The Big Lock Project The Big Lock, a twelve foot high steel rooster, was installed in front of the Fine Arts Building in 2014. Fairgoers were invited to attach a personalized lock, similar to the Love Locks phenomenon that has spread from Paris to locations all around world. During last year’s fair, more than 1,400 locks were clicked onto the sculpture, which replaced the Faces of the Fair as a community art project. Fair lovers are once again invited to either decorate a lock at home and take it to the fair, or purchase and decorate a lock at the Fine Arts building. Commemorative postcards, designed especially for the 2015 lock project, are available for $1, or free to anyone who purchases a lock. The fairgrounds are open throughout the year, so even those who are unable to attend the Fair can access the Big Lock. In addition to the Big Lock, the Fine Arts’ staff will display a Global Art Project for Peace banner. Everyone is invited to add his or her fingerprint in solidarity with an effort to foster world peace through art.

The Peace Tree, which collected more than 2,500 fingerprints during the 2013 fair, was sent to Iran as part of the 2014 peace exchange. This year’s banner will be sent to a yet to be determined group as part of the 2016 GAP exchange. The Fine Arts Building will also showcase 1,500 pieces of fine art and photographs submitted by area residents. For more information, contact the Canfield Fair at 330-533-4107.

Square dance lessons

Garage Sale

Back-to-school prayer service Canfield United Methodist Church will offer a back-to-school prayer service on Aug. 25 at 7 p.m.

The brief, informal prayer service will take place at the Gazebo on the Green in Canfield. All students, parents, school staff and community members from any of the local school districts are invited to attend. For more information, call Canfield UMC at 330-533-9801.

Bonding with babies and books This program is for caregivers and their little ones between 6-23 months at MetroParks Farm at 10 a.m on Sept. 21. The program will include twenty minutes of language enrichment including rhymes, songs and stories, followed by time to play and socialize.

Tales and talk for 2s and 3s This program is for children ages 2 and 3 and their caregivers at MetroParks Farm at 10 a.m. every Wednesday in September. Join them for a variety of musical and movement activities that appeal to the “young and restless,” stimulate brain development and motivate language learning. Adults and children, get ready to act out stories and rhymes, sing and dance, and talk and play.

Canfield High School hosted the second annual Robotics Ca mp Aug. 3-7. Volunteers who work w it hin t he similar technology-related fields came together to give students in grades 5-8 a preview of the STEM — science, technology, engineering and mechanics — programs being implemented in schools nationwide.

Students had the opportunity to build robots for a contest and compete against one another.

Dave Wilkeson, volunteer and parent, said this camp gives them practice for high school, especially for non-core classes that are being offered at that higher level.

“This gives the opportunity to be exposed to something they wouldn’t have been exposed to before unless they had a parent that’s into robotics or programs or stuff like that,” Dave said.

Dave said this year the program welcomed back 14 students from the year previous and 25 new students.

Dave’s background made in a knowledgeable volunteer for Robotics Camp — he works in programming and technology consulting but said his son didn’t really get into this stuff until he came to the camp.

“My son came to this and got things out of this that he wouldn’t have gotten to otherwise,” Dave said.

Jake Wilkeson, Dave’s son, said he enjoyed the competitive factor in Robotics Camp.

“It’s fun,” Jake said. “It’s sort of like ‘King of the Hill’ where you have to do the tasks and the person that completes it, it’ll be theirs against the other team.”

Jake said his friends were interested in the camp as well and together they all had fun getting to build and program the robots.

“I like that bees help the environment,” Brown said.

Jessie Costas, another Family Fun Fridays regular, said she enjoyed her daughters getting to socialize with all of the other children.

“Any Friday that I’m not working, we are here,” Costas said.

Diane Pitts came to the event for the first time, bringing her grandchildren to learn about bees and have fun in the park.

“They’ve learned a lot about

the bees,” Pitts said.

In addition, Pitts said she enjoys spending time at any part of Mill Creek Part — she loves it all.

“I like that it’s family friendly, free entertainment,” Pitts said.

Mowad said she loved seeing her students be able to come to the park and enjoy themselves and learn all at the same time.

“I have the greatest job in the entire world,” Mowad said. “I love my kids.”

Fellows Riverside Gardens hosted a special Family Fun Friday on July 24. This buzz-worthy day celebrated the working insect group we’ve grown to appreciate in the spring and summer — bees.

Lori Mowad, Mill Creek Park employee in charge of Family Fun Fridays, set up various stations around the Family Garden for children to explore the wonderful world of bees.

With her, she had guest Don Kovach to help educate those who came to the park about bees and the process of pollination.

“They [the children] are pretending they are bees and going from flower to flower to flower, collecting pollen and taking back to their hive,” Mowad said.

She constructed paper hives to collect pollen, colored paint, on as one of the exercises.

Students also got to bring home a pollinator plant, create candles with wax from the hive and try two different types of honey.

“We want them to know where things are and where things come from,” Mowad said.

