Fun with furry friends By ALEXIS BARTOLOMUCCI abartolomucci@vindy.com
Austintown library hosted a Pooch-a-Palooza event on July 19 for the entire family to play with some dogs. Two puppies, Olivia and Willow, from All About the Pawz and Roxie, a therapy dog, came to the library to spend time with the guests. One room had the puppies along with a couple toys and a kissing booth for the guests to use to play with the puppies. Roxie stayed in the other room and had a meet and greet with those who attended. There were plenty of crafts and snacks for the guests to have while they attended. There was a “mud bath,” which was a chocolate fountain with plenty of items to dip in it. There were items for guests to make snacks for their own dogs and for dogs at the shelter.
People were encouraged to bring in pictures of their own dogs and fill out a paper about them to put on display at the program. There was a game to match the names of famous dogs to their pictures and a bean bag toss with cardboard cut-outs of dogs. The dogs who visited the program were sent home with an “Official ‘Good Dog’ Certificate” that was given to them by the Austintown library and signed by librarian Lindsay Platt. The guests who attended the program had the opportunity to learn about Roxie and therapy dogs as well as about the All About the Pawz dog shelter. Every month Roxie visits the Poland library and relaxes while children read stories to her. Pooch-a-Palooza was a way for children and the dogs to release some energy while having fun and helping out.

Librarian Missy Williams greeted people with samples of her DIY marshmallows at the start of her class at the Poland library on Aug. 24.
Poland library teaches how to make marshmallows By ZACK SHIVELY zshively@vindy.com
A class at Poland librar y learned how to make do-it-yourself homemade marshmallows on Aug. 24. Librarian Missy Williams led a class where she demonstrated how to make a batch of marshmallows using a recipe from Alton Brown on the Food Network website. She placed two wrapped-up sample marshmallows in bag on the desks for people to eat when they came in. The sample also showed the learners what the recipe would look, feel and taste like. Williams had to set up her demonstration at the library, so
she made due with a portable cooker as opposed to a stove top in order to cook ingredients together to make a sugar syrup. She also used an automatic stand mixer, which mixed the syrup with gelatin for fifteen minutes. During this process, she added a vanilla extract to add flavor. She then poured the mixture into a container. She could not show make the full recipe before us since the mix needs to sit out for 45 minutes to grow into a marshmallow slab. She had prepared another batch and removed the large slab from the container. The recipe then asks to cut the marshmallow into smaller pieces. Williams used a pizza cutter to cut it up. The pizza
cutter needed to be sprinkled with cornstarch so the cutter did not get stuck in the marshmallow. The class ate the batch of marshmallows after the presentation. Williams suggested different changes in the recipe to change the flavor. Instead of using vanilla extract, the cook can easily substitute lemon or peppermint to change the taste to those flavors. Similarly, someone could add juice instead of water while making the sugar syrup, which will give the marshmal-
lows a taste like Circus Peanuts. The creator could also roll the marshmallows in sugar to make them similar to Peeps. Williams instructed that, like candy making, the recipe is very temperature sensitive, so the cook needs to pay attention when cooking. She also said that the recipe has a trail and error element to it. Willaims teaches cooking lessons somewhat regularly at the library. The next event will be a bread making class on Nov. 20.

Jitters calmed at kindergarten orientation
There are more than 100 new Bulldogs at Poland Union Elementary School this year. The kindergarten class spent Aug. 23 getting familiar with their new school, and meeting teachers at orientation. “Wednesday’s orientation is a great way to welcome stu-
dents. In addition to getting to know their way around the building, kindergarten students get to meet their teachers,” said Mike Masucci, Principal at Poland Union Elementary. “This has proven to be a great way to minimize anxiety and has always led to a great start to
the school year.” Kindergarten students were encouraged to br ing t heir school supplies with them on orientation day, to make the “real” first day easier. “No student needs to be weighed down with 50 pounds of crayons, glue, folders,” said
Masucci. Poland Union is also home for all first- and second-graders in the district. Each grade also had orientation sessions on Aug. 23. Aug. 28 was the first day of school for Poland Loca l Schools.
Poland’s ‘Officer TJ’ to retire after 33-year career By Jordyn Grzelewski jgrzelewski@vindy.com Located on Palmyra Rd, just north of Rt. 224, the first development on the right.

If you were a fifth-grader in Poland schools sometime in the last 20 years, chances are you know township Patrolman Tom Johnson. You probably know him simply as “Officer T.J.” That’s what Johnson has encouraged kids to call him during the 20 years he’s led the D.A.R.E. (Drug Abuse Resistance Education) program, a job that put him in the schools 17 weeks

each year. Now, after 33 years with the township police department, Johnson plans to retire at the end of this year. Although plans for the D.A.R.E. program after this year have yet to be finalized, Johnson said he would consider coming back and teaching it after he retires. It’s that kind of commitment to the job that his colleagues will miss. “He fixes our computers. He fixes cars. He changes headlights,” said township Police Chief Brian Goodin, The two have worked together for much of their careers. Johnson took over the D.A.R.E. program from Goodin in 1997. Goodin noted that while working in schools is not for every police officer, Johnson is “one of those guys that fit the bill.” “This was something he always had a passion for,” he said.
“I think working with the kids two days a week kind of centers me,” said Johnson. He said that while it’s not why he does the job, he enjoys the reputation it’s given him. Current and long-graduated students recognize him out in the community. He recalled, for example, the time he was grabbing dinner and a beer at Inner Circle, and a mother and her son stopped to talk to him. The boy, who knew Johnson from D.A.R.E., wanted to know why Johnson was drinking a beer. “It changed my instruction. I tell them, ‘Look, I’m a few years older than 21. I’m allowed to have a beer. It’s a matter of if you abuse it,’” he said. Those are the kinds of topics Johnson covers in D.A.R.E., which aims to prevent substance use. Johnson said that while he covers topics such as alcohol, tobacco and marijuana, he also
talks to kids about decisionmaking. “It’s based on choices. How to pick your friends,” he said. “Peer pressure is a big lesson.” He acknowledged that the department in recent years has looked at the effectiveness of the program in terms of preventing substance use, but to him, “If one of them doesn’t partake in that aspect of drug life, it’s worth it.” The department also sees it as having another benefit: Introducing kids to police officers. “They see a cop not as a bad guy, but as somebody fun,” said Johnson. “It does open them up to a relationship with the police.” “It’s a way for the officers to be able to talk to kids about these things,” said Goodin. “It’s how they remember the police, through the D.A.R.E. program.” That aspect of the program seems to have worked. “Wherever I’m at, I hear, ‘Officer T.J.,’” Johnson said.
