Robotics Camp offers STEM skills By ABBY SLANKER neighbors@vindy.com

The fourth annual Robotics Camp for fifth- through eighthgraders took place at Canfield High School on Aug. 7-11, with approximately 40 first-year, second-year and third-year students attending. The camp was taught primarily by Canfield High School teachers, several alumni, students and community volunteers, including Nick Crescimanno, Dave Wilkeson, CHS CAD and engineering graphics teacher Don Crum, Steve Bennett, Youngstown State University physics professor Dr. Mike Crescimanno and YSU computer science professor Dr. Bonita Sharif. Throughout the week, the first-year campers were taught how to use hand tools and computer programs to build and program their own robot. The campers built their robots from a kit, including soldering wires and adding LED lights, while applying the concepts they learned. “We have 27 first-year campers this week. Most of them are fifth- and sixth-grade students. This is the most first-years we have had. It’s all new to them. Generally, this is their first time with exposure to hardware and electronics. They learn how to solder and work with circuits,” Dr. Crescimanno said. The second-year campers used what they had learned last year and built remote control robots, while the thirdyear students concentrated on modifying an existing robot, built by the high school robotics team. “Within two days of camp, our third year students had completed four out of their five tasks,” Dr. Crescimanno said. Wilkeson said the purpose of the camp is to get the students interested in robotics at

a young age and build interest for the high school Circuit Birds Robotics Team. “The purpose of this camp is to expose the younger students in grades five through eight to robotics and STEM, and build interest for the high school robotics team. It also provides the eighth-grade students an opportunity to learn leadership skills and gain experience as they help the first-year students with the building of their robots,“ Wilkeson said. The camp culminated with a competition for the advanced campers, similar to the FIRST Competition the high school robotics team participates in each year. “Our competition is a mini version of the FIRST Competition the high school robotics team participates in each year. It is on a much smaller scale, of course, but it’s the same idea and lets the campers experience a robotics competition. The kids are divided into small teams to compete, with each team building a robot to enter into the competition. If they have a problem with their robot, they come up with a solution as a team on their own,” Wilkeson said. Wi l keson sa id t he ca mp would not be possible without the volunteers and mentors who donate their time and efforts. “The volunteers and mentors are an integral part of this camp. The Circuit Birds team members and graduates who are now in college come back to help with this camp and we would not be able to offer this camp without them. They are so important to the program and such an important component to the camp. And with them studying robotics and engineering in college, they bring us up-to-date experience,” Wilkeson said.

Dairy Queen employees win helicopter ride Neighbors | Submitted

Ray and Chrissy Smith, owners of the Cornersburg, Austintown, Columbiana and Boardman Dairy Queen locations, recently had a contest with their employees. They purchased a ride on the Akron Children’s Hospital life flight helicopter, called the “Air Bear” at a charity auction. The employees at their locations that sold the most “Miracle Balloons” would win the ride. Winners had to be 18-years or older to ride. On July 29, Nicole Douglas of Canfield and Cassie Savo of Youngstown, took their first ride in a helicopter. Both girls work at the Cornersburg DQ location. Other balloons sellers recognized were Cassidy Kimbrough, the top seller at the Cornersburg DQ location; Amy Ziccardi from Austintown DQ location; Alissa Baxter from the Austintown DQ location; Shelby Hilbert from the Columbiana DQ location and Destinee McGee from the Boardman DQ location. “Miracle Treat Day” took place on July 27. One dollar or more from every Blizzard Treat sold that day was donated to the local Akron Children’s Hospital in Boardman. Last year, the four DQ locations owned by the Smiths donated more than $10,000 to Akron Children’s Hospital, Boardman campus. They are proud to be the top contributing DQ stores to the hospital in the area. These stores are in pace to donated well more than $10,000 to the hospital for 2017.

Health care center provides cool stations for community By ALEXIS BARTOLOMUCCI abartolomucci@vindy.com

The Commons at Greenbriar has opened their building to the public who are looking to stay cool and out of the heat. Every Monday through Friday, from 8 a.m. until 5 p.m., the building will be open and some of the rooms will be turned into cooling stations. It will be free

for any guest who decides to utilize the space. The cafe and library will provide public spaces for people to relax. There is a television, books, games and other activities for people to enjoy while cooling down. Refreshments will also be provided. Meghan Miller, activities director, and Melissa Chambers,

assisted living director, spoke with sheriffs about the need in the community for spaces like this. There are several members in the community, especially seniors, who don’t have air conditioning at their homes. “We just want to be as welcoming as we can and help out the community,” said Chambers.

The Commons at Greenbriar is one of the only places in the area that provides cooling stations for the public. The cooling station will be open all summer long for those who wish to use it. “We can let them stay here and hang out with us for the day. Come to the activities or watch a movie,” said Miller.

The staff at Greenbriar is hoping that with the hot, summer weather approaching the cooling stations will be used and beneficial to the community. The Commons at Greenbriar is located at 8060 South Avenue in Boardman. More information can be found by calling Meghan Miller at 330-726-3700.

