Cub Scouting now open to boys and girls in The Valley Loca l Cub Scouting prog r a m s h av e r e c ent l y a nnounced that they are now open to both boys and girls.

Cub Scouting is a year-round family program designed for girls and boys who are in kindergarten through fifth grade.

Cub Scouting is the largest of the Boy Scouts of America’s three traditional membership programs with approximately 1.7 million boys and their families involved throughout the United States.

Since announcing the BSA’s historic decision to welcome girls into Scouting earlier this year, more than 3,000 girls across the nation have already enrolled in the BSA’s Early Adopter Program and are participating in Cub Scouts ahead of the full launch this fall.

The beginning of the school year is the traditional time for girls and boys and their families to join Cub Scouts, but they can join at any time. During the month of September, local Cub Scout Packs in Mahoning County are hosting recruitment nights called School Nights to give girls, boys and their families an opportuni-

ty to experience a little of the fun and adventure that the Cub Scouts experience all year long.

MVREIA meeting to take place on Sept. 10 The Mahoning Valley Real Estate Investors Association will meet on Sept. 10 from 5:30-8:30 p.m. at Boardman Park’s Lariccia Family Community Center, located at 375 Canfield Poland Road, for its monthly meeting.

Austintown kicks off first week of school

Austintown Local School’s began their first day of classes on Aug. 28.

K i nderga r t ners enter i ng Austintown Elementary School had a staggered start for the first three days, according to AES Principal Tim Kelty.

Kelty said that the first week at school for all students is focused on assessments and character development.

For the 340 kindergartners starting school for the first time, Kelty said the staggered start is a way to be sure all classrooms are balanced.

During the staggered start groups of students are brought to school in chunks, where they

work with teachers and other staff to do academic and emotional assessment that effects their classroom placement.

“That’s how we authentically balance the classrooms.

We take all that information, all that data, and we place them,” Kelty said.

On Aug. 31, kindergartners were officially placed in their classes and the lists were posted in color coded lists on the front door.

“We are always excited to see the kids that arrive,” Kelty said.

A long w ith kindergarten, Kelty said that al grade levels will be doing similar state mandated assessments for their first week back.

According to Kelty, the first week becomes a balance between state assessments and the character development and social emotional assessments done by the school to make the student successful.

“We always have high expectations here at AES,” Kelty said.

“So we can begin that baseline of where they are at so we can help that student throughout the school year.”

He said that the goal is to complete this work, while helping students and teachers get into their routines.

where the students can be comfortable and confident,” Kelty said. “If they aren’t they can’t be successful.”

Kelty emphasized that none of this would be possible with a great staff who is dedicated to the students.

“It’s a great responsibility and we embrace that,” Kelty said.

This is Kelty’s first year as principal of AES since his promotion, though he has a life time of experience in Austintown.

“I am very familiar with the community, the expectations and the traditions,” Kelty said.

“Its just something that I have always embraced. There’s never a day that I don’t look forward to coming here.”

Kelty worked as Woodside Elementary before it closed, and is a graduate of Austintown Fitch High School.

“I just have always had that drive in me to serve Austintown and to give back what they gave me. It’s been a great relationship,” he said.

There are about 11,000 attending AES this school year, making it one of the largest elementary schools in the state.

“We are extremely proud of what we do here at the K2 building,” Kelty said. “I always reassure parents that they are doing the right thing and made the right choice bringing there kids here because it really is a great school.”

His first call came for the noon changing of the guard, before the biggest crowd of the day.

People often ask Cardamon how he got to be a tomb guard.

He explained that the army selects soldiers who fit a defined profile - certain height, military bearing, attitude and more. Only a fraction of those who fit, are selected. The all-volunteer army today has a difficult time finding soldiers to serve in the Old Guard, although it is inclusive in that women do serve as Sentinels.

One of his last duties as a Sentinel was at the interment of the Unknown Soldier from World War II and the Korean War. Cardamon was instrumental

in forming The Society of the Honor Guard - Tomb of the Unknown Soldier, and has served as its president.

