Friendly Squares to dance at Canfield Fair The Niles Friendly Squares will be performing square dance demonstrations at the Canfield Fair on Aug. 30 from 7-8 p.m. and on Sept. 2 from 2-3 p.m. on the stage located in front of the International Building. Famous children’s author’s descendant to speak Renowned children’s author’s descendant, Shirley Eckley, will discuss the local roots, life and legacy of William Holmes McGuffey, “America’s Storyteller, on” Aug. 18 at 10 a.m. at Kravitz’s Deli meeting room, located at 3135 Belmont Ave. in Liberty Township, for the William Holmes McGuffey Historical Society. A volunteer from the Ohio Division of Natural Resources divison of wildlife came and spoke to a group of campers about Ohio fish on Aug. 7 in Boardman Park.

Children go on summer adventures in Boardman Park

Boardman Park hosted its annual Adventure Day Camp for 10 weeks this summer.

The camp was started by Karen McCallum in 2003 and ran Monday through Friday, from 9 a.m. until 3:15 p.m.

“We have had such a wonderful amazing summer full of activities,” McCallum said.

She said that in the 80’s the park offered an “old school camp experience,” put on by teachers, but that it eventually capered off.

After McCallum got hired by the park she said her goal was to start a new camp and bring a school setting to an outside experience.

Each day children attend five subjects, science, sports, arts and crafts, creative arts and team building.

The activities for each day are always new and original.

“The fun thing is with science we can bring them down to the creek, and they can go into the creek and learn about trees and really experience out doors,” she said.

Campers in the kindergarten through first-grade age group, along with camp director Karen McCallum, listened to the ODNR division of wildlife’s presentation in Boardman Park on Aug. 7.

Some guests this year have included the Ohio Department of Natural Resources division of wild life, The Green Team, the fire department and representatives from the YSU anthropology department.

“Wonderful speakers have come in and worked with our campers to have a great summer camp season,” McCallum said.

On average the camp has had 120 campers a week. This number fluctuates throughout the summer because the camp offers parents the opportunity to pay for individual weeks or the

whole camp.

The camp is broken down into groups with each age group, kindergarten through sixth grade, broken into their own section except kindergarten and first who go together.

The camp also employees one counselor for every 10 children.

McCallum said one of the best parts about the camp is that it gives children the opportunity to explore the outdoors, but also gives them a structure to do it in comfortably.

“They really get used to knowing what session they have next

and having a set structure and schedule,” McCallum said, “We are all creatures of habit.”

McCallum said that she believes the standard of care is what really makes the camp stand out.

“That’s what we stress, to leave the electronics at home and to really enjoy being a kid and being outside,” she said, “We want them to get something out of their time at camp.”

Local skate park to be location of music festival The Skatepark Music Festival will take place on Sept. 21 at 3 p.m. at the Wedgewood Ramps in Youngstown.

The cost is $5 at the door and the event will feature such bands as Alteras, Red Nose Panic, Rees Man Dolo & Droege, Wanderer, 13 Lucky, Evidence of Ruin, Whiskey Pilot, Service Monkeys and Gho$tlee. Food will be by Suzie’s and Mission Taco. The event is hosted and produced by Paul Goon.

Weekly square dance lessons to begin on Sept. 11 The Niles Friendly Squares, a local square dance group dedicated to keeping alive the art form of square dancing, will begin a new year of weekly square dance lessons. The introductory session will be on Sept. 11 from

7-9 p.m. Each session builds upon the previous session and will include learning steps along with plenty of review and practice each week to help attendees master the moves.

The sessions are designed to cover all the steps in the basic square dance program. Gene Hammond will be the instructor. The Tuesday evening sessions will run through April 16. There is a nominal fee of $6 per lesson. The Friendly Squares also sponsors monthly dances with alternating dances, or tips, for new dancers to practice their skills as well as tips for more experienced dancers. All the lessons and monthly dances take place at the Niles SCOPE Center, located at 14 E. State St. in Niles. Boardman Park to open table reservations for semi-annual event Boardman Park will be having its semi-annual Baby Bargain Boutique on Sept. 22 from 9 a.m. until 1 p.m. Admission is free with a non-perishable food item donation for a local Food Bank.

For those who have items to sell, they will start taking reservations for table rentals for Boardman residents on Aug. 22 and opening up to all non-residents on Aug. 23.

