Residents at The Blackburn Home have special day at library Residents of The Blackburn Home enjoyed a special day in the neighborhood on Aug. 1. The retirement home, located on Botsford Street, has had a strong relationship with the community for 83 years and schedules many outings for the independent senior adults who live there, but this one proved to be a memorable event. A group of residents, staff and family members from the home had a field trip to the Poland library, where they spent some time learning about and touring the building. Deborah Liptak, Development Director for the Public Library of Youngstown and Mahoning County, greeted the visitors and gave an informative talk about the history and benefits of the modern library. “Wow, who knew you could do so much with a library card,” Long-time Mahoning Valley resident Helen Brill said. Children express creativity at art camp By ALEXIS BARTOLOMUCCI abartolomucci@vindy.com

Wonderstruck Artisan Market and Classes hosted a summer art camp at their Poland and Canfield locations to get children to express their creativity. The children who enrolled in the program had the opportunity to attend class four days a week for four hours. Each day the children work on making a new project with the help of Wonderstruck manager, Elyssa Stishan. There are up to four projects a day the children will learn and create. The art camp has been occurring every summer for about

four years. Stishan teaches the classes at both locations and enjoys working with the children. “When they first start they get really shy, but as they go on they have more and more fun. I notice they get to express themselves in their art a lot better,” said Stishan. As the children become more comfortable with their projects they start to become more creative and add their own special touches. They are eager to work with Stishan because she makes them feel like there are no mistakes and allows them to show off their creativity in different ways.

“I’ve been coming here for quite a long time. I like coming back because it’s really fun and makes me feel energetic because I like art,” said Olivia Weber who has been coming to the camp for two years and Wonderstruck for three. Children learn how to make items using wood, glass, ink, clay, paint and pottery. By the end of the week the children

have a variety of creations to take home. “It’s always really pretty and every little painting has it’s own unique style,” said Katie Byers. Eva Kale, who is attending camp for the first time, came with her sister. Some of the children came w ith family members while others came by themselves.

“I like painting and how things are decorated,” said Kale. Several of the children said they enjoy coming and learning how to make different creations. They look forward to attending each class and seeing what they’re going to make next. The camp also gave the children the chance to make new friends along the way.

Adults work on their art at Poland library By ZACK SHIVELY zshively@vindy.com

Adults worked on paintings in Poland library on Aug. 15 during the Painting Party for Adults. Librarian Jan Luoma directed the full class on how to paint a certain picture. The picture displayed dolphins swimming in the ocean on a sunny day and included two islands with palm trees. Luoma considers the painting to be for an advanced beginner as it is more difficult than drawing a sky and water,

but not as difficult as drawing people. The library gave the painters a couple different brushes, paints, napkins, a cup to wash the brush in and a blank canvas. They used acrylic paint and had a table set up to blow dry the painting when finished. Luoma walked around with her print and assisted the painters. The painters mostly used their brushes to paint, but Luoma occasionally instructed that they use their napkin to dab the paint to give it a different look.

Neighbors | Zack Shively

The group works on their paintings on Aug. 15 at Poland library’s Painting Party for Adults.

The library also provided the group with stencils of dolphins to help get the shape correct if the painters wanted to use them. The class did well and treated the project as a fun endeavor. People often laughed about their paintings or joked in comparing paintings. “I never ask anyone to copy me exactly. We all see color differently,“ Luoma said to one of the painters. She did not force any strict rules to follow, adding that they could have as much or as

little detail as possible. Though they used the same painting as a rubric, no two paintings in the class looked alike. Luoma talked about how the exercise focused less on demanding perfect art and more on providing an educational, entertaining way to release stress for the adults in the room. The Poland library does offer painting events like this one often, but they do not happen with set regularity. The class fills up quickly when they do have painting events.

Poland wins World Series crown By Codie Talley CTalley@vindy.com

For the Poland 13-14 softball team, jumping on teams early and forcing them to play from behind has been the key to success at the Junior League World Series. On Aug. 5, Poland did it again, jumping out to a 2-0 first inning lead and never looking back on the way to a 7-1 victory over Washington in the championship game. “The last three games we’ve jumped on teams and we did it again today,” Poland manager Matt Bobbey said. “The middle of our lineup was huge for us. “Jackie Grisdale, Camryn Latanzio, Brooke Bobbey — they all hit the ball well.” Poland was appearing in its second Junior League World Series. In 2016, Poland finished fifth in the 10-team field. Grisdale, who drove in three runs, credited preparation and coaching to their hitting success. “Our coaches do a great job of preparing us for every game and every situation,” Grisdale said.” We’re always in the cages every day and before every game and Coach [Kevin] Diaz does a good job modeling the opposing pitcher and getting us ready for what we’re going to be facing,” Grisdale said. Poland defeated the host team from Kirkland, Wash., but was was prepared to play the Virginia state champions from Atlee, the team that defeated Washington 1-0 in Friday’s semifinal. Saturday, Little League officials disqualified Virginia because one of its players made a post on social media that was deemed unsportsmanlike. Bobbey said he was shocked with the ruling. “We were in disbelief, but we always tell our girls you have to be ready to play no matter what,” Bobbey said. “We respected the team from Washington and knew we still had to take care of business.”