His presentation gave insights into what the duties of a Sentinel entailed and his experiences with the Old Guard. He emphasized the importance of the duty and how honored and rewarding it was to serve as a Sentinel at the Tomb.

The next meeting of the MSVCMOAA will be on Sept. 27 at the Community Activities Center of the Youngstown Air Reserve Station, starting at 6 p.m. The guest speaker will be Janet Moy of SCORE. Jim Cardamon, an Army Veteran and former Sentinel at the Tomb of the Unknowns at Arlington National Cemetery, was the guest speaker at the monthly luncheon meeting of the Mahoning and Shenango Valleys Chapter of the Military Officers Association (MSVC-MOAA).

Cardamon was drafted into the Army in 1956 and was honorably discharged in 1958. A friend who attended the Citadel taught him close order drill using a broom for a rifle. With this advantage, he was selected as squad leader during infantry Basic and Advanced Individual Training. After Basic Training and Advanced Individual Training he was assigned to the 3rd U.S. Infantry, “the Old Guard” at Fort Myer, Va. He was selected to join the honor guard company whose three platoons include the Honor Guard, casket bearers or firing party and drill team. He chose the drill team. He ultimately was selected to become a Sentinel at the Tomb of the Unknowns, sometimes call be “Tomb Guard of the Unknown Soldier.”

After practicing constantly with some of his friends who were tomb guards, he was given the opportunity. While some of those selected never made it to the tomb, Cardamon made it after just a couple weeks. Guards were usually first put out early or late in the day when there

Library helps children get ready for kindergarten

The Austintown library hosted an event on Aug. 8 to prepare incoming kindergartners for the start of school.

The event, called Get Ready for Kindergarten!, was focused on helping children going into school to master the skills they need to succeed in their first year, according to librarian Nikki Puhalla.

“I think libraries now are focusing on kindergarten readiness skills for kids, so there’s a demand for that,” Puhalla said.

This is the first year the library offered the program, which was developed by Puhalla and another librarian, Lindsay Cramer.

During the event, children start out reading a story and singing a song with librarians.

This helps children develop listening and attention skills, as well as an ability to follow instructions according to Puhalla.

“There’s so many things that they need to learn before they get into kindergarten,” she said.

After the initial song and story, children and their parents are then encouraged to walk through the stations set up and go through the different activities themselves.

gether on these skills,” Puhalla said.

The stations included a variety of activities working on skills children need to know before entering school.

This included math skills, by creating shapes with play dough, fine motor skills by writing their names and working on ties and buckles and memorizing their home addresses and phone numbers.

The librarians also set up a feelings station where children and their parents can talk about how a child works through their different emotions, to prepare them totally for entering school.

“We try to not overwhelm the

child and parents so this is more of a fun activity,” Puhalla said.

She said that the rise in kindergarten readiness programs in libraries may be a result of a lot of children no longer attending preschool.

“I think this is a good opportunity for them to pick up on some of these skills that they would normally get in Pre K,” she said.

The program ran twice in August, and will likely continue in upcoming years according to Puhalla.

Celebrating heritage at Austintown Park

The Austintown Farmers market hosted its first ever Heritage Day on Aug. 6 at Austintown Park.

The market partnered with the Ladies Ancient Order of Hibernians, an Irish Catholic womens group, to put on the event.

“Our motto is friendship uni-

ty and Christian charity,” said Shannon Lehn, who is a member of LAOH and organizes the farmers market. “We want to not only preserve our Irish history and be proud of it but also give back to the community.”

Lehn said that her goal with putting on the event is to promote the diversity in the area and celebrate their heritage.

“We just want to be able to promote who we are because we are proud of who we are,” Lehn said.

During the market this week the LAOH continued the school supplies drive that began the week before to help support Austintown public schools.

Everyone who donated was entered into a raffle to win a

gift bag, which was given away through a raffle on Face book live according to Lehn.

The market was able to collect three large boxes of supplies to be donated according to Lehn.

For Celebrate Heritage Day the market also had a vendor selling kolache, a Mexican food truck and an Irish step dancer performance.

