No program is scheduled following the business meeting. Matthew Commons, an eighth-grader at Poland Middle School, took second place in the Hubbard Optimists annual oratorical contest on Feb. 10. In preparation for its seventh annual Polish Day on Aug. 30 from 10:30 a.m. until 8 p.m. at St. Luke Church and Hall on South Avenue in Boardman, organizers are seeking marketplace vendors of all types who are seeking to reach their enthusiastic, shopping attendees. PolishYoungstown has vending space for 10 marketplace vendors, who will offer any variety of information and merchandise for our patrons during the festival. Authentic ethnic retail, craft, fine art and food vendors are especially requested, but all interested groups are welcome. The deadline for vendors is Aug. 7. DAR to have brunch social The Mahoning Chapter Daughters of the American Revolution has announced its “Fun” Brunch Social from 11:30 a.m. until 1 p.m. on Aug. 8 at Bethel Friends Social Hall, located at 2771 Spitler Road in Poland. The event will include tips to research your family line from Sharon Myers and a light brunch prepared by DAR members. Dolores Ronzi, chapter regent, said this event will also serve as a way to introduce the DAR to the community. DAR members come from a variety of backgrounds and interests, but share the common bond of descending from a man or woman who helped contribute to securing the independence of the United States of America. Any woman, ages 18-years or older, regardless of race, religion or ethnic background, who can prove lineal descent from a patriot of the American Revolution is eligible to join, and invited to attend the Aug. 8 brunch. The Daughters of the American Revolution is a non-profit, non-political women’s volunteer service organization dedicated to promoting historic preservation, education and patriotism. The Austintown library kicked off Puppet Camp: Wacky World of Puppets on July 13. This weeklong camp was led by librarian Annette Ahrens who partnered with her husband, Todd Ahrens, a professor at Youngstown State University. During Puppet Camp students got to create four different puppets, learning skills from the experts — the Ahrens are members of The National Puppeteers of America. On Friday, the children got to put on a final show, making up scenarios to go along with their puppet creations. Annette Ahrens said she was glad to see Puppet Camp come back for the second year, bringing students from the last year with it. “We have some new students, but four students came back — See PUPPETS, Page 4

so they must’ve enjoyed it,” Ahrens said. One of the return students from the previous year was Sophia Sainato. Sainato said she liked the creative aspect of Pup-

pet Camp. “There are a lot of fun designs,” Sainato said. “It’s cool because you get to make your own and at the end of the week everyone gets to see them.” Sainato said she already had scenarios and puppets ideas figured out, some of them involving a Swedish chef and the

Spongebob character Patrick Starr. “I love puppets and sharing the puppets with the kids,” Ahrens said. “It’s nice to see how excited they get about it. They’ve already got some great ideas.” Ahrens said her interest in puppets was inspired by The Muppets.

Summer Play Days at the church are a day camp for two hours, welcoming students to come enjoy fun at their church. Shepherd of the Valley of Poland hosted a Men’s Social on July 17 for residents. Residents from the independent and assisted living facilities

joined together for a luncheon accompanied with music and social activity. Because there were three new residents, the topic of discussion was where one another came from before their residence at

Shepherd of the Valley began. Hugh Wood, one of the new residents, recently came from New York with his wife. “I’m just new around here and I want to meet people,” Wood said. If Cremation is your choice...

The men were very welcoming toward one another, sitting together with new and old residents alike. Tom Murphy, one of the residents, said he likes seeing others at events like these.

“It’s the sociability,” Murphy said. “There’s a lot of variety here.” The residents sat at a few tables and discussed events going on both at Shepherd of the Valley and in the community.

Poland Women’s Club gives back to The Hope Center for Cancer Care The Poland Women’s Club presented a check to The Silver Linings’s Cancer Fund through The Hope Center for Cancer Care on July 8. Outgoing president of the women’s club, Ruth Ebert, had a sentimental connection to the center. “My husband came here and I put The Hope Center in when we discussed charities,” Ebert said. Ebert continued that the center had always treated them well and she was happy to give back to such a wonderful foundation. Football tickets on sale The Poland High School Athletic Department has announced the start of football ticket sales for the upcoming season. Starting Aug. 10-14, current reserved season ticket holders may pick up their tickets and parking passes in the high school Athletic Office from 9 a.m. until 2 p.m. Anyone wishing to become a reserved season ticket holder may purchase tickets starting Aug. 17-26 from 9 a.m. until 2 p.m. Also, starting at 9 a.m. on
