Summer reading spectacular at the Poland library By amanda tonoli atonoli@vindy.com
The Poland library hosted the last event of the Summer Discovery Program season, Reading Saves the Day, on Aug. 10. Librarian Vikki Peck said she was sad to see the program come to an end but was grateful for the time had during it. “It’s fun to see all the kids coming in and coming up to the desk and you get to talk to them,” Peck said. “It’s good to see them have fun and see what they’re doing in their activities for the summer.” Peck said her favorite part of the program was the first prize students received, a book they got to choose from a bin for completing the first goal. “I love to see what they pick if they’ll show me,” Peck said. Joanie McNally came to Reading Saves the Day, happy to celebrate the end of the summer and excited for the upcoming school year. McNally said she enjoyed all of the activities offered by the library throughout the summer. “I liked it all,” McNally said. Peck said Reading Saves the Day was a fun way to wrap up
the summer reading program. “We are mostly just doing fun things and kind of just mentioning all of the different kinds of heroes,” Peck said. “Not only do we have superheroes, but we also have historical heroes, real-life heroes and even animal heroes.” In addition to games, crafts and fun, Peck said this year she Neighbors | Amanda Tonoli brought snacks for everyone to Librarian Vikki Peck set up crafts for children on Aug. 10 for Reading Saves enjoy — something a little dif- the Day, one of the last events of the Summer Discovery Program at Poland ferent from years previous. library.

instrument(s) and why did you pick the instrument(s)? Abbey: I enjoy playing the piano, xylophone, marimba, glockenspiel, auxiliary and I also do voice. I’ve played the piano for many years, but I play the rest of the instruments to challenge myself and my ability to learn. Emily: I began playing percussion instruments in my freshman year, cymbals in my sophomore year and in my senior year I am playing the bass drum. I picked percussion because of the variety of different instruments. Kylie: I have played the flute from fifth-ninth grade because I liked the sound of the instrument. In the 10th grade I began playing the trumpet because it seemed like fun. Now in my senior year I am playing the tuba because I wanted to learn something new.

back over the last Q. Looking four years in marching
band, what is your best memory of being in band/marching band and why?
Abbey: I really enjoyed last A. year’s Halloween game at Canfield. We were freezing and
wet, but we were having too much fun to care. It was raining by halftime, so the pit couldn’t play. We watched everyone play in their costumes from beneath rain gear and ponchos. Emily: I really enjoy the football games because it gives everyone a chance to demonstrate their amazing talents. Kylie: My favorite memory was in my sophomore year and marching in the Main Street Parade at the Magic Kingdom on New Year’s Eve 2013. is music important to Q. Why you? Abbey: Music can speak to A. people in a way that even their natural language can even
try. It can excite and soothe. I enjoyed my part in last year’s “Avengers Medley,” but in my favorite pieces from this year, I perform a solo in both “James Bond” and “Jurassic Park” on the Glockenspiel. Emily: Music is very important to me, not only as a hobby, but also as a current career. I really liked “Carry On My Wayward Son,” which we played my freshman year because it was a great song. Kylie: Music is important to me because I enjoy learning new things. “All of the Lights” was my favorite piece to per-
form because it was fun.

Abbey: Mr. Olesko (Band Director) was my choir director in my sophomore year, and he learned that I could play the piano, so he invited me to marching band. It was then that I learned to play the xylophone. Emily: I would tell the fifthgraders and anyone interested in joining the marching band that the number 1 reason to join the band is because it’s an incredible experience, and it is such an awesome opportunity to make new friends. Kylie: You meet so many people and make some wonderful friends.

GARDEN PARTY Continued from Page 6 raiser for the year. ...Friends of Fellows Riverside Gardens is a non-profit that helps promote, preserve and maintain the gardens.” Hagman continued that the money raised by the Summer Garden Party goes to underwriting programs throughout the year. Keith Kaiser, Fellows Riverside Gardens horticulture director, said he appreciated not only the perfect weather for the park’s big night, but also all of the people
who showed up for the festivities. “It’s so important to have such a diverse group of people, ages too,” Kaiser said. “They are all here to enjoy a public garden that is free to everybody.” The first Summer Garden Party was in 1991 which commemorated the centennial of the MetroParks. That specific Garden Party helped fund the activities for that year and has been continued by Friends of Fellows Riverside Gardens ever since. This year, Kaiser said, with the help of supporters, sponsors and the Friends of Fellows Riverside Gardens group they have al-
ready surpassed their fundraising goals, giving them more for underwriting free programs and education. “The Friends group has helped made everything we do possible. ...they help make the extras possible,” Kaiser said. Matthew Cheng, a five-year attendee of the Summer Garden Party, said he appreciated the atmosphere of the gardens. “It’s always nice to be here,” Cheng said. Hagman said his excitement continued for plans for the following year, the 25th “silver” year, saying it was going to be something really special.
