Austintown library to close temporarily for repairs in September The Austintown library, located at 600 S. Raccoon Road, will be temporarily closed for two weeks for repairs to and repaving of the parking lot. The closing is expected to begin on Sept.

10. The Library’s Board of Trustees approved the parking lot repairs at a special meeting on Aug. 20, in addition to the exterior painting of the Austintown and Springfield locations. Both libraries will remain open during painting. Ongoing information can be found on the library’s website, libraryvisit.org, or Facebook page, LibraryMahoningCounty. Additional work being planned for the Austintown library includes roof repairs and exterior repairs. During the two-week closure, the library’s building and grounds department will take advantage of the opportunity to do cleaning and repair work inside the building, as well. The Austintown library will have security as needed during this period and book drops will not be available. Austintown library customers can use any of the other libraries in the Public Library of Youngstown and Mahoning County (PLYMC) system during the closing.

Nearby libraries include the Michael Kusalaba Library, located at 2815 Mahoning Ave. in Youngstown, and the Canfield library, located at 43 W. Main St. in Canfield.

Area singers invited to annual Canfield Fair event As has occurred for many years, on the Sunday morning of the Canfield Fair (Sept. 2 this year), area singers are invited to assemble at the stage near the grandstand/concourse to sing during the 9:30 a.m. Canfield Fair Ecumenical worship service. A choir rehearsal will begin at 9 a.m., followed by the presentation of two anthems during the church service. The musical selections this year include “Look at the World” and “With a Voice of Singing.” Participants will be reimbursed their admission fee for that day. Musical direction and additional special music will be presented by Tom and Kelly Scurich, accompanied

by Sherry Goddard on piano and Josh Comport on trumpet.

Playtime at your library Read a story and have fun with developmentally appropriate games and activities that you can do with your child to help them get ready for kindergarten at the Austintown library on Sept. 17 at 6:30 p.m. Activities will vary at each program. Austintown Fitch hosts 47th annual band night The Austintown Fitch marching band will host its 47th annual band night on Aug. 27 at 7 p.m. at Greenwood Chevrolet Falcon Stadium in Austintown. This year’s visiting high school bands include Canfield, Girard, Lisbon, McDonald and Springfield. The Fitch band will play a march medley that includes “Over There” and “It’s A Long Way to Tipperary” in honor of the 100 year anniversary of the conclusion of World War I. In addition, the Fitch band will play “Mars” and “Jupiter” from the Planets Series by Gustav Holst, and “Free Ride” by the Edgar Winter Group. The drumline will also be featured as they play “Smokestack” by Cassidy Byars. The Fitch band will conclude with “The Stars and Stripes Forever” by John Philip Sousa. The admission price is $5 for adults and $3 for students and senior citizens.

Auditions hosted for “Twilight Zone” theatrical offering The Hopewell Theatre and Centaur Stage Productions are collaborating to offer a very special theatrical production this Halloween season. After obtaining special permission from Rod Serling’s daughter, they will present four of Rod Serling’s classic episodes, from “The Twilight Zone” television show, in brand new original adaptations for the stage.

The original Rod Serling penned episodes “Time Enough At Last,” “Changing of the Guard,” “Monsters are Due on Maple Street” and “One for the Angels” will be adapted and performed on the stage for the very first time. Auditions will take place on Sept. 4 and 5 at the Hopewell Theatre, located at 702 Mahoning Avenue in Youngstown. Auditions will begin at 6 p.m. both nights. The show requires actors of all ages, from age 6 through adult, of all races, genders and sizes, and everyone from neophyte to veteran is encouraged to audition. All roles are open and available. Auditioners will be asked to read from the script. This is a great opportunity for first timers, and seasoned veterans alike. Performances will be Oct. 19, 20, 26, 27 and a matinee on Oct. 28. Austintown works for young student success

Au st i ntow n E lement a r y School worked with the United Way to organize a three week Success by 6 program.

