residents. According to Ray Novotny, outdoor education manager and coordinator of the exhibit, the event was started in 1987 and has taken place every other year. “For me, snakes drew me to nature as a kid and my love of it has never gone away. This event is to educate everyone about reptiles and create an interest in them, especially for the children. Snakes are so intriguing to people but they may fear them. People are nervous around t hem, but st ill int rig ued,” Novotny said. Attendees had the opportunity to pet the creatures under the supervision of the herpetologists and ask questions and take pictures. Children could also make

a snake craft outside and get a temporary snake tattoo. Several Mill Creek MetroParks employees and volunteers were also on hand to help during the event. The MetroParks Farm barns were also open for attendees to visit and pet the farm animals. Kathe Orr and Hayley McEwing, librarians with the Public Library of Youngstown and Mahoning County, were also on hand to conduct story times throughout the day, with their

subject, of course, being reptiles. Children were given a bag full of goodies from the library, including library information, crafts and a secret decoder pen. “Today we are library ambassadors. This is a great opportunity for outreach for the library,” Orr said. Novotny was expecting a large crowd throughout the day. “This event is a real crowd pleaser. We are expecting a very large turn out,” Novotny said.

The PCAB accreditation certifies that MD Compounding Pharmacy has demonstrated a commitment to providing quality care and services to patients through compliance with ACHC’s nationally recognized standards for non-sterile compounding (medications that are not injectable). National associations, such as the International Academy of Compounding Pharmacists and the National Community Pharmacists Association, help define the standards to be met by potential applicants and maintained by those that become accredited. There are more than 60,000 pharmacies in the United States, but fewer than 1 percent have attained the distinction of being a PCAB-accredited compounding pharmacy. The Poland library hosted Dive into Crime with the Mahoning County Sheriff’s Dive Team on July 28. Deputy Eric Williams gave the presentation, informing parents and children about the duties of the dive team, the equipment they have to wear, the safety measures they have to take and the incidents and results that follow. “We go out and look for evidence that helps solve crimes,” Williams said. Williams brought equipment with him for students to touch and try on. In addition, he did an exercise with the students that gave them an impression as to what it was like to search for something while under water. “I tried to include a lot of the kids especially with show and tell and passing the equipment around, it keeps them interested,” Williams said. Norma Rothman brought her granddaughter who was visiting her from North Canton to the presentation. “We want to see what they have to offer,” Rothman said. “They [the library] have a lot of exciting things here.” Librarian Vikki Peck said she was happy to watch the children get so into the presentation. “The best part of this is the See DIVING, Page 7

Katie Dwulit v Matthew Browning The wedding of Katie Lynn Dwulit and Matthew Browning, both of Austintown, took place at 2 p.m. Oct. 18, 2014, at St. Joseph Church. The Rev.