“I really wanted to celebrate all heritages,” Lehn said, emphasizing her desire for more groups to get involved in next years event.

The Austintown Farmers Market is hosted Mondays 5-8 p.m. in Austintown Park.

Local dance studio wins big at national championships Epic Dance Complex of Canfield competed at the Revolution National Talent Competition June 24-28 in Pensacola, Fla. EPIC brought home two prestigious Victory Cups, a Premier Cup and a national title.

In the age 8 and younger category, the routine titled “Blue” placed first in their category, and first place overall high score. The routine titled “Hero” placed first overall high score in the national finals “Battle of the Champions.”

EPIC secured the win in the Mini Division by re-competing “Blue” in the “Battle of the Champions,” earned a Revolutionary Award (near perfect score), first place

overall high score and the Victory Cup trophy. The Victory Cup champion represents the highest scoring group of the entire competition. This routine was choreographed by Tommy Porter of Canfield.

In the age 12 and older category, the production routine titled “Oh My Gaga” placed first in their category, and first place overall high score. They earned a spot in the “Battle of the Champions” National Finals, and brought home the age 12 and older Grand Line Victory Cup. This routine was choreographed

by Porter and JoEllen Mrofchak of Poland.

In the age 15-19 category, the small group titled “P.Y.T” won second overall, and earned a spot to re-compete in Revolution’s “Battle of the Champions.”

The group of seven girls from EPIC came from behind to win first place overall high score, and brought home the Premier Cup. There is only one Premier Cup given, and it represents the highest scoring intermediate routine at the National Finals. This routine was choreographed by Mrofchak.

Austintown hosts annual band camp

Austintown Fitch High School marching band hosted its annual band camp July 30 through Aug. 3. The camp ran from 8 a.m. until 3 p.m. each day with an hour break for lunch.

Wes O’Connor, the director of the Austintown Marching Band, said that the goal of camp is to learn the new shows for the upcoming season.

“We try to get as much as we can learned,” O’Connor said.

The band has two new shows each year, written by the Senior Drum Major. This year that was Nick Mattiussi, a trumpet player, who said he was inspired to run for drum major by those who previously had the position.

“The way they handled leadership and conducted themselves in front of the band made me think that was really cool and something I wanted to do,” Mattiussi said.

This year, the band is doing a tribute to World War One, since 2018 is the 100th year anniversary of the end of the war.

“Whenever we get the chance we always try to do something that honors our heros,” O’Connor said.

Mattiussi created two shows to accompany the theme.

For the first show, Mattiussi created a show that would have the members of the band spell out the letters in WWI on the field.

This also fits the style of the band, O’Connor said, since Austintown is the last military band in the Ohio.

The difference, according to O’Connor, is the music the band plays and that they march a larger step.

“We still stick to our basic fundamentals of tradition,” O’Connor said. “You’re talking about a 92 year history here.”

He added that all of Fitch’s half time shows end by playing “Stars and Stripes Forever.”

“Our monicker is ‘tradition with innovation,’ so we try different methods of getting there,” O’Connor said.

O’Connor is assisted in running the camp by Assistant Director Jeremy McClaine and volunteers from the Band Parents Association.

band parents are an essential part to camp running smoothly and efficiently. The Band Parents Association completed some of the more auxiliary functions during the camp, including getting water and organizing paper work from the band members.

“We have dedicated parents,” O’Connor said. “Our parents they put in a lot of time.”

After camp each day, weather permitting, O’Connor said that they also have a competition between band members. On Tuesday, the band had a march off, where each member had to march perfectly or was eliminated. The last member standing was given a pair of golden band shoes.

O’Connor said this is a great way to grow camaraderie in the band, especially for incoming freshman.

“For many kids this is their first experience in high school,” O’Connor said.

He said that the band camp is a good opportunity for freshman to become more acquainted with the school and meet upperclassmen.

“When they show up on their first day of school they have 140 friends,” O’Connor said.

After band camp, members of the marching band will practice throughout the end of August from 9 a.m. tuntil 12 p.m.

These are review practices to perfect the shows they learned at band camp before the start of the season.