Table reservations can be made at the park office from 8 a.m. until 5 p.m. or by phone at 330-726-8105 from 9 a.m. until 5 p.m. Indoor and outdoor spots are available. The cost for Boardman residents is $30 for

an under pavilion table and $25 for an outside spot. The cost for non-residents is $35 for an under pavilion table and $30 for an outside spot.

The event will be offered “rain or shine” and will not be rescheduled due to weather.

Outside spots must bring their own table or rent one from the park at $7 per table and may use a pop-up tent.

POLICE REPORTS Aug. 3 Theft: A Jennette Drive woman alleged a former tenant took a washing machine and dryer, a refrigerator, a dishwasher and a gas stove from her rental property.

Theft: A Sheldon Avenue woman told police her daughter’s $204 mountain bike was removed from their front porch.

Bad check: A man reportedly paid for a lawn mower at Agnew’s Farm Equipment Inc., 7700 Market St., with a $5,325 check that bounced because of having been written on a closed account.

Theft: Robert H. Wheaton III, 30, who listed addresses in Stow and on Southern Boulevard in Boardman, was charged after a $20 car radio transmitter was stolen from Walmart, 1300 Doral Drive. Wheaton also was wanted on a Columbiana County warrant charging failure to appear in court.

Theft: A Campbell woman noticed her purse missing from her vehicle while at a doctor’s office in the 5800 block of Market Street.

Theft: The front license plate was removed from a car in the 200 block of Argyle Avenue.

Unauthorized use of a vehicle: A woman reportedly rented a 2019 Chevrolet Impala in early June for one week but has failed to return it to Enterprise Rent-a-Car, 7880 Market St. Theft: Ceira M. Buckner of Ferndale Avenue, Youngstown, faced a charge after $382 worth of shoes and other items was stolen from Burlington Coats, 529 Boardman-Canfield Road. Buckner, 30, also was wanted on a probationviolation charge from the Columbiana County Sheriff’s Department.

Theft: A woman in her 40s or 50s reportedly stole a package of batteries, a phone charger and other merchandise from Dollar General, 4996 Market St. Fraud: A Saddlebrook Drive woman found out someone without authorization made two such charges to her PayPal account that came to about $132.

Theft: Richard Williams Jr., 49, of South Avenue, Youngstown, was charged in the theft of $49 worth of merchandise from Walmart.

Theft: Dakota N. Guy, 19, of Alliance, along with a 15-year-old Salem boy, was charged, accused of stealing from Walmart $129 worth of items that included a pack of bandanas.

Aug. 4 Employee theft: Zachary M. Tallman, 20, of Glenwood Avenue, Boardman, was charged after having been accused of using several gift cards over a sixweek period to buy merchandise from the J.C. Penney store in Southern Park Mall for an employee discount without having placed any money on the cards, resulting in a $515 loss.

Fraud: A Southwoods Avenue man told police he received an email claiming he had been pre-approved for a $5,000 loan before the caller asked for his bank account information, supposedly to deposit the funds. The caller then said an error had occurred and instructed the accuser to repay $500 via gift cards before he discovered it was a scam.

Menacing: A township man alleged his former girlfriend has sent and made four months’ worth of unwanted text messages and calls to him. She also has driven past the accuser’s residence and sat in her vehicle nearby, he further alleged.

Theft: A man in his 30s reportedly stole a $600 rolling mattress from Big Lots, 7110 South Ave.

Theft: A woman reportedly took $252 worth of items, including two handbags, from The Avenue, 511 Boardman-Canfield Road, before nearly $82 worth of the merchandise was recovered.

Forgery: Authorities responded to a report of a fraudulent check being passed at Checksmart, 112 Boardman-Poland Road, where they charged Dena L. Milanowski, 37, of Glenwood Avenue, Boardman, with one felony count each of forgery and receiving stolen property after her boyfriend alleged she had his checks without permission.

Also, 10 additional checks were found in Milanowski’s purse that had been cashed for varying amounts; in addition, she admitted having altered a name on the checks, a report stated.

Theft: A Warren woman discovered $234 worth of prescription pills missing from the vehicle she had rented from a Market Street rental-car agency.

Theft: A Salinas Trail man told police another man stole $45 from him.

Aug. 5 Bad check: Police at the Mahoning County jail picked up Katie R.P. Jones, 32, of Woodbine Avenue, Warren, who was charged with passing a bad check.

A manager with Hobby Lobby, 1136 Boardman-Poland Road, reported having received such a check last month.

