Cub Scouting now open to area boys and girls Loca l Cub Scout ing prog r a m s h av e r e c ent l y a nnounced that they are now open to both boys and girls.

Cub Scouting is a year-round family program designed for girls and boys who are in kindergarten through fifth grade.

Cub Scouting is the largest of the Boy Scouts of America’s three traditional membership programs with approximately 1.7 million boys and their families involved throughout the United States.

Since announcing the BSA’s historic decision to welcome girls into Scouting earlier this year, more than 3,000 girls across the nation have already enrolled in the BSA’s Early Adopter Program and are participating in Cub Scouts ahead of the full launch this fall.

The beginning of the school year is the traditional time for girls and boys and their families to join Cub Scouts, but they can join at any time.

During the month of September, local Cub Scout Packs in Mahoning County are hosting recruitment nights called School Nights to give girls, boys and their families an opportunity to experience a little

of the fun and adventure that the Cub Scouts experience all year long.

Canfield cheerleaders show off stunts at fair

The Canfield High School cheerleading squad performed at the Canfield Fair on Aug. 29.

The fair hosted cheerleading demonstrations for 17 schools including Canfield, Austintown, Poland and Struthers.

“They were flawless today, we could not have been happier,” said Ashley Gibbs, the cheerleading Head Coach at Canfield.

Gibbs said that the team

worked for more than 112 hours during the summer to prepare for the upcoming season.

“That prepares us for all of our season games as well as performances,” Gibbs said.

The team conditions throughout the summer, according to Gibbs, who said that they attend camps and work together to perfect cheers and routines.

She said that during August it kicks into full gear and the team practices Monday through Friday from 8 a.m. until 12 p.m.

The whole Canfield Cheerleading Squad performed together at the Canfield Fair Cheerleading Demonstrations on Aug. 29.

As a result of this hard work, the team performed flawlessly during the fair according to Gibbs.

She said that the performance differs from a half time show because the team performed as a whole. They also performed stunts and other jumps they usually would not do during a typical performance.

The team is split into three groups, varsity, junior varsity and freshmen, with 45 cheerleaders total.

“It’s good to get the girls to learn time management and be prepared for practices to learn to work together with one another,” Gibbs said.

During the school year the team will perform at football games, pep rallies and a community tailgate.

“Our whole theme this year was ‘commit, then conquer,’ and that can only happen if we are working as a team and we are performing as one unit,” Gibbs said.

Jim Cardamon, an Army Veteran and former Sentinel at the Tomb of the Unknowns at Arlington National Cemetery, was the guest speaker at the monthly luncheon meeting of the Mahoning and Shenango Valleys Chapter of the Military Officers Association (MSVC-MOAA).

Cardamon was drafted into the Army in 1956 and was honorably discharged in 1958. A friend who attended the Citadel taught him close order drill using a broom for a rifle. With this advantage, he was selected as squad leader during infantry Basic and Advanced Individual Training. After Basic Training and Advanced Individual Training he was assigned to the 3rd U.S. Infantry, “the Old Guard” at Fort Myer, Va. He was selected to join the honor guard company whose three platoons include the Honor Guard, casket bearers or firing party and drill team. He chose the drill team. He ultimately was selected to become a Sentinel at the Tomb of the Unknowns, sometimes call be “Tomb Guard of the Unknown Soldier.”

After practicing constantly with some of his friends who were tomb guards, he was given the opportunity. While some of those selected never made it to the tomb, Cardamon made it after just a couple weeks. Guards were usually first put out early or late in the day when there

were few spectators at the tomb.

His first call came for the noon changing of the guard, before the biggest crowd of the day.

People often ask Cardamon how he got to be a tomb guard.

He explained that the army selects soldiers who fit a defined profile - certain height, military bearing, attitude and more. Only a fraction of those who fit, are selected. The all-volunteer army today has a difficult time finding soldiers to serve in the Old Guard, although it is inclusive in that women do serve as Sentinels.

One of his last duties as a Sentinel was at the interment of the Unknown Soldier from World War II and the Korean War. Cardamon was instrumental

in forming The Society of the Honor Guard - Tomb of the Unknown Soldier, and has served as its president.

His presentation gave insights into what the duties of a Sentinel entailed and his experiences with the Old Guard. He emphasized the importance of the duty and how honored and rewarding it was to serve as a Sentinel at the Tomb.