“In band, every person is a

starter,” O’Connor said.

Carly Donofrio of Canfield became the bride of David Brown, also of Canfield, during a ceremony at 2 p.m. Oct. 21, 2017, at St. Michael Catholic Church.

The bride is a daughter of Janet and Gene Donofrio of Canfield, and the groom is a son of Mary and Dave Brown, also of Canfield.

The Rev. Terry Hazel officiated, and a reception followed at St. Mary Assumption Social Center in Youngstown.

The couple honeymooned in Aruba and are living in Cleveland.

The bride’s sisters, Lindsay Donofrio and Jenna Buck, were maid and matron of honor, respectively, and bridesmaids were Elizabeth and Rebecca Brown, the groom’s sisters, and Melanie Lozier, Justine Voto and Phoebe Mason.

Daniel Brown, the groom’s brother served as best man, and groomsmen were Alex Budinsky and Aaron Franks, the bride’s cousins; Kyle Brown, the groom’s cousin; Dan DeLuca; Nick Cayton; and Mike Vitullo.

Mrs. Brown earned bachelor’s and master’s degrees in communication sciences and disorders from Bowling Green State University. She is a speechlanguage pathologist at Cleveland Clinic Rehabilitation Hospital in Beachwood.

Her husband holds a bachelor’s degree from BGSU and is employed in Cleveland.

Mr. and Mrs. Ron Wetzel of Boardman celebrated their golden wedding anniversary June 24 during a Mass and renewal of vows at Holy Family Church in Poland followed by a brunch at the Holiday Inn in Boardman hosted by the couple’s daughters.

The couple also celebrated the occasion on a trip to Aruba and during a vacation trip to Myrtle Beach, S.C., with their family.

The Wetzels are the parents of Lawni Lynn (Todd) Ross of Middlefield and Rochel Lee (Nate) Wolfe of Portsmouth.

Four grandchildren complete their family.

The former Ilona Kuharik and Mr. Wetzel were married June 22, 1968, at St. Ann Church in Farrell, Pa. She retired in 1999 from Eye Care Steel in Lordstown before retiring in Associates in Youngstown where she 2006.

The couple are members of Holy Famworked as a medical assistant.

Mr. Wetzel was a salesman for Taylor ily Church, the USGA and the YMCA.

James Koontz of Youngstown is announcing the engagement and forthcoming marriage of his daughter, Terra Koontz, to Charles Fox, both of Canfield. The bride-to-be also is a daughter of the late Mara Koontz.

The prospective groom is a son of Julie Fox of Hubbard.

The exchanging of vows will take place at 2 p.m. Sept. 15 at St. Christine Church in Youngstown. A reception that evening will honor the couple at The Maronite Center in Youngstown.

Invitations have been extended for both events.

The bride-elect graduated from Youngstown State University with a bachelor’s degree in nursing. She is a registered nurse in the cardiovacular intensive care unit at St. Elizabeth Youngstown Hospital.

Mr. Fox is a graduate of Kent State

University with a bachelor’s degree in nursing. He is a registered nurse in the cardiovascular lab at St. Elizabeth Youngstown Hospital.

Mr. and Mrs. Frank Kreps of Boardman were honored July 14 at a dinner party on the occasion of their 70th wedding anniversary.

The event took place at the home of the couple’s son, Ken (Kim) Kreps in Boardman and also was hosted by their other children and their spouses, Ted and Marie Kreps of New Springfield, Holly and Dwight Wilson of Atlanta and Marcia and John Botch of Boardman.

Ten grandchildren and 10 greatgrandchildren complete their family.

Mr. Kreps and the former Berry Porter were married July 16, 1948, at Trinity Methodist Church in Youngstown.

She was a homemaker and also assisted with her husband’s businesses as a bookkeeper and retired in 1991.

Mr. Kreps was the owner of Frank Kreps Plastering and Kreps Dr ywall. He also was one of the original owners of the Holiday Bowl. He also

retired in 1991.

Mr. and Mrs. Kreps attend Greenford Christian Church and belong to Salem Hills Golf Club. They are also avid bridge players.
