Free cancer screenings identify men at risk Mercy Health Foundation Mahoning Valley will fund a free prostate cancer screenings at three upcoming community events. PSA (prostate specific antigen) blood draws will be available on a first-come, firstserved basis from 9 a.m. until 1 p.m. on Aug. 26 during Panerathon at Covelli Centre in downtown Youngstown. Spartans get shot at success through United Way program

Boardman Local School District recently hosted the Success by 6 program, funded partially by the United Way, for incoming kindergartners.

According to Miss Struharik, a teacher within the program, the goal is to “set a child up for success for kindergarten utilizing hands on centers for fine motor, reading readiness, mathematics, social and emotional skills.”

Struharik said that the program, which has been running through the United Way since 2009, had almost 100 percent attendance for all children enrolled this year.

The program ran for four weeks, five days per week, and was structured similarly to a normal school day.

During the day, children learned about healthy eating, developed skills they need for entering school and became more comfortable in a structured school environment, Struharik said.

“As educators, we truly saw the growth of social, emotional and academic skills in the 16 days together,” she said.

During the weeks of class students were also treated to a field trip to Oh! Wow. “The experience of a bus ride was incredible for most and will now help ease the anxieties of the first day of school,” Struharik said of the trip. “Students were extremely well behaved inside the museum as each were engaged with the hands on activities.”

Oh! WOW, who partners with the United Way, also donated STEAM boxes with different activities to all of the Success by 6 programs for teachers to utilize in the class room according to Kathy Mock, the United Way of Youngstown and Mahoning Valley Community Impact leader.

In working with the United Way all of the schools are required to do assessments that show definitive progress in a students skills.

The assessments look at math skills, their social and emotional ability to transition into school, and the Get it! Got it! Go! assessment, which looks at picture naming, alliteration and rhyming skills.

“Success by 6 is an amazing program United Way provides for so many school districts,” Struharik said. “Under the direction of Bob Hannon, Kathy Mock and their team they are truly enhancing the lives of children.”

Kathy Mock, the Community Impact Manager of United Way, said that a huge benefit of the program is the way students are able to become more comfortable with the schools.

“They feel more comfortable just being in that physical structure and in that class room,” Mock said. “They’re the leaders, they are already going to know the school rules and what is expected.”

Mock said that the United Way gives away bags to all students who participated.

The bags included a calendar with information for families, a nutrition tracker and more. The calendar, according to Mock, is helpful because it consolidates information for parents with school-age children. It has lists of daily free activities for families, information on what parents and children can expect when they enter school and information about getting free vitamins through Home Town Pharmacy.

“It’s all together, right into one thing,” Mock said. “These are the ideas that don’t cost anything.”

Along with bags, Mock said that the partnerships between other organizations and United Way are key to the program.

Mock said through the partnership Oh! Wow gave all of the school districts who participated in the program three STEM kits for students to use.

The kits have themes which are sound, water and kids in the kitchen.

“STEM now is a big thing and we are in a global world now and the jobs we see now are going to be far different when our kindergartners get there,” Mock said.

The Boardman Local School District hosts Success by 6 every summer before school, all incoming kindergartners eligible.

On July 31, the Mill Creek Park program Trot with your Tot hosted its bi-monthly hiking event.

The program, started by Cody Stoll, a park employee and new mom, began just more than four months ago.

Stoll, who’s son Teddy is 9-months-old, said that she was hired by the park when she was six months pregnant.

“I spent the whole time I was on leave coming up with programing that could involve him,” Stoll said, which was her inspiration for this event.

The event is a one mile walk through the trails near Ford Nature Center.

Stoll said she chose the paths that are paved, to be sure they are stroller friendly.

the event with Evan and Camryn Porter whom she baby-sits, said it was her first time for this program, but that she loves to attend events like this in Mill Creek.

“Its great to get them out of the house, there’s a lot to do and a lot for them to explore,” Tenney said, “I also think they are better behaved.”

Stoll said that a lot of parents come consistently that are involved in the Youngstown Area Nursing Moms Club, a Facebook support group for local moms, but that anyone is encouraged to join.

“I really think the benefits are that children get out into

nature, they get to explore parts of the park they have never seen before, and its right before nap time,” Stoll said.

The program is offered on different days every month, according to Stoll, but will always be on one Tuesday and one Saturday for working parents.

“It’s a lot of fun for them, sometimes we see a turkey or chipmunks,” Tenney said, “Plus they aren’t spending the whole day playing inside.”

“Arthur” author celebrates summer reading

“It’s a big responsibility, but its like connecting with friends.”