The next meeting of the MSVCMOAA will be on Sept. 27 at the Community Activities Center of the Youngstown Air Reserve Station, starting at 6 p.m. The guest speaker will be Janet Moy of SCORE. Bells to ring in celebration of signing of The Constitution The Daughters of the American Revolution will celebrate the beginning of Constitution Week on Sept.

17 by participating in the nation-wide Bells Across America event at 4 p.m.

The Mahoning Chapter of the Daugh-

ters of the American Revolution are asking schools, churches and individuals throughout The Valley to celebrate the signing of The Constitution by ringing bells at 4 p.m. on Sept. 17, the same date and time it was signed in 1787. There will be a gathering to read the Preamble and ring individual bells at Road of Remembrance Rock, located on Market Street and Newport Drive in Boardman, at 3:30 p.m. on Sept. 17. Mill Creek Park hosted its monthly Sprout Club event on Aug. 16 at Fellows Riverside Garden.

The event is offered for children who are 3-5 years-old.

“It’s a fun way to introduce young kids to the different aspects of nature,” said Cody Stall, who ran the Aug. 16 event.

Stall said she was filling in for Lynn Zocolo who usually runs the program.

During each event, children are introduced to a specific aspect of nature, and go more in depth into the topics.

The children read a related book with the MetroParks employee, do an activity and enjoy a snack.

This month, the theme of the event was dinosaurs.

The children read “Dinosaurs Dance” along with Stall, dancing along to the instructions in the book.

After reading, parks employees passed out play dough and told children to create “fossils” by pressing plastic dinosaurs into the play dough and seeing what shapes it made.

The children t hen drew the shapes they made on the board.

Stall explained to everyone that their “fossils” were different because all of the dinosaurs were different.

Stall, who has a degree in geology, said she was particularly qualified to teach this course, which is why she was asked to substitute.

“I’m going to teach you all the cool things I know,” she said to the group.

She explained the differences between herbivores and carnivores, and how scientists can tell what type a dinosaur is by their teeth, the number of toes they have and how many legs they use to walk.

She also explained that humans were neither of those things, but were actually both, which is called an omnivore.

After the lesson, children were then given paper cut-outs of dinosaur parts. They glued them together and colored their own dinosaurs to take home with them after the event.

The next Sprout Club event will take place on Sept. 20.

The Canfield High School soccer program hosted its semi-annual alumni game at Dove Field on Sept. 1.

Approximately 40 CHS boys and girls soccer team alumni participated in the event, with all proceeds donated to the Michael Thomas Memorial Scholarship fund.

“Donations made will benefit the Michael Thomas Memorial Scholarship. Dr. and Mrs. Thomas set up a scholarship in Michael’s name to benefit a boy and girl soccer player. Michael was a graduate of the class of 2012 - a son, a brother, a teammate and a mentor to many. He was not only a graduate of Canfield, but also a member of the staff for both the boys and girls teams. He was part of the Canfield soccer family and we are honored to remember him,” said Shara Simone, alumni game chairperson.

Simone said she and girls soccer Head Coach Phil Simone comprised the teams to make

them as even as possible.

“Phil and I went through all our participants and decided which team to put them on based on their positions when they played for Canfield. That was our strategy to make the teams as even as possible, and who better to do that than Phil, who has been a coach at Canfield for 25 years,” Simone said.

Simone said she appreciated everyone who played in the game and everyone who donated to the scholarship fund.

“I so appreciate everyone who came to play today and those who traveled here to play. The oldest alumni we have here today graduated in 1989 and traveled from Atlanta. We also appreciate all those who donated money to the scholarship fund but couldn’t be here today to play in the game,” Simone said.

Michael Thomas’ parents, Janice and Dr. John Thomas, were on hand to watch the game and greet the players.

“We appreciate everything everyone has done. We want to keep Mike’s memory alive by

awarding a scholarship to both a boy player and a girl player. Soccer was Mike’s life since he was 5-years-old. This means so much to us,” said Janice Thomas.

After playing a full game of two 40-minute halves, refereed by Phil Simone, the red team bested the gray team by a score of 3-2.

