Students build and program robots at camp

The fifth annual Robotics Camp for fifth- through eighth-graders took place at Canfield High School Aug. 6-10, with approximately 40 first-year, second-year and third-year students attending.

The camp was taught primarily by Canfield High School teachers, alumni, YSU students and community volunteers, including Dave Wilkeson, CHS CAD and engineering graphics teacher and robotics team coach Don Crum, Steve Bennett and YSU physics professor Dr. Mike Crescimanno. Several eighth-grade students served as junior counselors for the week.

Throughout the week, the first-year campers were taught how to use hand tools and computer programs and code to build and program their own robot. The campers, consisting of mostly fifth- and sixthgrade students, built their robots from a kit, including soldering wires and adding LED lights, while applying the concepts they learned. The students were able to keep their robots at the end of the camp.

“It is very interesting to watch the firstyear students. Some might like all of it, and some might just like the coding and electronics. You can see which direction they are going,” Wilkeson said.

The second-year campers used what they had learned last year and built remote control robots and solved several problems on their own with the robots.

Wilkeson said the purpose of the camp is to get the students interested in robotics at a young age.

“The purpose of this camp is to expose the younger students in grades five through eight to robotics and STEM. The eighth-grade students also have an opportunity to learn leadership skills as they help the first-year students build their robots,“ Wilkeson said.

Wilkeson said the camp would not be possible without the volunteers and mentors who donate their time and efforts.

“The volunteers and mentors are an integral part of this camp. We are actually looking for more counselors and volunteers from the community who would be interested in helping with the camp next year. If you have an aptitude for STEM and robotics and would be interested in helping our students, you can email me at dave@wilkeson.net. We would appreciate any and all help,” Wilkeson said.

Each student received a camp T-shirt and enjoyed a pizza party to end the week.

Canfield High School junior Thomas McNally has completed his Eagle Scout project of building 10 specialty benches at On Target, a non profit children’s mentoring program in Canfield.

McNally is a member of Boy Scout Troop 25.

McNally, son of Tom and Sharr McNally, said he chose On Target for his Eagle Scout project because the program has been a large part of his life for many years.

“On Target, which is a non profit children’s mentoring program, has been a very big part of my life since I was 5-years-old.

So when I was contemplating what to do for my Eagle project, On Target naturally was where I wanted to concentrate my efforts. Together with my large sponsor, Ohio Structures in Canfield and over $1,400 in donations I raised from friends and family, I was able to purchase the materials for this project,” McNally said.

McNally completed the 10 rifle range stations just in time for some On Target campers to utilize it during their summer camp.

“Together with 10 scouts and five adult volunteers, we were successful in completing 10 rifle range stations. Whether you are

a right or left handed shooter, the seats swivel left and right to accommodate. I was excited to learn that just two days after we completed the project, a large group of kids from On Target’s summer camp were already using them,” McNally said.

McNally wanted to use his Eagle Scout project to give back to On Target after all the organization had given to him throughout the years.

“I joined Boy Scout Troop 25 in the spring of 2014. This Eagle Scout project was important to me because I wanted to give back to On Target after the many years of great friendships and experiences it has given to me.

Since I started Scouts at age 13, becoming a Eagle Scout has always been my goal. I also know that in my future I will benefit in so many ways from the experiences and achievements of my Eagle rank,” McNally said.

McNally had the help and support of several individuals and organizations, and of course his family, throughout the process of his Eagle Scout project.

“I would like to thank Steve Scott of On Target for presenting me with the opportunity to give back to the organization which has been such a great benefit to me since my early youth. I would also like to thank Ohio Structures for the generous con-

I would like to thank all my fellow scouts and the adult volunteers for all their time and experience needed to complete this big project and the Canfield Rotary Club for all their support. Last, but not least, I would like to thank my family for all their love, support and encouragement,” McNally said.

In addition to finishing his Eagle Scout project, McNally has been preparing to travel to Germany through the Rotary Exchange Student Program.

“I will be spending roughly 11 months going to high school in Germany, being completely immersed in both the language and culture. What originally prompted my interest in joining Rotary, was the interest I had developed in the field of International Relations and History,” McNally said.

McNally’s family is ver y proud of him for all his accomplishments and dedication.