This is what Marc Brown, author and illustrator of the “Arthur” books, said it felt like to give a talk to a group of children who grew up with Arthur as a house hold name.

“He has been a part of so many families lives and things that have happened on Arthur have reflected in their lives. It’s just an amazing thing for me,” Brown said.

On July 27, Brown gave a talk as part of the Summer Discovery reading program put on by the Mahoning County libraries.

Children who completed the summer reading program by July 22 and submitted the results were invited to join the author for a free breakfast at Stambaugh Auditorium.

“I think programs like this get kids and families excited about books,” Brown said. “We can’t get enough of that.”

The event was by invitation only and to gain an entrance children had to read 30 books and earn eight badges by doing a varying number of activities based on their age group.

“It gets them off the electronics, heightens their reading levels and really keeps them busy,” said Stephanie Kasner, who attended the event with her two children Dakota and Donald.

Though the Kasner’s have done summer reading for years, this is the first time they have attended the breakfast.

On Aug. 5 the Mahoning Valley Olde Car Club had its annual car show in Boardman Park.

This year was the 40th anniversary show, called “Cars in the Park,” and wtook place in front of the Maag Theatre.

The event showcased antique, classic and special interest cars.

During the show the MVOCC sold T-shirts and concessions to benefit the group.

All those who preregistered for the event received a free Tshirt.

A portion of all of the money made by the club was donated to this years beneficiary, Nora Sabella a 4-year old girl from Poland with Neuroblastoma cancer.

According to Robert Pennell, a 32-year member of the MVOCC, the money is funding a new treatment for Sabella.

“They are now in the process of doing a stem cell procedure,” Pennell said, “It’s very difficult for the parents because this is nasty. This is supposed to be the last leg of this whole process.”

During the event Pennell said volunteers organized by Sabella’s Aunt walked around with cans for donation money, all of which was given to the

“She has been in intensive care twice but shes spunky.

They thought they got all of her cancer but the cancer is the type that hides on her cells. In order to be sure, they have to go through this procedure.” Pennell said.

He said that the family hopes that after this portion is done Sabella will be officially in remission. Money from MVOCC is going to help pay for this procedure, as well as other financial aspects of Sabella’s treatment.

During the show non-food vendors were also set up along the sidewalk for a flee market.

Local artist Dale Gaus of DSG Fab Designs was present at the event, selling decorative metal works he created.

“It’s a nice place to be, a lot of

people around during the day.

It’s a good event,” Gaus said.

The show also had live music

by DJ Thomas John, a Chinese Auction and a 50/50 raffle.

For children, the show offered a childrens corner play area and face painting.

The MVOCC also gave away 48 individual awards to entrants in the show. These awards included the participant’s choice award, presidents choice award and best in show.

Pennell said the show has been taking place in Boardman Park for about 10 years.

Before that, the MVOCC put on the show in the old Austintown High School parking lot on Mahoning Avenue.

Mill Creek MetroParks hosted a five day archery camp for 8-14 year-olds at the Metro Parks Farm.

The 4H club of Mahoning county worked in partnership with the parks to put on the event, with certified archers volunteering to coach the children during the camp.

“It gets them off the couch,” said Steve Adams, one of the 4H volunteers who has been coaching at the camp since it began.

“There’s a lot of discipline in archery, its a physical activity.”

Adams said he and his wife Robin have been involved in shooting sports with 4H for more than 10 years, adding that Robin is the main coordinator for the

Scott Wright, another 4H volunteer who has been helping at the camp for three years, said that due to the rise in movies involving archery, such as “The Hunger Games” and “Brave,” there has been a recent increase in the number of children interested in the sport.

“Shooting sports in the 4H program are actually growing, its the second largest program area in the state of Ohio, other than agriculture,” Adams said.

He also emphasized that unlike a lot of sports it is something anyone can get involved in no matter age, athletic ability or any other factor.

Aug. 10 Arrest: While responding to a loud argument at a Mayflower Drive residence, officers took Logan M. Rhea, 22, into custody on charges of disorderly conduct, obstructing official business and resisting arrest. The intoxicated Mount Vernon, Ohio, man was upset about a towing fee and continued to escalate the situation around 2:30 a.m. by becoming louder and more aggressive, then refusing to calm down and desist, a report showed.

Arrest: Authorities were dispatched to St. Elizabeth Youngstown Hospital to pick up Michele E. Platton-Debelyak of Claybourne Avenue, Boardman, who was wanted on a township warrant accusing her of violating a protection order. Earlier this month, a neighbor alleged that despite having been granted such an order against her, Platton-Debelyak, 68, had posted a handwritten, obscenitylaced sign in her home so that it faced the accuser’s residence.