Criminal damaging: An Afton Avenue woman reported an empty liquor bottle had been tossed through a front livingroom window. Damage was estimated at $350.

Domestic violence: Wilson D. Nadal, 26, of East Indianola Avenue, Youngstown, faced a felony domestic-violence charge after officers had responded to a woman screaming at someone in a Tiffany Boulevard motel room. The victim alleged that during an argument, an intoxicated Nadal had choked and tossed her to the ground, then refused to allow her to leave.

Theft: Police took custody of Cody J. Blake, 26, who was wanted on a theft charge. Blake, of Thomson Road, Hubbard, was accused of stealing $146 worth of merchandise, including a camera, July 28 from Walmart.

Drugs: Youngstown police handed to township authorities Marquis L. Bebbs, 33, of East Florida Avenue, Youngstown, who faced a felony drug-abuse charge, related to a traffic stop June 29 near Glenwood Avenue in which multiple bags with a white substance in a larger bag were reportedly found.

Theft: A 17-year-old Youngstown boy was accused of stealing from Walmart $157 worth of items that included two adapters.

Identity fraud: A Cook Avenue woman learned that her personal information had been used without consent to open an account online. The victim also was told she owes $500 on the account.

Theft: While answering a criminaldamaging call in the 800 block of Afton Avenue, officers took Anasha S. West, 22, into custody on a theft warrant upon discovering West, of Afton, Boardman, was accused of stealing a $35 pair of shorts June 25 from Kohl’s, 383 Boardman-Poland Road.

Theft: A man reportedly stole $495 worth of property from Walmart and fled on foot.

Theft: A man discovered his wallet was missing from his Shadyside Drive home.

Aug. 6 Criminal damaging: A traffic stop near Shields Road led to the arrest of Gerontios E. Ginnis, 21, of Breetz Drive, Campbell, who was wanted on a criminal-damaging warrant from Youngstown.

This team was the first to try to complete the escape room style event on July 19 at the Poland library. They put together the clues and found Rowena Ravenclaw’s diadem with one minute and thirty-eight seconds left on the clock.

Two participants worked together to put in the correct combination on a lock on a bureau at the Poland library. They hoped to find more clues to the Diadem of Rowena Ravenclaw’s location so they could complete the escape room challenge.

The premise of the event revolved around a story that com-

bined elements from several books in the “Harry Potter” series by J.K. Rowling. A descendent of Professor Quirrell had traveled back in time and stolen the Diadem of Rowena Ravenclaw, one of the founding figures of Howarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry. The teams had to find all of the clues and put them

together to find the diadem so they could escape Hogwarts.

Each small team had 30 minutes to complete the task.

Librarian Annette Ahrens said that she was inspired to host the event because of the successful escape rooms hosted last year in Canfield and her own enjoyment of participating in an es-

cape room on vacation in Myrtle Beach. She found instructions on how to host a Harry Potter themed one on Pinterest, but she said she altered the instructions to fit what she wanted to bring to the library.

Many of the clues used in the event belonged to Ahrens. She even brought a plant from home to use as a clue for the Herbology portion. Other clues used in the game were books, including books from the actual “Harry Potter” series; puppets, small safes, locks, messages only able to be seen with use of a black light, theme-related clothing and more. Clues piled

up on and branched off to the locations of other clues. Some clues were even fake and meant to mislead the teams.

“I had a hard time not giving out clues because I want them to succeed,” Ahrens said.

If the teams did need a clue Ahrens was on hand to help them out, but she said she enjoyed watching them search and put clues together. She was amazed at how clever the teams were and their luck at picking up just the right item to find a clue.

The first team to go through the puzzle finished with one minute and thirty-eight seconds left on the clock.

The Mahoning Chapter of the Daughters of the American Revolution gathered for brunch to celebrate their 125th anniversary at the Holiday Inn on July 28. Mahoning Valley Chapter Sons of the American Revolution were invited and presented two awards. John Dalbec, Trustee of the Chapter made presentations on behalf of the Ohio State Society and Mahoning Valley Chapter. The first award was given to Sarah Keeler, Regent of the DAR Chapter for Ohio Society President, Shawn Cox and State officers sending congratulations and recognition of the many community works performed by the Daughters of the American Revolution chapter. Mahoning Valley chapter awarded its Community Service Award, which recognizes the contributions of the DAR chapter promoting patriotism, education and service to the community.