“We are immensely proud of not only the dedication Thomas has given to his advancements and Eagle project, but at the same time the dedication it has taken to keep a good grade point average while taking extra classes both online and after school in order to spend his junior year in Germany with Rotary International Exchange.

His school year in Germany is going to be very challenging but we have all the confidence that he is up to the challenge.

We will miss him terribly but look forward to visiting him in Germany sometime in the next year,” said Sharr McNally.

Trot with your Tot in the park

On July 31, the Mill Creek Park program Trot with your Tot hosted its bi-monthly hiking event.

The program, started by Cody Stoll, a park employee and new mom, began just more than four months ago.

Stoll, who’s son Teddy is 9-months-old, said that she was hired by the park when she was six months pregnant.

“I spent the whole time I was on leave coming up with programing that could involve him,” Stoll said, which was her inspiration for this event.

The event is a one mile walk through the trails near Ford Nature Center.

Stoll said she chose the paths that are paved, to be sure they are stroller friendly.

“I really want to encourage young children to come, the younger the better,” Stoll said, “That way you get them into nature as soon as possible.”

Danielle Tenney, who attended the event with Evan and Camryn Porter whom she baby-sits, said it was her first time for this program, but that she loves to attend events like this in Mill Creek.

“Its great to get them out of the house, there’s a lot to do and a lot for them to explore,” Tenney said, “I also think they are better behaved.”

Stoll said that a lot of parents come consistently that are involved in the Youngstown Area Nursing Moms Club, a Facebook support group for local moms, but that anyone is encouraged to join.

“I really think the benefits are that children get out into nature, they get to explore parts of the park they have never seen before, and its right before nap time,” Stoll said.

The program is offered on different days every month, according to Stoll, but will always be on one Tuesday and one Saturday for working parents.

“It’s a lot of fun for them, sometimes we see a turkey or chipmunks,” Tenney said, “Plus they aren’t spending the whole day playing inside.”

“Arthur” author Marc Brown celebrates summer reading

“It’s a big responsibility, but its like connecting with friends.”

This is what Marc Brown, author and illustrator of the “Arthur” books, said it felt like to give a talk to a group of children who grew up with Arthur as a house hold name.

“He has been a part of so many families lives and things that have happened on Arthur have reflected in their lives. It’s just an amazing thing for me,” Brown said.

On July 27, Brown gave a talk as part of the Summer Discovery reading program put on by the Mahoning County libraries.

Children who completed the

summer reading program by July 22 and submitted the results were invited to join the author for a free breakfast at Stambaugh Auditorium.

“I think programs like this get kids and families excited about books,” Brown said. “We can’t get enough of that.”

The event was by invitation only and to gain an entrance children had to read 30 books and earn eight badges by doing a varying number of activities based on their age group.

“It gets them off the electronics, heightens their reading levels and really keeps them busy,” said Stephanie Kasner, who attended the event with her two children Dakota and Donald.

Though the Kasner’s have done summer reading for years,

this is the first time they have attended the breakfast.

Dakota said her favorite books to read over the summer were the Nancy Drew series, and that she loved going to the library with her mom.

“We would go almost every day, it was so, so, so much fun,” she said.

“We really like the program, its very nice and we had a lot of fun,” Stephanie said. “It’s something we can all go do together.”

The event hosted more than 600 people. Children who attended the event were given first place medals and a pair of glasses that look like Arthur’s.

After the breakfast, Brown was introduced to the crowd.

He discussed his life both before and after writing Arthur, and what the process has been like for him.

“I love my job,” Brown said.

“I get to write stories, and draw pictures and work with kids.

You guys are my boss.”

Brown said that the inspiration for the books came to him when one of his sons asked for a bed time story about a “weird animal.”

This, Brown said, started his path into writing and illustrating “Arthur,” which today is the longest running children’s animated television series.

“PBS came to me and wanted to use TV to make kids want to read and go to the library,” He said about starting the animated show.

He also discussed meeting with five U.S. presidents, Vladamir Putin, the president of Russia, and other famous people including Fred Rogers and Whoopi Goldburg.

The key to his success, Brown said, was that the first thing he had to do as a children’s author is to respect them and understand the importance his work.

“I appreciate what I do so much,” Brown said, “I am so grateful for the job that they have given me. It’s their support and interest in what I do and write that has given me my work which I love.”

Brown wrapped up the presentation by reading “Wild About Books,” a book by Judy Sierra that Brown illustrated, to the crowd.