Guests set up their seats as The Wrangler Band set up their equipment before the concert at the Maag Outdoor Theater at Boardman Park began on June 29. The concert was part of the Music in the Park program hosted by Boardman Park in the summer. This is the 40th anniversary of the Music in the Part Concert Series. All of the performances are free and open to the public thanks to sponsorships of local businesses and organizations. The Wrangler Band consists

of two brothers, a sister and a friend - who they consider a brother - and are from the western Pennsylvania area. They perform a variety of country and classic rock music. Guests clapped along to the songs and joined in on some of the singing. The band performed the song “Body Like a Back Road,” by Sam Hunt for the first time and received an applause at the end of the performance. The band members spoke between each song talking about themselves, other places they perform and other facts about themselves. The park was filled with people of all ages who came to

enjoy local music. There were couples, families, friends and some people came to spend some time by themselves. The concerts provide an opportunity from people all around the community to come out and listen to local entertainment while spending time together in the nice weather. A concert will take place every Thursday and all but two performances will start at 7 p.m. at the Maag Outdoor Theater. Children from the Boo Squad set up a lemonade stand at the Chic Chateau to help raise money for families in need.

Lemonade stand raises money for families in need By ALEXIS BARTOLOMUCCI abartolomucci@vindy.com

Children ages 3-10 years-old are learning what it takes to be a helpful member of the community by participating in the Boo Squad. The Boo Squad is a volunteer group for children to join to help out their community. The children participate in various things to teach them about differences. Children in Boo Squad host fundraisers throughout the year to raise money to help those in need. On July 15, the Boo Squad hosted their second lemonade stand of the summer at the Chic Chateau in Boardman to raise money for school supplies for two local families in need. The children sold lemonade, chips and candy to earn money. The lemonade stand was organized by Katina Stamos. “We like to pick out an environment or population that the children may not typically be exposed to on a normal, everyday basis to teach them about volunteering and compassion and being understanding of people with differences,” said Heather Hrina Medvec. There are around 20 members in the Boo Squad and they took turns working the lemonade stand throughout the afternoon. The children enjoy serving the lemonade and collecting donations from those who purchase.

Before the lemonade stand, the Boo Squad hosted an Obstacle Challenge to give the proceeds to Go Baby Go! The obstacles consisted of arm crawls, tunnel runs, wall climbs and more. The Boo Squad helps places like the Beatitude House, Ma k ing K ids Count, The Golden String and others. The children get excited when they have the opportunity to deliver the items they gathered and see the look of surprise and thankfulness the recipients have on their faces.

Members of the Canfield High School football teams volunteered at the Canfield Gridiron Club’s tenth annual Meet the Team Steak Fry.

Gridiron Club grills up steak dinner By ABBY SLANKER neighbors@vindy.com

Members of the Canfield Gridiron Club served as grill masters as they grilled up the steaks during the club’s tenth annual Meet the Team Steak Fry fundraiser at the Canfield High School cafeteria on Aug. 12. The Canfield Gridiron Club is the booster club for the high school football teams and cheerleading squads. Each football squad, from seventh-grade to varsity, took shifts during the dinner, including bussing, cleaning tables and doing dishes. Throughout the day, each team, along with their cheerleaders, were introduced by Nancy Dove in the high school gym to family and friends with the varsity team being introduced at a rally at the end of the fundraiser. According to Cindy Toohey, communications chair for the Canfield Gridiron Club, the steak fry is the boosters’ largest fundraiser, with proceeds going to help to meet the needs of the seventh-grade through varsity football and cheer programs. “This fundraiser does a lot for the program. All the proceeds raised go right back into the football and cheer programs to provide whatever the players and cheerleaders might need throughout the year. This year, we have purchased new coats and uniforms for the cheer squads, a jugs machine for the football program and have made upgrades and improve-

ments to the game software the football coaches and players use,” Toohey said. The menu for the steak fry included steak, potatoes, corn, salad, bread, dessert and beverage. A Chinese auction took place during the dinner and included more than 100 baskets with donations from each football squad, cheerleaders, football families, teachers and local businesses. Parent members of the Canfield Gridiron Club volunteered in all aspects of the fundraiser, from selling tickets to working in the kitchen and on the grills, and from prepping the day before and cleaning up. The club also offered a 50/50 raffle. This year’s team T-shirts, dubbed the ‘word shirt,’ features the word ‘Purpose.’ Each year, the varsity team chooses one word to be featured on the shirts which will represent the football season. The shirts are $15 and will be available at the football games throughout the season. The Gridiron Club is also selling Canfield Cardinals ornamental concrete stepping stones, cardinal heads and a standing cardinal. For more information, visit canfieldfootball.com or visit the Canfield Gridiron Face Book page. Window decals and yard signs are also available to order on these web sites. E-mail ANGibbs@ canfieldschools.net for more information.
