The Big Lock Project The Big Lock, a twelve foot high steel rooster, was installed in front of the Fine Arts Building in 2014. Fairgoers were invited to attach a personalized lock, similar to the Love Locks phenomenon that has spread from Paris to locations all around world. During last year’s fair, more than 1,400 locks were clicked onto the sculpture, which replaced the Faces of the Fair as a community art project. Fair lovers are once again invited to either decorate a lock at home and take it to the fair, or purchase and decorate a lock at the Fine Arts building. Commemorative postcards, designed especially for the 2015 lock project, are available for $1, or free to anyone who purchases a lock. The fairgrounds are open throughout the year, so even those who are unable to attend the Fair can access the Big Lock. In addition to the Big Lock, the Fine Arts’ staff will display a Global Art Project for Peace banner. Everyone is invited to add his or her fingerprint in solidarity with an effort to foster world peace through art. The Peace Tree, which collected more than 2,500 fingerprints during the 2013 fair, was sent to Iran as part of the 2014 peace exchange. This year’s banner will be sent to a yet to be determined group as part of the 2016 GAP exchange. The Fine Arts Building will also showcase 1,500 pieces of fine art and photographs submitted by area residents. For more information, contact the Canfield Fair at 330-533-4107.

The festival will have its Second Annual Best Pierogi Contest, which is open to all amateur cooks and businesses. Pink Ribbon Golf Classic a success The Pink Ribbon Golf Classic, which took place in July at the Youngstown Country Club, was able to donate $15,000 to the American Cancer Society. The 2016 Pink Ribbon Golf Classic will be take place on July 18, 2016 at the Avalon Lakes Golf and Country Club.

Lumen Christi schools to open doors All Lumen Christi Catholic Elementary Schools which consist of St. Christine, St. Charles, St. Nicholas, St. Patrick and Holy Family Schools will be opening their doors to begin the 2015-2016 school year on Aug. 24. On Aug. 2, Boardman Township Park was filled with more than 700 classic cars for Cars in the Park car show. People from all over the area drove in their prized possessions to be judged and congregate with other car buffs from around town. Second place winners Peppy Gilmore-Humphreys and Tom Humphreys came to enjoy the nice day in the park with their car. The two are from Florida, moving closer to the area for Neighbors | Amanda Tonoli family. Robin Adams, volunteer instructor, came to teach students the basics of archery with safety being her top priority. Adams said she enjoyed being around the children helping them learn something they didn’t know about before — the education was everything. “We are asking them to feel outside of their comfort level,” Robin Adams said. As well as reaching outside their comfort levels, Robin Adams said it was nice to see the sense of pride students get after accomplishing something like this. “I like seeing them feel empowered and fulfilled because they are hitting the target,” Robin Adams said. “They may not be as good as their neighbor

but they are hitting their target and it’s kind of a competition not necessarily with others but with themselves.” Robin Adams instilled that the goal is for each of them to get better each night. The ultimate goal isn’t even to be able to successfully hit the bullseye every time, Adams said, but it is to learn discipline in using the techniques they are being taught and to use friendship and camaraderie along the way. “Some have already made strides just in the last 24 hours,” Robin Adams said. “So just in two hours the return is great.” Her husband and fellow instructor, Steve Adams, agreed that seeing the progress is incredibly rewarding. “It’s great to see the kids go

from zero experience to actually being able to hit the target and how they improve in just an hour or two,” Steve Adams said. Both Robin and Steve Adams are certified instructors, maintaining proper training to pass onto their students every year. All of the work the Adamses do is volunteer to help keep the costs down for students interested in learning about the art of archery. They get help in regards to funds from the National Rifle Association, the NRA, and the Ohio Department of Natural Resources, the ODNR. “Without the funding and materials provided by the ODNR and the NRA classes like this wouldn’t even be possible,” Steve Adams said.

Fellows Riverside Gardens hosted a special Family Fun Friday on July 24. This buzz-worthy day celebrated the working insect group we’ve grown to appreciate in the spring and summer — bees. Lori Mowad, Mill Creek Park employee in charge of Family Fun Fridays, set up various stations around the Family Garden for children to explore the wonderful world of bees. Wit h her, she had g uest Don Kovach to help educate those who came to the park about bees and the process of

pollination. “They [the children] are pretending they are bees and going from flower to flower to flower, collecting pollen and taking back to their hive,” Mowad said. She constructed paper hives to collect pollen, colored paint, on as one of the exercises. Students also got to bring home a pollinator plant, create candles with wax from the hive and try two different types of honey. “We wa nt t hem to k now where things are and where things come from,” Mowad said. ent interest when it came to car shows — the driving aspect. “I just like to drive,” Dick Bray said. Jill Bray said she enjoyed seeing people during this season that she might not be able to make it out to see when the weather isn’t as nice — especially in the winter. “Seeing people all the time

is the nicest, we have a good time,” Jill Bray said. “We get together and drive all over the place.” Gilmore-Humphreys husband, Tom, didn’t quite like car shows for the same social reason, but for the basic element of every car show. “I just love cars,” Humphreys said.

Peg Flynn from The Green Team came to the Poland library on July 23 to teach children about being their own kind of superhero and saving the environment by recycling. Flynn read “Michael Recycle” to the children, a superhero book to fit the superhero theme provided by the library’s Summer Discovery Program. Flynn had extensive background knowledge about staying green because of her Green Team experience. “This is all about recycling and not littering,” Flynn said. Na ncy Uber brought her grandchildren who were visiting from Kentucky to see “Michael Recycle.” Uber said they had been going to all of programs at the library recently. “They have loved it,” Uber said. “I’m using our resources in the community to entertain the children without spending a fortune.” Jonah Martin, Uber’s grandson, said he liked being able to come and check out the books about anything he wanted. “I’m just a ma zed at t he

amount of people at the library,” Uber said. In addition to an interactive story, Flynn got together recycled materials for the children to create candy dishes. “The candy dish doesn’t have to be used for candy,” Flynn

said. “We don’t want to encourage bad teeth.” Toward the end of the event Flynn provided each student with an activity book dedicated to learning about recycling with a phone number for free curb side recycling.

They have 11 grandchildren and two greatgrandchildren. The former Marilynn Moran married Mr. Smith May 14, 1955, at St. Edward Church in Youngstown. The couple are members of St. Christine Church in Youngstown. Mr. Smith worked in sales for Lake Park Tool and Machine in Youngstown and is retired. He is a U.S. Air Force veteran.

Lombardozzi- Grope vows set for Sept. Ashley M. Lombardozzi and Matthew G. Grope, both of Poland, are engaged, their parents are announcing. Her parents are Anthony Lombardozzi of Wellsville and Paula Byerly of Tipp City, Ohio. His parents are Gary and Colleen Grope of Boardman. Julia’s Bed and Breakfast in Hubbard will be the setting of the 2 p.m. wedding Sept. 26. A reception will follow at Mr. Anthony’s in Boardman. Invitations will be extended for both events. The bride-elect received a bachelor’s degree in business administration from Youngstown State University. She is a medical biller for Medsys Consulting Inc. in Boardman. The prospective groom received a bachelor’s degree in information technology from YSU and is an information technology manager for Medsys Consulting Inc.
