Poland Relay for Life hits goal for second year The Poland Relay for Life has hit its fundraising goal two years in a row. In 2016, the Poland Relay for Life hit its goal of $53,000. This year’s goal was $55,000 and the 2017 Poland Relay for Life hit this mark by earning $55,163. The relay had until Aug. 31 to reach this goal, and through several generous donations and fundraising incentives, they were successful. The Poland Relay for Life leadership and teams thank all communities, sponsors, supporters, families and friends for making this possible. The Poland Relay for Life is now making big plans for next year’s event. The 2018 theme will be “Luau for Life.” This celebration of life, sand and surf will feature a luau for the survivors and caregivers, and fun tropical activities throughout the event. Every team will select a tropical island as their own inspiration. The date of the 2018 Poland Relay for Life will be announced in a few months. Sept. 1 is the beginning of the 2018 relay season, and the Poland Relay for Life hopes to sign up several new
teams to help them hit their goal for a third year. Anyone wishing to start a team should contact Kim Deemer at 330-423-8941.

Children rewarded with ice cream at library event by Zack Shively zshively@vindy.com
The Poland library rewarded the children in the summer reading program with an Ice Cream Bash at the library on Aug. 8. The library gave the children of the summer reading program a fun day full of games and ice cream. Upon first walking into the meeting room of the library, there were areas prepared for crafting, games for playing and a table meant for serving. The librarians led the first game played by the participants. Thirty children sat in the middle of the room and listened for the instructions to the game. Four pillars surrounded them, each with a different picture. The children stood by the pillars while the librarians grabbed pictures from a bag. The children had to sit back down in the middle of the room if the picture the librarian grabbed corresponded with the one on the
pillar by which they stood. The winners of the game were the last few standing. After playing that game a few times, the librarians let the children play at the stations set up around the room. One area had crayons, glue and paper for drawing and pasting. A giant Connect Four game the size of the children stood on the other side of the room. The librarians had tables with magnets on both sides of the room. In the back, the children enjoyed a game of bowling. The children then gathered together to eat ice cream. The librarians scooped vanilla, chocolate, Neapolitan or sour raspberry sherbet into cups for the children as their treat. Motorcycle run raises money for dogs and cats By ALEXIS BARTOLOMUCCI abartolomucci@vindy.com
Motorcyclists revved their engines on July 16 for the sixth annual Motorcycle Run hosted by West Side Cats at Austintown Park. This year West Side Cats partnered with Pawz 2 Adopt to raise money for their shelter dogs and cats. Both shelters are volunteer-run and no-kill. “We are basically two small shelters and we decided to try and see if we could get a bigger crowd,” said Jane Polish, Presi-
dent of West Side Cats. There were 60 motorcycles who participated in the run and between 100-150 people who came to support the cause. Vendors set up tents and tables in the park parking lot and sold their products. “It’s nice, laid back and helps the shelters out,” said Josh Hausley who has participated in the run for four years. Live entertainment was provided by Amanda Jones and Ron Hamrick. There was food, baked goods and baskets that were being raffled off in a 50/50.
Most of the food, the gift baskets and other items that were provided were all donations from businesses and community members. West Side Cats works with Petco and PetSmart in Boardman to help with the cat adoption. The shelter usually deals with around 600-800 cats a year.
“Right now we have about 30 dogs. Generally we pull from Trumbull County Pound when they’re full,” said Nancy Logero of All About the Pawz. All of the proceeds raised from the motorcycle run will benefit both shelters. The money will go toward vet bills, food, blankets and other items needed to
help keep the animals healthy. West Side Cats is located on Mahoning Avenue in Youngstown and All About the Pawz is located in Austintown. Both shelters can be found on Facebook. Volunteers and donations are always needed to help with the animals and are greatly appreciated.