The library also offered a book signing with Brown and had “Arthur” books available for sale through out the event.

volunteers who has been coaching at the camp since it began.

“There’s a lot of discipline in archery, its a physical activity.”

Adams said he and his wife Robin have been involved in shooting sports with 4H for more than 10 years, adding that Robin is the main coordinator for the archery camp.

Scott Wright, another 4H volunteer who has been helping at the camp for three years, said that due to the rise in movies involving archery, such as “The Hunger Games” and “Brave,” there has been a recent increase in the number of children interested in the sport.

“Shooting sports in the 4H program are actually growing, its the second largest program area in the state of Ohio, other than agriculture,” Adams said.

He also emphasized that unlike a lot of sports it is something anyone can get involved in no matter age, athletic ability or any other factor.

“We get kids that come down, it doesn’t matter the size or the age, We have an 8-year-old who looks like she might be 3 and a 14-year-old who is bigger than I am... anyone can do it,” Wright said. Other benefits of the camp, according to Adams, include opening up children for possible scholarship opportunities and involvement in higher level competitions.

“The kids, if they want to, can go to greater lengths. I mean there are Olympic archers.

There is a lot more available to

them,” Adams said.

The goal of the camp is to teach a younger age group the basics of archery, to see if they enjoy the sport and hopefully spark an interest.

“In one weeks time we see drastic changes in their skill level and their attitudes,” Adams said.

If anyone involved is interested in continuing with archery, Adams said they can do so through 4H by contacting their county extension office. Currently there is only one active group in Mahoning county.

Delorean Jones, another 4H instructor who used to be a member of the club when she was younger, said that its a great way to continue to be involved in the sport and find a social outlet.

“Archery is much more readily available as an activity for kids,” Jones said, “Its harder to find gun shooting events, but there are a lot of different programs through the schools for archery.”

Adams added that archery is a good way to get a child involved with shooting sports while avoiding fire arms which some parents are still nervous about allowing their children to use.

“A lot of parents are more comfortable with the bows in a lot of cases because they feel that it is less dangerous,” Jones said.

The camp runs once a year and all gear needed, including bows and arrows, is provided by 4H. To participate in the camp students must preregister. For more information, visit millcreekmetroparks.org.

Happily Ever After Caranos celebrate 50th anniversary with dinner AUSTINTOWN

Mr. and Mrs. Ken Carano recently celebrated their golden wedding anniversary with a family dinner.

The couple’s children are Kenneth (Christine) Carano Jr. and Patricia (Darren) Machuga, all of Canfield; and Marla (Brian) Carano-Honen of Columbus. Their grandchildren, Dominic Carano, Joseph and Vincent Machuga and Julia Honen, complete the family.

Mr. Carano married the former Linda Saadey on June 29, 1968, at the original St. Maron Church on Forest Avenue in Youngstown, and moved to Rochester, N.Y., after honeymooning in Disneyland. Mr. Carano taught at Greece Arcadia High School in Rochester and, a few years later, he accepted a new position at Austintown Fitch High School where he taught and coached for 30 years until he retired.

The Caranos worked together to help finance the Austintown Fitch Speech and Debate Team.

A post-nuptial reception in the couple’s honor will take place in October in Youngstown.

Celebrating their 60th wedding anniversary July 15 at a surprise gathering at AMVETS Post 44 in Struthers were Mr. and Mrs. Richard Kosek of Struthers.

The couple are the parents of Denise (Glen) Esposito of Poland and Rick (Sheila) Kosek of Atlanta. The Koseks’ grandchildren are Eric and Evan Esposito and Kendall, Nick and Courtney Kosek.

Mr. Kosek and the former Judith Adams were married July 19, 1958, at St. Nicholas Church in Struthers.

She retired in 2000 from Kmart in Boardman, where she worked as a service-desk supervisor. She also worked as a self-employed hairdresser for 20 years. Mrs. Kosek enjoys sewing, quilting, needlework and flower arranging.

Mr. Kosek worked as a welder at GATX in Masury for 20 years and as a bus driver for Struthers City Schools from 1968 until retiring in 2013. He also served in

the U.S. Army from 1954 to 1958, and was stationed in Germany. Mr. Kosek is an avid Cleveland sports fan.

The couple are members of Christ Our Savior Parish - St. Nicholas Church in Struthers.
