The group set up the cards for the game “Codenames” during the Strategy Games event in the Austintown library on Aug. 12.

The Austintown library had an event for teenagers and adults to play strategy board games in their meeting room on Aug. 12. Librarian Andrea Zupcsan led t he event designed for members of the community to come together and play board games. They play strategy games like “Ticket to Ride,” “Settlers of Catan” and “Carcassonne.” The library provides some board games, and participants are also welcome to bring their own games. The group first chose to play a small game of “Sushi Go Party.” The game offers a number of different playing cards, each named after a sushi food or sushi related object, like chopsticks or wasabi. The players choose the types of cards they want to play with and places a score card in on the board, resembl i ng a menu. Each score card will show how to get points with a type of food. For example, a player with one or two sashimi cards nets zero points, but a player with three gets ten points.

This event, taking place every Thursday in September at 10 a.m. at the Austintown library, is for children, ages 2-5, who are accompanied by a caregiver. Join them for a variety of musical and movement activities that appeal to the “young and restless,” stimulate brain development and motivate language learning. SATURDAY

Neighbors | Zack Shively

Austintown library hosted a Strategy Board Game event where people could play games like “Sushi Go Party!” on Aug. 14.

A player shuffles and deals the cards. Each player will place a card face up and pass the rest of the cards to the person to the left. The players continue this until they have no more cards. At the end, the players count the score of their face up cards. The next game they played was “We Didn’t Playtest This At All,“ a game where winning is the only objective. W hile that sounds easy, the first two rounds of the game ended with everyone losing. To play, the players get two cards. The players must then pick up a third card on their turn. The cards give strange instruction, such as forcing players to meow every time they play a card. Another card allows that player to instantly win the game. The game typically lasts from 30 seconds to five minutes. The group finished the day w ith “Codenames.“ In this game, two teams compete to find out their own team’s secret code names. Someone sets up 25 cards in a five-by-five square. Two players act as clue-givers and get to see which names correspond to which teams. The clue-giver can only say one word and the word must relate to a cards meaning. For example, if there is a card that says “shoe,” the clue-giver can say “foot“ to try to get the team to guess the card with “shoe” on it. The game goes until one team has correctly identified each of their code names. The event occurs once a month in the main meeting room in the back of the Austintown library, starting around 3 p.m. and ending between 4 and 5 p.m. They serve snacks and drinks during the session. The nex t St rateg y Boa rd Game at the Library will be on Sept. 9.

Children express creativity at art camp By ALEXIS BARTOLOMUCCI abartolomucci@vindy.com

Wonderstruck Artisan Market and Classes hosted a summer art camp at their Poland and Canfield locations to get children to express their creativity. The children who enrolled in the program had the opportunity to attend class four days a week for four hours. Each day the children work on making a new project with the help of Wonderstruck manager, Elyssa Stishan. There are up to four projects a day the children will learn and create. The art camp has been occurring every summer for about four years. Stishan teaches the

classes at both locations and enjoys working with the children. “When they first start they get really shy, but as they go on they have more and more fun. I notice they get to express themselves in their art a lot better,” said Stishan. As the children become more comfortable with their projects they start to become more creative and add their own special touches. They are eager to work with Stishan because she makes them feel like there are no mistakes and allows them to show off their creativity in different ways. “I’ve been coming here for quite a long time. I like com-

ing back because it’s really fun and makes me feel energetic because I like art,” said Olivia Weber who has been coming to the camp for two years and Wonderstruck for three. Children learn how to make items using wood, glass, ink, clay, paint and pottery. By the end of the week the children have a variety of creations to

take home. “It’s always really pretty and every little painting has it’s own unique style,” said Katie Byers. Eva Kale, who is attending camp for the first time, came with her sister. Some of the children came with family members while others came by themselves. “I like painting and how

things are decorated,” said Kale. Several of the children said they enjoy coming and learning how to make different creations. They look forward to attending each class and seeing what they’re going to make next. The camp also gave the children the chance to make new friends along the way.

Motorcycle run raises money for animals By ALEXIS BARTOLOMUCCI abartolomucci@vindy.com

Motorcyclists revved their engines on July 16 for the sixth annual Motorcycle Run hosted by West Side Cats at Austintown Park. This year West Side Cats partnered with Pawz 2 Adopt to raise money for their shelter dogs and cats. Both shelters are volunteerrun and no-kill. “We are basically two small shelters and we decided to try and see if we could get a bigger

crowd,” said Jane Polish, President of West Side Cats. There were 60 motorcycles who participated in the run and between 100-150 people who came to support the cause. Vendors set up tents and tables in the park parking lot and sold their products. “It’s nice, laid back and helps the shelters out,” said Josh Hausley who has participated in the run for four years. Live entertainment was provided by Amanda Jones and Ron Hamrick. There was food, baked

goods and baskets that were being raffled off in a 50/50. Most of the food, the gift baskets and other items that were provided were all donations from businesses and community members. West Side Cats works with Petco and PetSmart in Boardman to help with the cat adoption. The shelter usually deals with around 600-800 cats a year. “Right now we have about 30 dogs. Generally we pull from Trumbull County Pound when they’re full,” said Nancy Logero of All About the Pawz.

All of the proceeds raised from the motorcycle run will benefit both shelters. The money will go toward vet bills, food, blankets and other items needed to help keep the animals healthy. West Side Cat s is located on Mahoning Avenue in Youngstown and All About the Pawz is located in Austintown. Both shelters can be found on Facebook. Volunteers and donations are always needed to help with the animals and are greatly appreciated.

Boardman Park to host Ace Race disc golf tournament Whether you are new to disc golf or you are a pro, don’t miss Ace Race 2017, taking place on Sept. 9 at 8:30 a.m. at Boardman Park. Each year, disc golfers from around the globe gather at their local disc golf courses for one purpose: to throw aces (a hole in one). Tees are moved up so holes are generally between 100 and 150 feet, making every hole “aceable” and allowing players of all abilities to participate. The entry fee is $40 and includes lunch, two Ace Race discs, that you must use that day, and other disc golf gear. The grand prize will be a disc golf bag along with discs to fill it. Additional prizes will be awarded for the longest drive, closest to the pin, a putting competition and a 50/50 raffle. Register online at boardmandiscgolf.weebly.com or in the Boardman Park office. The deadline to register is Sept. 1. For more information, email Shawn Golden at shawngolden@gmail.com or call the Park Office at 330-726-8105. Prize donations and event sponsors are always welcome and appreciated. Contact Shawn Golden for more information. All proceeds from the event will benefit the Boardman Park Disc Golf Course.

Snake celebrates 20th birthday with special guests By ALEXIS BARTOLOMUCCI abartolomucci@vindy.com

The rat snake at Ford Nature Center celebrated her 20 birthday on July 15. Guests came to visit the snake, make a craft and enjoy refreshments for her birthday. This is the first time the snake’s birthday was celebrated with the public. Ray Novotny, former naturalist with Mill Creek MetroParks, pitched the idea to Ford Na-

ture Center naturalist, Marilyn Williams, to host a birthday party and allow the public to come and see something they wouldn’t normally see. While the snake stays at Ford Nature Center, she is used to education children and other guests who come to the different programs. “I had it’s mom and dad, they lived here, and in ‘97 the mom laid a dozen eggs,” said Novotny. Novotny took care of the mom

and dad snake at Ford Nature Center. When the mother laid her eggs, about half of them hatched and Novotny decided to keep one and let the rest go. Rat snakes can live to be in their late 20’s to early 30’s. The guests who attended the birthday party had the opportunity the hold the snake and take pictures with her. The party lasted two hours and was open for guests to come and go as they pleased.