Library guests bond over needlework By ALEXIS BARTOLOMUCCI abartolomucci@vindy.com
Members from the Youngstown Embroiderer’s Guild hosted their monthly program at the Poland library on July 19. The members helped the guests who attended the program make pin cushions. There were stencils provided along
with the different materials that were needed to complete the project. There were three different designs the guests could choose from for their pin cushion. Guests had their choice of making a tulip, a butterfly or a daisy design. “The object of it is to keep needlework going. It’s a dying craft and we are trying to keep people interested and wanting
to do it,” said member Sue Robinson. The monthly programs bring in around 30-50 each time who come to learn and work on their needlework. Those who attend share their love of needlework with each other and share the projects they are working on. There is a different project for every program. The Youngstown Embroider-
er’s Guild meets every fourth Tuesday of the month from January to November. They meet at the International Order of Odd Fellows Lodge in Canfield at 10:00 a.m. until 1:00 p.m., which involves a general meeting and a program. “It’s a way to meet people and share your love of needlework and different types of needlework,” said Robinson.

Poland resident showcases academic talents By ALEXIS BARTOLOMUCCI abartolomucci@vindy.com
Luke Martinucci, a Poland resident and student at The Lew is Center, finished his eighth-grade year with several achievements. Martinucci became a top scorer in the nation in three out of five subjects in the online Academic Pentathlon competition for his first year competing. He succeeded in the fine arts, science and social science subjects. He attended practices twice a week with his team and his coach Carla Jenkins. These practices occurred from October to May. The Academic Pentathlon is a five-event scholastic competition for middle school students. There are five academic events consisting of literature, mathematics, fine arts, science and social science. Those students participating in the Pentathlon were given booklets to read on each of the five subjects. The booklets contained information about World War II which was the topic for this year’s Pentathlon. In 2016 Martinucci competed in the Geography Bee for the first time, but didn’t make it to the final round. This year he won fourth place competing at the state level in Columbus. He spent time reading his atlas, participating in online study guides and reviews and was quizzed by his parents. Martinucci qualified for state by winning his school competition followed by a state-wide online test. The online test accepted the top 100 scores from students in Ohio. Along with being gifted in his academic career, Martinucci also spends time performing at several Dana School of Music recitals. He has spent the last two summers attended the Summer Sonata intensive camp at the Cleveland Institute of Music. Martinucci looks forward to attending Ursuline High School in the fall to continue his academic career.

Lemonade stand raises money for families in need By ALEXIS BARTOLOMUCCI abartolomucci@vindy.com
Children ages 3-10 years-old are learning what it takes to be a helpful member of the community by participating in the Boo Squad. The Boo Squad is a volunteer group for children to join to help out their community. The children participate in various things to teach them about differences. Children in Boo Squad host fundraisers throughout
the year to raise money to help those in need. On July 15, the Boo Squad hosted their second lemonade stand of the summer at the Chic Chateau in Boardman to raise money for school supplies for two local families in need. The children sold lemonade, chips and candy to earn money. The lemonade stand was organized by Katina Stamos. “We like to pick out an environment or population that the children may not typically be
exposed to on a normal, everyday basis to teach them about volunteering and compassion and being understanding of people with differences,” said Heather Hrina Medvec. There are around 20 members in the Boo Squad and they took turns working the lemonade stand throughout the afternoon. The children enjoy serving the lemonade and collecting donations from those who purchase. Before the lemonade stand,
the Boo Squad hosted an Obstacle Challenge to give the proceeds to Go Baby Go! The obstacles consisted of arm crawls, tunnel runs, wall climbs and more. The Boo Squad helps places like the Beatitude House, Making Kids Count, The Golden String and others. The children get excited when they have the opportunity to deliver the items they gathered and see the look of surprise and thankfulness the recipients have on their faces.

Children learn lessons about agriculture By ALEXIS BARTOLOMUCCI abartolomucci@vindy.com
Fellows Riverside Gardens hosted its monthly Sprout Club program on July 20. Brenda Markley, Agricultural Education Programs Manager at Mill Creek MetroParks Farm, took over and led the class recently, talking about wheat and
“The Little Red Hen.” Children who attended the program listened to the story “The Little Red Hen” to learn about wheat before they started to do their hands-on activities. The book taught the children how wheat is created to make different items, like bread. The children went back to their seats to prepare for their
activity. Instead of making bread like the Little Red Hen, the children learned how to make their own play dough using f lour, water, Kool-Aid packets for coloring and other household items. When the children finished making their play dough, they had the opportunity to go up one at a time and ground some
of the wheat up to make flour. This gave the children a chance to see the wheat turn into flour up close. At the end of the program, the children enjoyed a snack and took their play dough home with them. The next Sprout Club will be on Aug. 24 where the children will talk and learn about pasta.
