Motorcycle run raises money for animals By ALEXIS BARTOLOMUCCI abartolomucci@vindy.com
Motorcyclists revved their engines on July 16 for the sixth annual Motorcycle Run hosted by West Side Cats at Austintown Park. This year West Side Cats partnered with Pawz 2 Adopt to raise money for their shelter dogs and cats. Both shelters are volunteerrun and no-kill. “We are basically two small shelters and we decided to try and see if we could get a bigger crowd,” said Jane Polish, President of West Side Cats. There were 60 motorcycles who participated in the run and between 100-150 people who came to support the cause. Vendors set up tents and tables in the park parking lot and sold their products. “It’s nice, laid back and helps the shelters out,” said Josh Hausley who has participated in the run for four years. Live entertainment was provided by Amanda Jones and Ron Hamrick. There was food, baked goods and baskets that were being raffled off in a 50/50. Most of the food, the gift baskets and other items that were provided were all donations from businesses and community members. West Side Cats works with Pet-

Canfield’s Boy Scout Troop 25 to host open house Canfield’s Boy Scout Troop 25 is hosting an open house on Sept. 13 from 7–9 p.m. in the basement of Canfield United Methodist Church, located at 27 S. Broad St. in Canfield. Parents and boys who meet the age requirements are welcome to come anytime during the open house to meet the Scouts and leaders and learn more about the Scouting program. Interested boys are welcomed from anywhere in the surrounding community, not only this night but any Wednesday throughout the year. Light refreshments will be served. The Boy Scouts of America provides a program for young people that builds character, instills reverence, trains them in the responsibilities of participating citizenship and develops overall personal fitness. Since 1926, Troop 25 has combined these developmental aims with experiences of outdoor camping and good clean fun. Through the outreach of Scouting, young boys are growing up to become more conscientious, responsible and productive members of society. Throughout the course of its history, Troop 25 has had more than 170 young men earn Scouting’s Highest Rank ── Eagle Scout. Boy Scouting provides a series of surmountable obstacles and steps in overcoming them t h roug h t he adva ncement method. The Boy Scout plans his advancement and progresses at his own pace as he meets each challenge. The Boy Scout
is rewarded for each achievement, which helps him gain self-confidence. The steps in the advancement system help a Boy Scout grow in self-reliance and in the ability to help others. Part of the advancement program includes merit badges. With more than 135 merit badges, a Scout can learn about sports, crafts, science, trades, business and future careers as they earn merit badges. It is an uncomplicated process that gives a Scout the confidence achieved through overcoming obstacles. Social skills improve. Self-reliance develops. Examples are set and followed. And fields of study and interest are explored beyond the limits of the school classroom. To join a Boy Scout Troop, a boy must be 11-years-old, or one who has completed the fifth grade or earned the Arrow of Light Award and is at least 10-years-old, but is not yet 18-years-old. A boy does not need to have been a Cub Scout to join a Boy Scout Troop, This past summer, the Troop participated in Summer Camp, went swimming on several occasions, hosted a Solar Eclipse event at Fair Park in Canfield and attended the D-Day Conneaut Reenactment. Troop 25’s 2017-2018 calendar includes a Put-In-Bay Campout, the Canfield UMC Corn Roast and assisting Second Harvest Food Bank in September; a hike or canoe trip in October; Junior Leader Training in November; the Troop annual Christmas Party in December; the Whis-

Canfield PONY players face Japanese National Team By ABBY SLANKER neighbors@vindy.com
Five Canfield Baseball Club PONY players, Colin Burdette, Drew Carrocce, Jake Grdic, Ryan Petro and Nate Shaw, were recently selected to the 2017 Tri-T 13U All Star Team, which played the 13U Japanese National Team in a double header during the Friendship Games on Aug. 11. The games were played at the Fields of Dreams in Boardman. The Canfield players joined other 13U players from Poland, Boardman, Mill Creek, Austintown, Badger, Springfield and Champion on the All Star Team. The team was managed by Chad Miller of Boardman and coached by Doug Widrig of Mill Creek, Anthony Patellis of Poland and Kevin Burdette of Canfield. To be chosen for the team, players participated in a try out at the Watts Center at Youngstown State University. “Each manager in the Tri-T league nominated players from their team who had an excellent season. Those players then participated in a try out at the Watts Center on YSU’s campus. The 13U team tried out for Manager Chad Miller. Those managers then conferred with their respective coaching staffs to pick
the players that they thought were most deserving to be a Tri-T All Star and represent the league in this special exhibition,” Burdette said. A 14U Tri-T All Star Team was also selected and played a double header against the 14U Japanese National Team on Aug. 11. The 14U team tried out for Manager John Pelles of Poland. According to Bob Richards, a director and executive committee member of the Tri-T Baseball/Softball League, this is the 42nd year of the Friendship Games, but the first time the games have come to Ohio. “The Friendship Games go back 42 years, but this is the first time in the games’ history that they have asked a community outside of Pittsburgh to host the games. It’s quite an honor for them to extend to Ohio and the Youngstown area,” Richards said. A pre-game ceremony took place, with a gift exchange between the Tri-T players and the Japanese National Team Players, and a special captains exchange. The Japanese and American National Anthems were also played before the games. “This is an important moment in PONY baseball to further friendships and coopera-
tion between the two countries. Japan is a large PONY presence. It is also a great opportunity to show off Ohio and the Mahoning Valley,” Richards said. In between games, a picnic was provided for all players, coaches and their parents and families. At the end of the Friendship Games, all players, coaches and their parents and families attended the Scrappers game at Eastwood Field. “Our teams going with the

Burdette said the entire experience was a great opportunity for everyone involved. “It is an absolute honor for each coach and player to play against the Japanese National Teams.
