Spectacular summer celebration By amanda tonoli atonoli@vindy.com
On July 31, Friends of Fellows Riverside Gardens had the park closed for a special private event to celebrate and support the garden — the Summer Garden Party. Paul Hagman was in charge of this annual event and said he was excited to celebrate the 24th year of the Summer Garden Party. “This is the biggest crowd we have had,” Hagman said. “It’s been growing and growing — over 2,500 people this year.” The Summer Garden Party was an open invitation, drawing in supporters of the community’s public garden. “This is a great event,” Hagman said. “It is our main fundraiser for the year. ...Friends of Fellows Riverside Gardens is a non-profit that helps promote, preserve and maintain the gardens.” Hagman continued that the money raised by the Summer Garden Party goes to underwriting programs throughout the year. Keith Kaiser, Fellows Riverside Gardens horticulture director,
said he appreciated not only the perfect weather for the park’s big night, but also all of the people who showed up for the festivities. “It’s so important to have such a diverse group of people, ages too,” Kaiser said. “They are all here to enjoy a public garden that is free to everybody.” The first Summer Garden Party was in 1991 which commemorated the centennial of the MetroParks. That specific
Garden Party helped fund the activities for that year and has been continued by Friends of Fellows Riverside Gardens ever since. This year, Kaiser said, with the help of supporters, sponsors and the Friends of Fellows Riverside Gardens group they have already surpassed their fundraising goals, giving them more for underwriting free programs and education. “The Friends group has helped
made everything we do possible. ...they help make the extras possible,” Kaiser said. Matthew Cheng, a five-year attendee of the Summer Garden Party, said he appreciated the atmosphere of the gardens. “It’s always nice to be here,” Cheng said. Hagman said his excitement continued for plans for the following year, the 25th “silver” year, saying it was going to be something really special.

Julie Bartolome (left) brought her dog, Dude, to MetroMutts: Agility on July 29 at Mill Creek MetroParks Farm to learn about the basics of training equipment with Katie Costello, The Learning Dog owner and trainer.
Mill Creek MetroMutts members meet By amanda tonoli atonoli@vindy.com
On July 29, MetroMutts met at Mill Creek MetroParks Farm in Canfield to go over the lessons of agility and to get familiar with training equipment. Julie Bartolome led the class with the help of Katie Costello, owner of The Learning Dog in Hubbard. “She [Costello] comes out and volunteers her time which is very nice,” Bartolome said. This class was an introductory course – purposed for letting the dogs and owners see and work with training equipment for the first time.
“Today we are just getting the dogs used to the training equipment today, not learning any skills necessarily,” Costello said. Bartolome encouraged owners to bring high-value treats to keep dogs focused on the prize for good behavior and completion of simple tasks. Bartolome said many of the dogs could be overstimulated not only by the new equipment, but also by the other dogs. Costello said she enjoyed coming to the program to see not only the dogs, but the people, too. “I think it’s just fun to meet new people and watch people,”
Costello said. “It’s neat to see what we can accomplish in an hour over six weeks.” Costello originally started helping with MetroMutts at a body language seminar and said it just grew from there. “Behavior was always kind of my thing,” Costello said. “I taught classes for 21-years just at other people’s locations until about five years ago. I knew this is what I wanted to do.” To members of MetroMutts these classes are free and $5 to nonmembers. The next class is Dog Gone Art on Aug. 22 at Mill Creek MetroParks Farm. Registration is due by Aug. 20.
The Salvation Army services students for success By amanda tonoli atonoli@vindy.com
On Aug. 14, The Salvation Army of the Mahoning County Area Services distributed backpacks and school supplies to 400 registered children. Underprivileged students received backpacks filled with school supplies, completely free of charge. Lt. Christine Baker helped organize and carry out the event. Baker said that The Salvation Army has done this for years, each year improving with more help and better organization
thanks to the facility and various volunteers. The Salvation Army gave away 350 backpacks, with 50 to distribute the following week to missed appointment recipients. “We’ve always believed education is a priority and without necessary supplies they can’t do as well in school,” baker said. “We want to help them as much as we can help them.” Baker said she is always happy to see the children get excited about school because they have the supplies they need to be successful. Children get a choice about
what backpack they want, making the pickup of school supplies a fun event. “For me it’s all about meeting people and building a relationship with those in our community,” Baker said. Those that come to The Salvation Army also get the opportunity to gather information about church services and various others they provide. Baker said she was grateful for the help and donations they receive from the community. “All the donors make it possible for us to reach as many as we do,” Baker said.

