Lemonade stand raises money for families in need By ALEXIS BARTOLOMUCCI abartolomucci@vindy.com

Children ages 3-10 years-old are learning what it takes to be a helpful member of the community by participating in the Boo Squad. The Boo Squad is a volunteer group for children to join to help out their community. The children participate in various things to teach them about differences. Children in Boo Squad host fundraisers throughout the year to raise money to help those in need. On July 15, the Boo Squad hosted their second lemonade stand of the summer at the Chic Chateau in Boardman to raise money for school supplies for two local families in need. The children sold lemonade, chips and candy to earn money. The lemonade stand was organized by Katina Stamos. “We like to pick out an environment or population that the children may not typically be

exposed to on a normal, everyday basis to teach them about volunteering and compassion and being understanding of people with differences,” said Heather Hrina Medvec. There are around 20 members in the Boo Squad and they took turns working the lemonade stand throughout the afternoon. The children enjoy serving the lemonade and collecting donations from those who purchase. Before the lemonade stand, the Boo Squad hosted an Obstacle Challenge to give the proceeds to Go Baby Go! The obstacles consisted of arm crawls, tunnel runs, wall climbs and more. The Boo Squad helps places like the Beatitude House, Making Kids Count, The Golden String and others. The children get excited when they have the opportunity to deliver the items they gathered and see the look of surprise and thankfulness the recipients have on their faces.

AFHS concert choir performs at fundraiser By ABBY SLANKER neighbors@vindy.com

Austintown Fitch High School concert choir members hosted a fundraiser at the Woodside Community Garden to raise funds for their upcoming trip to New York City where they will perform in Carnegie Hall under the direction of Eric Whitacre, Grammy-winning composer. Under t he d i r e c t ion of Austintown High School alumni and Austintown High School Choir Director Bill Klein, the students opened the concert with “100 Years of Broadway” by Mac Huff.

Following the performance, several students performed solos and duets for the audience of family and friends. The choir ended their performance by coming together again to sing “God Bless the USA” by Lee Greenwood and then invited any alumni in attendance to join them in singing “Amen.” The choir also sold food, 50/50 raffle tickets and accepted donations for their trip. The concert choir will travel to New York City April 5-8, 2018. The choir was selected by Whitacre to perform at Carnegie Hall based on their high

level of musicianship along with their high quality audition tape. Due to the high cost of the trip, the 52-member choir is planning several fundraisers in the coming months, including a Sip for a Cause Oct. 5, to help offset students’ cost. “Thank you for coming out tonight. How about these kids? Awesome, right? I just wanted

to say the support we have for this trip is absolutely incredible. We are really looking forward to New York City. And while in New York, we will be remembering our mission of honoring our veterans with a performance at the Lions Veterans’ Hospital in New York City. Our main priority is entertaining and serving those who have served,” Klein said.

Puppies at the Pooch-a-Palooza on July 19 at the Austintown library played with the children on the floor who came to visit.

Fun with furry friends By ALEXIS BARTOLOMUCCI abartolomucci@vindy.com

Austintown library hosted a Pooch-a-Palooza event on July 19 for the entire family to play with some dogs. Two puppies, Olivia and Willow, from All About the Pawz and Roxie, a therapy dog, came to the library to spend time with the guests. One room had the puppies along with a couple toys and a kissing booth for the guests to use to play with the puppies. Roxie stayed in the other room and had a meet and greet with those who attended. There were

plenty of crafts and snacks for the guests to have while they attended. There was a “mud bath,” which was a chocolate fountain with plenty of items to dip in it. There were items for guests to make snacks for their own dogs and for dogs at the shelter. People were encouraged to bring in pictures of their own dogs and fill out a paper about them to put on display at the program. There was a game to match the names of famous dogs to their pictures and a bean bag toss with cardboard cut-outs of dogs.

The dogs who visited the program were sent home with an “Official ‘Good Dog’ Certificate” that was given to them by the Austintown library and signed by librarian Lindsay Platt. The guests who attended the program had the opportunity to learn about Roxie and therapy dogs as well as about the All About the Pawz dog shelter. Every month Roxie visits the Poland library and relaxes while children read stories to her. Pooch-a-Palooza was a way for children and the dogs to release some energy while having fun and helping out.

Hawaiian luau at the park for Senior Fun Day By ALEXIS BARTOLOMUCCI abartolomucci@vindy.com

Hawaii was brought to Boardman Park on July 20 and 27 for senior citizens. The Senior Fun Day Luau has been around for 14 years is part of the Senior Fun Day that is hosted the third and fourth Thursday of each month all year long. The luau normally attracts more than 100 people between the two days. The sponsor of this luau was Woodlands Assisted Living and they provided different goodies for the guests to take home at the end of the luau. This is a partnership between Boardman Park and Ohio Living Senior Center. Seniors from the Blackburn Home, Easter Seals and many others came to celebrate.

“It’s a fun day and enjoyment for the seniors. It’s something a little different,” said recreation director Karen McCallum. There was live entertainment from John Ruman, which got the seniors up and dancing along to the music. There was a costume contest for those who dressed in their best Hawaiian outfits. There was a lunch provided and Bingo to end the afternoon. The luau is a tradition Boardman Park hosts for the seniors to enjoy something different from their daily routine. The luau incorporates the aspects of the normal Senior Fun Days, but in a different way that is related to the Hawaiian theme. The next Senior Fun Day is Aug. 17 and information about registering can be found at boardmanpark.com.
