The Austintown library hosted its first Techie Camp sponsored by Tech Corp starting on Aug. 5. Instructors Maia Pickens and Madison Zene ran the camp throughout the week. Ten middle-schoolers, broken into groups of two, participated in the camp working to build and program their own robots. The groups utilized Lego Mindstorms EV3 building kits to create their projects. “They started out building simple projects that they can move themselves and then as the week advanced they are making projects that are self moving,” Pickens said. She said that each day students come in with a new project to work on. On the first day of camp, students created a top spinner and a mini rover. students worked on a robot puppy, and on the third day they created their own self moving cars. On Thursday, each group worked to create their own projects, which were all self moving robots with a sensor. “They might have a color sensor, a touch sensor or a sonic

Pickens said that each participant will receive a certificate, a shirt and a bag at the end of the course. “This is the first robotics camp we have run in the area,” Picken said. She explained that Tech Corp

Mahoning County Career and Technical Center hosted a ground breaking ceremony for a new fire tower training facility on the campus on July 9. School superintendent John Zehentbauer hosted the ceremony, which brought together local politicians, fire departments and MCCTC board members. “I want to thank everyone that was involved in this project from its inception to the ground breaking,” Zehentbauer said. The project, which will cost approximately $1.1 million, is set to be completed by January 2020. Zehentbauer said that the goal of the facility is to provide a state of the art training area for everyone from local high school students to professional firefighters. The school currently offers fire courses for both high school students and adults, and Zehentbauer said the facility will also offer free high school level training for local schools. “It is important that our local firemen will have a safe, state of the art facility to train in that is close by,” Zehentbauer said. Austintown Fire Chief Andrew Frost said that the facility will help local departments keep up on their training without having to travel. “If someone wants to do a big training session in their depart-

He said that with shifting state laws it has become harder for departments to find facilities they can use to train for dangerous situations. “We are going to be able to have these firefighters in these dangerous situations in a controlled setting, as opposed to in the field for the first time,” Frost said. Austintown Township hosted their annual Fourth of July parade on the holiday. Part of the event included a f loat competition. During the competition, local business owner and town-

ship trustee Bruce Shepas was the chairman of the event. “T he big gest cha nge we made was moving the competition from 2 p.m. to noon,” Shepas said. “This way everyone can get to their barbecues or family events sooner.” He said that more than 100

organizations participated in the parade this year. “The attendance has also grow n substantia lly due to t he t i me cha nge,” Shepa s said. The t heme of t he pa rade this year was “Austintown... how sweet it is,” and Jim Mol-

nar, of Molnar’s Concessions, was the Grand Marshall. The parade also hosted its annual float competition. The winner once again was Joanna Parker, with West Side Tire. She will receive $250 and a plaque.

Neighbors wants fall sports news It’s time for fall athletics and Neighbors wants to be there every step of the way. If you’re a sports coach or the parent of an athlete, we need your help. In order to get teams and players the recognition they deserve, we want to showcase them in our pages. We can only do that if you commit to sending us game reports and photos each week. If you send it, it will get in. You can email us at neighbors@ vindy.com. You don’t have to be a writer — just send us the information and we’ll put it all together. When emailing pictures, send them as JPEG files and as large as possible.

Provide caption information and where people are located from left to right, front row to back. The sports news we’re looking for ranges from varsity high school teams down to middle school and even elementary and recreational leagues. We look forward to hearing about your teams successes.