Theft: Michael F. Seidita, 27, of West Wood Street, Lowellville, faced a felonytheft charge after a woman reported her purse had been stolen while she was in a parking lot to a Doral Drive big-box store.

Arrest: Police in the 5900 block of South Avenue arrested John W. Hoskins, 50, of South Avenue, Boardman, upon learning that Hoskins was wanted on a felony warrant from the Stark County Sheriff’s

Misuse of a credit card: A New Waterford woman visiting family members at their West Boulevard apartment discovered her stolen credit card had been used without authorization at several township locations.

Inducing panic: After a Southern Boulevard woman alleged her intoxicated husband had threatened to kill himself with a knife in front of her, a police dispatcher reported the man also threatened to kill officers if they approached his home. The situation prompted authorities to close Southern Boulevard between McClurg Road and Washington Boulevard so they could secure a perimeter, a report showed.

Theft: Authorities charged Arnetta J. Jones, 55, after alleging she had stolen two bottles of laundry detergent from Walgreens Pharmacy, 7295 Market St. Jones, of Karl Street, Youngstown, also was wanted on a Campbell warrant charging theft.

Theft: A worker with a Hillman Way health facility reported her $527 iPhone stolen.

Identity theft: A Sierra Madre Trail man told authorities that while visiting his bank to open an additional account, he

found several outstanding credit lines had been established with his Social Security number.

Theft: Mecca N. Sims, 21, of Ferndale Avenue, and Tawanda L. Gilmore, 41, of Hanley Street, faced theft charges. The two Youngstown women were accused of purposely neglecting to self-scan about $7 worth of merchandise that included chocolate while at Walmart, 1300 Doral Drive.

Aug. 11 Arrest: A traffic stop near Market Street resulted in a charge of operating a vehicle impaired against Alwayne M. Green Jr., 34, of Sherwood Avenue, Youngstown, who, police said, registered a 0.138 bloodalcohol content, which exceeds Ohio’s 0.08 legal intoxication limit.

Assault/criminal damaging: An employee with Best Buy, 561 Boardman-Poland Road, alleged a customer’s mother grabbed her by the chin after the customer had become angered while trying out cellphone cases. During the process, he dropped and damaged four of them, a report said.

Criminal damaging: A West Boulevard man noticed damage to a glass-door handle that was estimated at $25.

son Avenue, Youngstown, was soliciting for money at the discount store, in violation of a Jan. 20 trespassing warning to stay off the property, authorities alleged.

Theft: Jamila T. Fusco, 29, of East LaClede Avenue, Youngstown, and Ayasha E. Cummings, 32, of Columbus, were charged in the theft of $606 worth of costume jewelry and other items from Kohl’s. Cummings also was wanted on a parole-violation warrant from Franklin County.

Aug. 12 Arrest: Police responded to a person possibly in distress at a Market Street motel, where they took Charles T. Cialella of Delaware Avenue, Poland, into custody on charges of disorderly conduct and obstructing official business. When he was dropped off after 4 a.m. at the location, an intoxicated Cialella, 22, became disruptive, yelled at officers and refused to desist, they alleged.

Aggravated menacing/theft: A man and a woman alleged a man who had offered to have them stay in his room at a Market Street motel stole $250 from the woman’s wallet and, when confronted, threatened the couple before they left.

Theft: A woman reportedly took a $13 tube of hair gel from Family Dollar, 4030 Market St. Theft: Tyler J. Sadler, 18, of East Oregon Avenue, Sebring, along with a 16-year-old Sebring boy and a 17-year-old Salem boy, was charged with stealing about $203 worth of property that included DVDs from Walmart.

Burglary: To an apartment in the 80 block of Indianola Road, likely when someone removed a screen and climbed in through a window. Missing were a wallet, an iPad and two cans of soda.

Identity fraud: A Cascade Drive man discovered $148 worth of fraudulent transactions to his bank account that originated in Kent.

Criminal damaging: A Glenwood Avenue woman alleged her former boyfriend intentionally struck her vehicle with his, then returned to damage the passengerside’s finish with a key. Total damage was estimated at $1,500.

Aug. 13 Arrest: After pulling her over near Southern Boulevard, officers took Breanna L. Cunningham, 27, into custody upon ascertaining Cunningham, of Ferndale Avenue, Youngstown, was wanted on a bench warrant accusing her of failing to appear in Youngstown Municipal Court.