The Mahoning Chapter of the DAR was founded on April 18, 1893 by Rachel Wick Taylor. It was the second chapter organized in the State of Ohio by the Daughters of the American Revolution. Pop icons come into focus at Paint by Sticker event

Creative children came to the Boardman library on July 18 to participate in a Paint by Stickers event.

Paint by stickers is similar to paint by numbers, but without all the mess that comes with using actual paints. A page of stickers, or multiple pages depending on the size and detail of the picture, are provided for each picture. The segments of color and labeled by letter and numbered, which sticker painters then match with the spots on the page they are trying to complete.

Librarian Amy Burkard, who led the event, said that the process of completing a picture is similar to putting a puzzle together.

The images that partipants had to choose from for this event a ll centered around pop culture figures. Burkard showed the participant an image she had finished prior to the event of music icon David Bowie.

Each child could pick the image that they wanted to complete. One participant chose Madonna, while another decided to work on an image of The Beatles.

Working on and completing the images can be very relaxing, almost meditative, according to Burkard.

Lecturer discusses the benefits of local trees

On July 11, Ohio State University Associate Professor Jim Chatfield visited Fellows Riverside Garden to give a lecture about the importance of urban trees.

Chatfield works in the department of Horticulture and Crop Sciences at OSU. “The trees play a very important role in our environment and in our enjoyment of the environment and in our local economy.

There is obviously a large green industry of landscapers and arborists and people who take care of trees, who plant trees, in nurseries and garden centers,” Chatfield said.

He said that other than the obvious economics surrounding tree related industries, what a lot of people don’t know is that one tree saves individual home owners and cities certain amounts of money each year.

“A 24-inch oak, might provide between $150 and $200 in environmental services annually to a community in terms of energy savings if placed in the right location, in terms of storm water re-mediation relative to what happens during a storm event and how that relates to storm water sewers, relative to carbon sequestration, air quality benefits, and that’s just the obvious stuff.” Chatfield said.

One way Chatfield said an individual or a community as a whole would be able to determine these benefits is by utilizing a free software called I-Tree.

I-Tree allows anyone who has basic information about a tree,

including its type, diameter, location and other factors, to estimate its economic benefits.

The application actua lly breaks down the monetary value into charts, explaining how that specific tree, or number of trees, effects each aspect of the chart which saves the user money.

“We have some really wonderful tools. I tree is really looking at the economic services that trees provide,” Chatfield said, “So we have really good estimates now that a tree of a certain size in a certain location with a model, and looking at how that actually plays out.”

He said not only do trees provide a hard line monetary value to a neighborhood, but the aesthetic appeal of trees and other foliage can have a big impact on any location.

“More than anything it is a wide range of benefits, just to increase enjoyment and awareness of the benefits of trees,” Chatfield said.

He said that most people believe that the main benefits a tree has on any area is to increase air quality, but that simply isn’t true.

“We can’t fix, by planting a tree, the air quality of a big city, or even a town. It will help a little bit but the negative effects we have on the environment through industry are too much to battle in that way.” Chatfield said, “What we can do is increase housing prices, add aesthetic appeal, stop sewage overflow and other things no one ever thinks of.”

Chatfield showed examples of other groups of people, mostly college students, who used the I-Tree software to create signs that let the public know the eco-

nomic benefits of any specific tree in the area.

“Your mission is to start a program like this to show how much economic benefit we get from trees in Youngstown,” Chatfield said.

After the first half of his presentation, Chatfield decided to

take the group on a walk into the surrounding Mill Creek park woods, to discuss the trees and get to experience them first hand.

He encouraged questions, and talked on a range of topics including which trees would be best to plant locally, and what

kind of invasive species harm certain types of trees.

“A lot of it is just appreciation and enjoyment of what we already have,” he said.

The lecture was sponsored by OSU Extension, Mill Creek Metro Parks and the Youngstown City Scape.

Part-Time Public Safety Officers These positions are responsible for providing safety and security for Westminster College, student staff, visitors and property, maintaining peace and order, controlling and preventing crime and upholding College standards of conduct. Donald Seely and the former Barbara Wentz were married Aug. 22, 1958, at Zion Lutheran Church in New Middletown. He is a retired attorney, formerly affiliated with Midland Title-Intercounty. Mrs. Seely is a retired teacher, having taught in the Poland schools, Villa Maria High School and Youngstown State University. The couple live in Poland.