The Poland 13-14 girls softball team won the Junior League World Series title on Aug. 5. The team is pictured celebrating their victory.

On the mound, Canfield’s KaiLi Gross, the only member of the team not from Poland, was dominant. Gross pitched a complete game and struck out 10 batters. Gross allowed just one run, wrapping up a dominant run in the tournament. “KaiLi pitched well all tournament and she did again today,” Bobbey said. As for what this means for the Poland community, Bobbey said he believes that it will strengthen the strong tradition of Poland softball. “We’ve won state titles at the high school level and we had Erin Gabriel pitch at Tennessee,” Bobbey said. “I think this just adds to it and hopefully it will encourage the young girls in Poland to come out and play

softball and keep the tradition going.” Grisdale was much happier with this year’s finish. “It’s so exciting,” Grisdale said. “We were here last year and we didn’t win. We’ve been waiting for this moment ever since then. “Everyone back home supports us and cheers us on and we can’t wait to get back home and show them what we did.” Next for the Poland girls is bringing the championship home and some time off. “The long season is finally over,” Bobbey said. “We have ma ny mu lt i-spor t at h letes on our team so they’ll take [a break] and move on to volleyball and other things,” Bobbey said.

Autumn athletics have arrived and Neighbors wants to be there every step of the way. If you’re a sports coach or the parent of an athlete, we need your help. In order to get teams and players the recognition they deserve, we want to showcase them in our pages. We can only do that if you commit to sending us game reports and photos each week. If you send it, it will get in. You can email us at neighbors@ vindy.com. You don’t have to be a writer — just send us the information and we’ll put it all together. When emailing pictures, send them as JPEG files and as large as possible. Provide caption information and where people are located from left to right, front row to back. The sports news we’re looking for ranges from varsity high school teams down to middle school and even elementary and recreational leagues. We look forward to hearing about your teams successes.

Pictured are all of the Poland Little Bulldog teams with football players from Poland Seminary High School during a Big Dog Little Dog practice. The high school players spent an evening working with the younger players on drills and speaking to them about their own experiences within the Little Bulldogs.

Little Bulldogs prepare for 2017 season with new gear and more The Poland Little Bulldogs are geared up for the 2017 football season. The Little Bulldogs are comprised of boys and girls in grades 1-6. There are three levels of competition for football and cheer - bantam, junior varsity and varsity. This year, the Little Bulldogs have seen a 27 percent increase in football participation from last year. More than 120 children are participating in both football and cheerleading for 2017 season. This year marks the third year in a row of participating in USA Football’s Heads Up Program, a comprehensive, age appropriate approach to teaching football fundamentals. The nationally endorsed program provides a framework that emphasizes coaching education, equipment fitting, tackling and blocking fundamentals and health and safety curriculum. All PLB football and cheer coaches have undergone background checks, player safety training and participated in live safety session. They replaced the entire inventory of helmets and purchased new Riddell helmets for the 2017 football season (helmets expire every 10 years). In addition to new helmets, they replaced a part of their shoulder pad inventory. New, fitted game jerseys were also purchased for this season. Blocking shields and innovative tackle tubes were also obtained, which help reinforce proper tackling technique. This significant investment in equipment is made possible by many

years of fundraising and community support for youth sports. For the 2017 season, the Little Bulldogs are excited to have joined the Mahoning Valley Junior Football League (MVJFL), which consists of teams from Poland, Austintown, Campbell, Columbiana, Crestview, Lakeview, Springfield, Struthers and Western Reserve. The Little Bulldogs participated in some community events this year, as well. They partnered with Akron’s Children’s Hospital to conduct a CPR and Asthma safety session and co-facilitated a parents educational session on concussions. PLB sponsored a Big Dog, Little Dog practice, where Poland Seminary High School football players provided PLB players with instruction and inspiration. Poland Little Bulldogs has prided itself on fostering youth sportsmanship since 1968. Through team building and confidence boosting, the players have developed friendships, memories and skill sets that will last throughout their lives. Since the safety of the players is PBL’s highest priority. Poland Little Bulldogs is a proud 2017 USA Football Grant Recipient. The executive board consists of Ron Newhouse, Rocky Nittolli, Scott Todd, Loorie Varkonda, Beckee Mozilla and Jen Loftus. More information on the Poland Little Bulldogs and its upcoming game schedule can be found by visiting its Facebook page or by going to polandlittlebulldogs.com.