The Poland library hosted Dive into Crime with the Mahoning County Sheriff’s Dive Team on July 28.

Deputy Eric Williams gave the presentation, informing parents and children about the duties of the dive team, the equipment they have to wear, the safety measures they have to take and the incidents and results that follow.

“We go out and look for evidence that helps solve crimes,” Williams said.

Wi l lia ms broug ht equipment with him for students to touch and try on. In addition, he did an exercise with the students that gave them an impression as to what it was like to search for something while under water.

“I tried to include a lot of the kids especially with show and tell and passing the equipment around, it keeps them interested,” Williams said.

Gant receives scholarship Stephen Gant, of Canfield, received a full tuition Scholarship and the Provost Scholarship to attend The Ohio State University this fall. He won the Valentino Physics Academic Scholarship, awarded to one person each year at the Ohio State. Gant plans to major in Physics while studying at OSU in Columbus this Fall. He graduated in the top 10 of his class at Canfield High School, ran for the cross country team and was president of the Canfield speech and debate team in his senior year.

The National Buddy Walk Program The Down Syndrome Association of the Valley 2015 Buddy Walk is one of more than 250 Buddy Walk events planned in cities across the country and around the world this fall in and around October in celebration of Down Syndrome Awareness Month. The bride graduated from Youngstown State University with an associate degree in prekindergarten education. She is employed as a service adviser for Cerni Motor Sales Inc. The groom graduated from Ohio University with a bachelor’s degree in engineering management and technology. He is attending Robert Morris University, working toward a master’s degree in engineering management. He is employed as a printed electronics and shipping manager for Cubbison Co. The bride wore a strapless, corset-back gown of organza over satin. It featured a multilayered skirt accented with rhinestones at the dropped waist and a chapel-length train. She fashioned her veil from her mother’s wedding gown.

Honor attendants for the bride were her sister, Stephanie Russo, and Corinn Sanders.

Evans-Sitler engagement is announced Rosemarie Evans of Austintown is announcing the engagement and upcoming wedding of her daughter, Jessica Evans of Austintown, and William J. Sitler of North Jackson.

Miss Evans’ father is the late Thomas R. Evans. Mr. Sitler is the son of Paul and Barbara Sitler of North Jackson.

The couple are planning a Sept. 19 wedding.

The bride-elect received a bachelor’s degree in nursing from Kent State University. She is employed at ValleyCare Northside Medical Center in Youngstown.

The prospective groom is employed by Hydrochem in Austintown.

O’Neill-Runser engagement is announced Brooke O’Neill is announcing her engagement and upcoming wedding to Seth Runser.

The couple live in Baltimore.

She is the daughter of Sharon and Gerald Arnal of Boardman. Mr. Runser is the son of Beth Runser of Canal Fulton, Ohio, and Jeffrey Runser of North Lawrence, Ohio.

Gervasi Vineyard in Canton will be the setting for a 5:30 p.m. ceremony and reception to follow on Sept. 5. Invitations will be issued for the events.

The bride-elect earned a master’s degree in education with a focus in clinical counseling from Youngstown State University. She is a clinical senior representative at Johns Hopkins Hospital in Baltimore.

The prospective groom earned a bachelor’s degree in marketing and management from Kent State University. He is a branch manager with ABF Freight in Baltimore.

Family honors Smiths’ 60th with dinner

maids were Angelle Russo, the bride’s niece, and Alexis Mohn, the groom’s niece. The attendants wore eggplant-colored gowns. Riley Palm, the groom’s niece, served as the flower girl.

The best man was Ryan Ward, and groomsmen were Joe Biglin, Mem Sanders and Nic Johnson and Kris Johnson, the groom’s brothers.

Junior groomsmen were the groom’s nephews Braden Palm and Lucas Mohn. Camden Sanders served as the ring bearer.

Mr. and Mrs. Carroll D. Smith of Boardman were honored for their 60th wedding anniversary May 9 at a family dinner at the home of their son, Gary (Kathy Dunn) Smith in Cranberry, Pa. It was hosted by their children and their spouses.

Their other children are Tina (Ray) DiGaetano of Carmel, Ind.; Scott Smith and Lori Tylinski of Cranberry; Marnie (Joseph) Luongo of Moncks Corner, S.C.; and Megan (Bob) Beam of Boardman.

They have 11 grandchildren and two greatgrandchildren.

The former Marilynn Moran married Mr. Smith May 14, 1955, at St. Edward Church in Youngstown.

The couple are members of St. Christine Church in Youngstown.

Mr. Smith worked in sales for Lake Park Tool and Machine in Youngstown and is retired. He is a U.S. Air Force veteran.

Ashley M. Lombardozzi and Matthew G. Grope, both of Poland, are engaged, their parents are announcing.

Her parents are Anthony Lombardozzi of Wellsville and Paula Byerly of Tipp City, Ohio.

His parents are Gary and Colleen Grope of Boardman.