Finding personal growth in the gardens By amanda tonoli atonoli@vindy.com
Fellows Riverside Gardens hosts yoga classes with a variety of instructors in their beautiful and captivating gardens. Those seeking these classes flock to the peace found within a pavilion by the lake and an instructor trained from the experts from India. Karres Cvetkovich taught the class on July 27, praising the surrounding environment as she prepared to begin. The class is placed in the pavilion right by the lake. “It’s very reliable as the wind goes along the lake,” Cvetkovich said. “It’s the best place to do yoga in town. ...Wherever you look, it’s gorgeous.” Carol Murray, one of the
members of the class, said she appreciated the relaxation and environment the park provided. “I love the outdoors and the park in itself,” Murray said. “I like coming together as a group and being with other people and getting satisfaction from it.” The surrounding air is one of the “invisible” benefits that was the greatest of all when it came to yoga, according to Cvetkovich. “Breathing is a big part of yoga, there’s nowhere you’ll be breathing more oxygen rich air when you take your yoga class than here,” Cvetkovich said. She said she enjoys more than anything being part of people’s positive growth. “They put in their effort — I
don’t take credit of their growth. They try to give me credit sometimes and I say, ‘You’re the one that showed up on your mat,’” Cvetkovich said. “I’m just the facilitator here.” Cvetkovich, not only a yoga instructor but also a former YSU professor for the psychology department, said in her time at YSU she not only taught students, but also teachers about how to help their students in different ways, most importantly to keep themselves healthy for their futures. “It’s the perfect thing to help balance out anyone’s stressful life...letting go of all the tensions of the day,” Cvetkovich said. “You’re planting the seeds for later. Whatever you’re planting now you’re going to harvest.”

Firefighters featured at hero hangout By amanda tonoli atonoli@vindy.com
On Aug. 4, parents and children at the Poland library had the opportunity to meet and speak with firefighters from the Western Reserve Fire District. Western Reserve Fire District inspector and fire education specialist Bill O’Hara came to the library to educate children about fire safety, tell them about a fireman’s duties, show students the gear they have to wear while working and have some fun with treats he brought with
him. Librarian Annette Ahrens said she was happy to see all the children enjoying themselves while meeting some real-life superheroes. “This teaches them about fire safety,” Ahrens said. “I like that it kind of makes them not afraid of firemen in their uniforms.” Gwen McConnell brought her niece, Ella Shaulis, to the library to check out some books to get ready for kindergarten. McConnell said she didn’t even know this event was going on, but was happy she caught it,
agreeing with Ahrens about the importance of being familiar Neighbors | Amanda Tonoli with a fireman’s uniform. “Kids need to be comfortable Western Reserve Fire District inspector and fire education specialist Bill with their firemen in case there O’Hara (right) explained fire detection systems to students at the Poland liwas ever an emergency,” McCo- brary on Aug. 4. nnell said. Librarians Allison Graf, Karen Saunders and Selina Phillips set up games, crafts and a snack table for students to enjoy during their celebration for the completion of the program. Laini Bondi joined the party,
sharing her expertise in Scattergories and not-so meticulous moves in Jenga Boom. Bondi said she enjoyed reading the books for the program and really liked the superhero theme this year. “It’s awesome,” Bondi said. “If it was a movie I would rate it five stars.” This year the regular summer reading program was changed to Discovery due to the varying activities and crafts incorporated — making it more than just reading.