AES had eight Success by 6 classrooms, seven of which were funded by the United Way. Austintown has the biggest program in the area, which Kristina Warga, who organizes the program in Austintown, attributes to a rising range of needs for incoming students.

“We accept students into the program with young birthdays, students who have never been to preschool, if the preschool recommends them coming, and also ones whose parents think they need the social or emotion-

al aspect of it,” Warga said, “You would be surprised most of the students need one aspect of it.”

The program has a multitude of benefits, according to Warga, including introducing students to the large AES building, school staff members and class room schedules.

The program is designed to help children who are getting ready to enter kindergarten gain the skills they need to be successful.

Warga said that its important because it gives children a new level of comfort and excitement with starting school.

Children begin the days in their classroom doing a lesson as a class, before they are broken into smaller groups to go to

“centers” where they work on individual skills.

Warga said centers can work on any skill, including rhyming words, reading, math skills or more depending on the day and teacher.

“We try to make it a typical kindergarten day, just shortened into six hours,” Warga said.

Each class room works on Math and Language Arts courses every day, according to Warga, along with centers.

“The day is not too long so they aren’t overwhelmed but still enough time for them to learn a lot of the procedures, rules, routines and they get to meet a lot of friends also,” Warga said.

dents gain access to the program by offering transportation.

Incoming k indergartners whose parents can’t bring them to the school can sign up for bus rides, which Warga said can be helpful for the first day of school.

“When they have already had that experience it’s a lot easier, it’s a great way to get them familiar with riding the bus,” she said.

Through the United Way program all of the schools are required to do assessments that show progress in a students skills.

The assessments look at math skills, students social and emotional ability to transition into school, and the Get it! Got it! Go! assessment, which looks at picture naming, alliteration and rhyming skills.

Kathy Mock, the Community Impact Manager of United Way, said that one benefit of the program is that students can be more comfortable with the school environment.

“They feel more comfortable just being in that physical structure and in that class room,” Mock said. “They’re the leaders, they are already going to know the school rules and what is expected.”

Mock said that the United Way gives away bags to all students who participated.

The bags included a calendar, a nutrition tracker and other information.

The calendar, according to Mock, is helpful because it consolidates information for parents with school-age children.

It has lists of daily free activities for families and information on what parents and children can expect when they enter school.

The calendar also offers a form for parents to fill out if they want to get free vitamins through Home Town Pharmacy.

“It’s all together, right into one thing,” Mock said. “These are the

ideas that don’t cost anything.”

Along with the bags given out through the United Way, Austintown students also receive their first Falcon T-shirt through the program according to Warga.

Students are also given all of the supplies they need for Success by Six for free on the first day, and allowed to take the supplies with them when they leave.

Warga said that they buy the supplies through United Way funding, and that it is all from the school list for incoming kindergartners so students can use it throughout the year.

“It’s really nice how United Way fund the program because it helps the students, the teacher and the parents,” Warga said.

Mock said that the partnerships between other organizations and the United Way are key to the program.

She referenced strong relationships with Oh! Wow and The Library of Youngstown and Mahoning County.

Mock said through this partnership, Oh! Wow gave all of the school districts who participated in the program three STEM kits for students to use.

The kits have themes which are sound, water and kids in the kitchen.

“STEM now is a big thing and we are in a global world now and the jobs we see now are going to be far different when our kindergartners get there,” Mock said.

Incoming kindergartners can sign up for the program as soon as registration opens each year. It is free to join.

“This gives them a little jump start and helps them get ready,” Mock said.

“Arthur” author Marc Brown celebrates summer reading

Author and illustrator Marc Brown delivered a speech at the summer reading program’s annual breakfast on July 27 at Stambaugh Auditorium.

“It’s a big responsibility, but its like connecting with friends.”

This is what Marc Brown, author and illustrator of the “Arthur” books, said it felt like to give a talk to a group of children who grew up with Arthur as a house hold name.

“He has been a part of so many families lives and things that have happened on Arthur have reflected in their lives. It’s just an amazing thing for me,” Brown said.