Drugs: Police assisted with a disabled vehicle on Shields Road, where they arrested Donald Milick, 55, of Weston Avenue, Youngstown. He was wanted on felonydrug charges from Wayne County, Mich.

Drug paraphernalia: While conducting a welfare check at a Romaine Avenue home, police reportedly found in a bedroom papers typically used to roll marijuana, a digital scale and a device commonly used to grind marijuana.

Theft: Someone reportedly stole a lockbox that contained narcotics for four residents of a South Avenue group home.

Illegal dumping: Three men in a green Dodge pickup truck were reportedly seen disposing furniture, possibly tires and other items into a trash bin behind a set of apartments in the 5000 block of Aravesta Avenue.

Theft: A man in his 50s or 60s reportedly took $7 worth of energy drinks from Family Dollar, 4030 Market St. Theft: A Brookfield Avenue woman reported a handgun had been removed from a safe in her basement.

Burglary: To an apartment in the 6600 block of Market Street via the front door.

We have an 8-year-old who looks like she might be 3 and a 14-yearold who is bigger than I am... anyone can do it,” Wright said. Other benefits of the camp, according to Adams, include opening up children for possible scholarship opportunities and involvement in higher level competitions.

“The kids, if they want to, can go to greater lengths. I mean there are Olympic archers. There is a lot more available to them,” Adams said.

The goal of the camp is to teach a younger age group the basics of archery, to see if they enjoy the sport and hopefully spark an interest.

“In one weeks time we see drastic changes in their skill level and their attitudes,” Adams said.

If anyone involved is interested in continuing with archery, Adams said they can do so through 4H by contacting their county extension office.

Currently there is only one active group in Mahoning county.

Delorean Jones, another 4H instructor who used to be a member of the club when she was younger, said that its a great way to continue to be involved in the sport and find a social outlet.

“Archery is much more readily available as an activity for kids,” Jones said, “Its harder to find gun shooting events, but there are a lot of different programs through the schools for archery.”

Adams added that archery is a good way to get a child involved with shooting sports while avoiding fire arms which some parents are still nervous about allowing their children to use.

“A lot of parents are more comfortable with the bows in a lot of cases because they feel that it is less dangerous,” Jones said.

The camp runs once a year and all gear needed, including bows and arrows, is provided by 4H. To participate in the camp students must preregister. For more information, visit millcreekmetroparks.org.

After the breakfast, Brown was introduced to the crowd. He discussed his life both before and after writing Arthur, and what the process has been like for him.

“I love my job,” Brown said. “I get to write stories, and draw pictures and work with kids. You guys are my boss.”

Brown said that the inspiration for the books came to him when one of his sons asked for a bed time story about a “weird animal.”

This, Brown said, started his path into writing and illustrating “Arthur,” which today is the longest running children’s animated television series.

Happily Ever After Caranos celebrate 50th anniversary with dinner AUSTINTOWN

Mr. and Mrs. Ken Carano recently celebrated their golden wedding anniversary with a family dinner.

The couple’s children are Kenneth (Christine) Carano Jr. and Patricia (Darren) Machuga, all of Canfield; and Marla (Brian) Carano-Honen of Columbus. Their grandchildren, Dominic Carano, Joseph and Vincent Machuga and Julia Honen, complete the family.

Mr. Carano married the former Linda Saadey on June 29, 1968, at the original St. Maron Church on Forest Avenue in Youngstown, and moved to Rochester, N.Y., after honeymooning in Disneyland. Mr. Carano taught at Greece Arcadia High School in Rochester and, a few years later, he accepted a new position at Austintown Fitch High School where he taught and coached for 30 years until he retired.

The Caranos worked together to help finance the Austintown Fitch Speech and Debate Team.

The couple are the parents of Denise (Glen) Esposito of Poland and Rick (Sheila) Kosek of Atlanta. The Koseks’ grandchildren are Eric and Evan Esposito and Kendall, Nick and Courtney Kosek.

Mr. Kosek and the former Judith Adams were married July 19, 1958, at St. Nicholas Church in Struthers.

She retired in 2000 from Kmart in Boardman, where she worked as a service-desk supervisor. She also worked as a self-employed hairdresser for 20 years. Mrs. Kosek enjoys sewing, quilting, needlework and flower arranging.

Mr. Kosek worked as a welder at GATX in Masury for 20 years and as a bus driver for Struthers City Schools from 1968 until retiring in 2013. He also served in

the U.S. Army from 1954 to 1958, and was stationed in Germany. Mr. Kosek is an avid Cleveland sports fan.

The couple are members of Christ Our Savior Parish - St. Nicholas Church in Struthers.