These positions are responsible for providing safety and security for Westminster College, student staff, visitors and property, maintaining peace and order, controlling and preventing crime and upholding College standards of conduct. Required to obtain/retain First Aid/CPR/AED certification and a basic knowledge of various computer programs. Act 120 and/or Act 235 certification is preferred although not needed at this time. Carly Donofrio of Canfield became the bride of David Brown, also of Canfield, during a ceremony at 2 p.m. Oct. 21, 2017, at St. Michael Catholic Church.

The bride is a daughter of Janet and Gene Donofrio of Canfield, and the groom is a son of Mary and Dave Brown, also of Canfield.

The Rev. Terry Hazel officiated, and a reception followed at St. Mary Assumption Social Center in Youngstown.

The couple honeymooned in Aruba and are living in Cleveland.

The bride’s sisters, Lindsay Donofrio and Jenna Buck, were maid and matron of honor, respectively, and bridesmaids were Elizabeth and Rebecca Brown, the groom’s sisters, and Melanie Lozier, Justine Voto and Phoebe Mason.

Daniel Brown, the groom’s brother served as best man, and groomsmen were Alex Budinsky and Aaron Franks, the bride’s cousins; Kyle Brown, the groom’s cousin; Dan DeLuca; Nick Cayton; and Mike Vitullo.

Mrs. Brown earned bachelor’s and master’s degrees in communication sciences and disorders from Bowling Green State University. She is a speechlanguage pathologist at Cleveland Clinic Rehabilitation Hospital in Beachwood.

Her husband holds a bachelor’s degree from BGSU and is employed in Cleveland.

Mr. and Mrs. Ron Wetzel of Boardman celebrated their golden wedding anniversary June 24 during a Mass and renewal of vows at Holy Family Church in Poland followed by a brunch at the Holiday Inn in Boardman hosted by the couple’s daughters.

The couple also celebrated the occasion on a trip to Aruba and during a vacation trip to Myrtle Beach, S.C., with their family.

The Wetzels are the parents of Lawni Lynn (Todd) Ross of Middlefield and Rochel Lee (Nate) Wolfe of Portsmouth.

Four grandchildren complete their family.

The former Ilona Kuharik and Mr. Wetzel were married June 22, 1968, at St. Ann Church in Farrell, Pa. She retired in 1999 from Eye Care Steel in Lordstown before retiring in Associates in Youngstown where she 2006.

The couple are members of Holy Famworked as a medical assistant.

Mr. Wetzel was a salesman for Taylor ily Church, the USGA and the YMCA.

James Koontz of Youngstown is announcing the engagement and forthcoming marriage of his daughter, Terra Koontz, to Charles Fox, both of Canfield. The bride-to-be also is a daughter of the late Mara Koontz.

The prospective groom is a son of Julie Fox of Hubbard.

The exchanging of vows will take place at 2 p.m. Sept. 15 at St. Christine Church in Youngstown. A reception that evening will honor the couple at The Maronite Center in Youngstown.

Invitations have been extended for both events.

The bride-elect graduated from Youngstown State University with a bachelor’s degree in nursing. She is a registered nurse in the cardiovacular intensive care unit at St. Elizabeth Youngstown Hospital.

Mr. Fox is a graduate of Kent State

University with a bachelor’s degree in nursing. He is a registered nurse in the cardiovascular lab at St. Elizabeth Youngstown Hospital.

Mr. and Mrs. Frank Kreps of Boardman were honored July 14 at a dinner party on the occasion of their 70th wedding anniversary.

The event took place at the home of the couple’s son, Ken (Kim) Kreps in Boardman and also was hosted by their other children and their spouses, Ted and Marie Kreps of New Springfield, Holly and Dwight Wilson of Atlanta and Marcia and John Botch of Boardman.

Ten grandchildren and 10 greatgrandchildren complete their family.

Mr. Kreps and the former Berry Porter were married July 16, 1948, at Trinity Methodist Church in Youngstown.

She was a homemaker and also assisted with her husband’s businesses as a bookkeeper and retired in 1991.

Mr. Kreps was the owner of Frank Kreps Plastering and Kreps Dr ywall. He also was one of the original owners of the Holiday Bowl. He also

retired in 1991.

Mr. and Mrs. Kreps attend Greenford Christian Church and belong to Salem Hills Golf Club. They are also avid bridge players.