On July 27, Brown gave a talk as part of the Summer Discovery reading program put on by the Mahoning County libraries.

Children who completed the summer reading program by July 22 and submitted the results were invited to join the author for a free breakfast at Stambaugh Auditorium.

“I think programs like this get kids and families excited about

books,” Brown said. “We can’t get enough of that.”

The event was by invitation only and to gain an entrance children had to read 30 books and earn eight badges by doing a varying number of activities based on their age group.

“It gets them off the electronics, heightens their reading levels and really keeps them busy,” said Stephanie Kasner, who attended the event with her two children Dakota and Donald.

Though the Kasner’s have done summer reading for years, this is the first time they have attended the breakfast.

Dakota said her favorite books to read over the summer were the Nancy Drew series, and that she loved going to the library with her mom.

“We would go almost every day, it was so, so, so much fun,” she said.

Lynn Hines and Jayda Ward attended the Discover Reading breakfast on July 27 at Stambaugh Auditorium.

“We really like the program, its very nice and we had a lot of fun,” Stephanie said. “It’s something we can all go do together.”

The goal of the program, according to Janet Loew, the library marketing director, is to encourage children to be excited about literature and continue to study in the summer months.

The event hosted more than 600 people. Children who attended the event were given first place medals and a pair of glasses that look like Arthur’s.

After the breakfast, Brown was introduced to the crowd.

He discussed his life both before and after writing Arthur, and what the process has been like for him.

“I love my job,” Brown said.

“I get to write stories, and draw pictures and work with kids.

You guys are my boss.”

Brown said that the inspiration for the books came to him when one of his sons asked for a bed time story about a “weird animal.”

This, Brown said, started his path into writing and illustrating “Arthur,” which today is the longest running children’s animated television series.

“PBS came to me and wanted to use TV to make kids want to read and go to the library,” He said about starting the animated show.

He also discussed meeting with five U.S. presidents, Vladamir Putin, the president of Russia, and other famous people including Fred Rogers and Whoopi Goldburg.

The key to his success, Brown said, was that the first thing he had to do as a children’s author is to respect them and understand the importance his work.

“I appreciate what I do so much,” Brown said, “I am so grateful for the job that they have given me. It’s their support and interest in what I do and write that has given me my work which I love.”

Brown wrapped up the presentation by reading “Wild About Books,” a book by Judy Sierra that Brown illustrated, to the crowd.

The library also offered a book signing with Brown and had “Arthur” books available for sale through out the event.

Embroidery guild shares skills and fellowship

Fans of all types of needlework, but especially quilting, came to the Boardman library on July 20 for Crazy Quilting.

Volunteers leading the event came from Canfield, Poland, Salem, New Castle Bessemer

and more. A few of them came with connections to local businesses that support the guild and cater to embroidery and quilting, such as the Log House in New Castle, Pa. (724-6678444) and With Needle in Hand in Boardman (330-758-8122).

The participants set up at three tables within the library meeting room and gathered their supplies, which included kits that were put together by the embroidery guild. A table filled with examples was placed at the back of the room to showcase intricate projects and past work.

the event and that it’s a great chance for them to gather, talk and work together, and learn new skills to expand their quilting and embroidery talents. The participants that met on July 20 came to Crazy Quilting events in the past and all were past the beginners stage.

The project for this meeting involved embroidery. A brief history of embroidery was given by Power. She discussed the importance of washing your hands prior to beginning a project to minimize the risk of oils from your fingers staining your project. The participants then read over the instructions for the project before picking their first stitch. The volunteers made their way throughout the room, providing any assistance needed.

The Youngstown Embroidery Guild, which formed in 1974, meets on the fourth Tuesday of the month at 10 a.m. in Odd Fellows Hall, located at 111 South Broad Street in Canfield, next to Dairy Queen. The room they use is in the back of the building in the basement New guests are always welcome.

Crazy Quilting will continue on Aug. 21 at 10 a.m. at the Poland library. The project will be a Christmas tree ornament design that will feature Swedish weaving on huck toweling.

