Crafting a group together By amanda tonoli atonoli@vindy.com
It’s All About Yarn stitched together all kinds of yarn fanatics on Aug. 17 at the Boardman library. During this class students learned about the art of grafting – the joining of two knitted pieces. Librarian Karen Saunders led the class, bringing in projects of her own and encouraging everyone to share their projects as well. Amanda Hall was crocheting an afghan for her son, a sophomore at Austintown Fitch High School. He asked her to make one for the bus rides on the way home from football games. Hall said she enjoys coming to a place and seeing other people that also enjoy this type of crafting. “I like getting out with other people that do the same thing,” Hall said. Janet Morgan and her daughter came to the library for It’s All About Yarn for the first time. “We were in a group before and it kind of fell apart and we stopped for awhile, but now we want to get started again,” Morgan said. Both Morgan and her daughter said they were excited to come back and be with people who share the same interest again.
There is no registration required for this class – Saunders said it isn’t necessary because she has an infinite supply of yarn. With its variety of members, including those experienced in crocheting, the event also boasts an infinite supply of knowledge. “There’s enough knowledge in this room that if you get stuck on something, somebody can walk you through it,” Saunders said. “There are all kinds of opinions here that I can get.” The next two classes are on Sept. 21 and Oct. 19, both startNeighbors | Amanda Tonoli ing at 7 p.m. at the Boardman Janet Morgan decided to rejoin stitching classes on Aug. 17 and came to It’s library. Librarian Allison Graf played Scattergories with students at the Boardman library on Aug. 10 for the End of Summer Reading Teen Party.
The Summer Discovery Program for the Public Libraries of Youngstown and Mahoning County, PLYMC, came to an end on Aug. 10 at the End of Summer Reading Teen Party at the Boardman library. Librarians Allison Graf, Karen
Saunders and Selina Phillips set up games, crafts and a snack table for students to enjoy during their celebration for the completion of the program. Laini Bondi joined the party, sharing her expertise in Scattergories and not-so meticulous moves in Jenga Boom. Bondi said she enjoyed reading the books for the program and
really liked the superhero theme this year. “It’s awesome,” Bondi said. “If it was a movie I would rate it five stars.” This year the regular summer reading program was changed to Discovery due to the varying activities and crafts incorporated – making it more than just reading.

Neighbors wants fall sports news The school year is almost upon us and soon fall sports will begin. Neighbors wants to be there every step of the way. If you’re a fall sports coach or the parent of an athlete, we need you help. In order to get teams and players the recognition they deserve, we want to showcase them in our pages. We can only do that if you commit to sending us game reports and photos each week. If you send it, it will get in. You can email us at neighbors@ vindy.com. You don’t have to be a writer — just send us the information and we’ll put it all together. When emailing pictures, send them as JPEG files as large as possible. Provide caption information and where people are located from left to right, front row to back. The sports news we’re looking for ranges from varsity high school teams down to middle school and even elementary and recreational leagues. We look forward to hearing about your teams successes.

Firefighters featured at event By amanda tonoli atonoli@vindy.com
On Aug. 4, parents and children at the Poland library had the opportunity to meet and speak with firefighters from the Western Reserve Fire District. Western Reserve Fire District inspector and fire education specialist Bill O’Hara came to the library to educate children about fire safety, tell them about a fireman’s duties, show students the gear they have to wear while working and have some fun with treats he brought with him. Librarian Annette Ahrens said she was happy to see all the children enjoying themselves while meeting some real-life superheroes. “This teaches them about fire safety,” Ahrens said. “I like that it kind of makes them not afraid of
firemen in their uniforms.” Gwen McConnell brought her niece, Ella Shaulis, to the library to check out some books to get ready for kindergarten. McConnell said she didn’t even know this event was going on, but was happy she caught it, agreeing with Ahrens about the importance of being familiar with a fireman’s uniform. “Kids need to be comfortable with their firemen in case there was ever an emergency,” McConnell said. Amanda Kollar, another librarian for the Poland library, said this event just fit in so perfectly with the Summer Discovery Theme – superheroes. “Not all superheroes are made up,” Kollar said. “It’s wonderful that they [the children] are getting to see them from their community.”