The Governing Board of the Mahoning County Career and Technical Center recently announced that John Zehentbauer has been selected as the new Superintendent of MCCTC, effective Aug. 1. Zehentbauer has been at the Mahoning County Career and Technical Center since 1991 when he taught Aviation Maintenance Technology for eight years. He then served as Career Technical Supervisor from 2000-2007 before moving on to become the MCCTC Director. Most recently Zehentbauer has served as assistant superintendent of the school. He earned his Bachelor’s and Master’s degrees at Kent State University where he is also an adjunct professor.

The Niles Friendly Squares will be performing square dance demonstrations at the Canfield Fair on Aug. 30 from 7-8 p.m. and on Sept.

2 from 2-3 p.m. on the stage located in front of the International Building. A new year of weekly square dance lessons will begin on Sept. 11 from 7-9 p.m. The Tuesday evening sessions will run through April 16, 2019. There is a fee of $6 per person per lesson. Austintown Alumni Association hosts annual raffle The Austintown Alumni Association is selling raffle tickets for this year’s scholarship and mini grant fund raiser. Members are selling a book of six raffle tickets for $5 or individual tickets for $1 each. The first prize is $500 cash; second prize is gift certificates to local businesses worth at least $250; and the third prize is dinner for two at Rachel’s Restaurant and dinner for two at The Manor, valued at $50 each. Proceeds from this project support the association’s scholarship fund, which awarded six $1,000 scholarships to Fitch seniors who graduated in June, and mini grants to teachers who applied for these grants to support classroom instruction. The winners of this year’s raffle will be announced during half time at the football game at Falcon Stadium on Sept. 14.

Happily Ever After Caranos celebrate 50th anniversary with dinner AUSTINTOWN

Mr. and Mrs. Ken Carano recently celebrated their golden wedding anniversary with a family dinner.

The couple’s children are Kenneth (Christine) Carano Jr. and Patricia (Darren) Machuga, all of Canfield; and Marla (Brian) Carano-Honen of Columbus. Their grandchildren, Dominic Carano, Joseph and Vincent Machuga and Julia Honen, complete the family.

Mr. Carano married the former Linda Saadey on June 29, 1968, at the original St. Maron Church on Forest Avenue in Youngstown, and moved to Rochester, N.Y., after honeymooning in Disneyland. Mr. Carano taught at Greece Arcadia High School in Rochester and, a few years later, he accepted a new position at Austintown Fitch High School where he taught and coached for 30 years until he retired.

The Caranos worked together to help finance the Austintown Fitch Speech and Debate Team.

The couple’s late-afternoon wedding will be Sept. 15 at the Old Cigar Warehouse in Greenville, and a reception will follow at Zen, also in Greenville. A post-nuptial reception in the couple’s honor will take place in October in Youngstown.

Miss Bernstein holds a bachelor’s degree in community health services from Ohio University. She is a systems change specialist with Optum.

Celebrating their 60th wedding anniversary July 15 at a surprise gathering at AMVETS Post 44 in Struthers were Mr. and Mrs. Richard Kosek of Struthers.

The couple are the parents of Denise (Glen) Esposito of Poland and Rick (Sheila) Kosek of Atlanta. The Koseks’ grandchildren are Eric and Evan Esposito and Kendall, Nick and Courtney Kosek.

Mr. Kosek and the former Judith Adams were married July 19, 1958, at St. Nicholas Church in Struthers.

She retired in 2000 from Kmart in Boardman, where she worked as a service-desk supervisor. She also worked as a self-employed hairdresser for 20 years. Mrs. Kosek enjoys sewing, quilting, needlework and flower arranging.

Mr. Kosek worked as a welder at GATX in Masury for 20 years and as a bus driver for Struthers City Schools from 1968 until retiring in 2013. He also served in

the U.S. Army from 1954 to 1958, and was stationed in Germany. Mr. Kosek is an avid Cleveland sports fan.

The couple are members of Christ Our Savior Parish - St. Nicholas Church in Struthers.
