Library crafters create baskets from paper by ZACK SHIVELY zshively@vindy.com
The Austintown library had a paper crafting event for adults on Aug. 25 in which participants made baskets out of paper. Librarian Lindsay Platt coordinated the event with the library. She gave the group the materials needed, including scissors, brads, paper, decorations and tape. They worked on a basket for apples made from construction paper with decorations with apples on them. Platt also gave each person a recipe for apple cinnamon potpourri to tape on the basket. Each person from the small group crafted at a different skill level than the others. Some looked at the example given and knew exactly what to do, while others examined the example to see how certain things were done. Some finished within 20
minutes and would have been done faster had they not had to wait a turn with some materials, such as the hole punch. While some took a bit longer, no one needed the full hour to finish their projects. The event had as much of a social aspect to it as it had an art aspect. Some group members had been at other events and knew each other. They talked about families, complained about construction throughout downtown, and spoke positively about the Zac Brown Band playing in the area. The library hosts a paper crafting event on the last Friday of every month. The next event will be on Sept. 29 at 11 a.m. Platt showed the group some previews for the events in October and November, which are a Halloween card and a Thanksgiving banner, respectively.

Night out provides fun for family By ALEXIS BARTOLOMUCCI abartolomucci@vindy.com
Community members gathered at Austintown Township Park on Aug. 1 to celebrate the fifth annual Austintown Night Out. What began as the Wickliffe Block Watch party soon became the Austintow n Night Out. Shawne Wilfong, founder of Austintown Night Out, originally got the idea from Officer Jeff Toth after he attended a Night Out in Youngstown. The Block Watch party was hosted to bring in the firemen, police and other safety service workers together and celebrate the good they do for the community. “Anything I need from the fire department and police department, they’re always willing to do as much as they can,” said Wilfong. Austintown Night Out brings in a couple thousand people each year to enjoy free games, tours of service vehicles and several vendors. There was a
Home Depot tent and Green Team table set up for children to build crafts, ATA Martial Arts had a table for information and demonstrations and the 20/9 Amateur Radio Club provided music along with the live entertainment that began in the evening. Austintown Skate Zone attended and brought the Minions for the families to visit. Castle On A Cloud brought in Belle and Captain America to walk around and meet the guests. Admission was free, but donations were accepted to help with some of the costs for this year and next year’s Night Out. Wilfong thanks Todd Shaffer and the employees of Austintown Park for helping out with what is needed and for providing a place for the event to be hosted. There is an Austintown Night Out Facebook page where Wilfong posts updates throughout the year about Austintown Night Neighbors | Alexis Bartolomucci Out and about the fundraisers Minions came to Austintown Night Out on Aug. 1 at Austintown Park and that are hosted each year. walked around for children to meet and take pictures with.

Children in the Mahoning Valley had the opportunity to enjoy a breakfast with author Rosemary Wells on July 28 at Stambaugh Auditorium. Invitations were sent out to children who had participated and completed the Summer Discovery program with the Public Library of Youngstown and Mahoning County. The Summer Discovery program is hosted by PLYMC each summer to encourage children to read and participate in different events and programs the libraries host. It serves as the trademark event to bring Summer Discovery to an end. “I’m thrilled to be here, this is a beautiful city,” said Wells, aut hor of t he best-sel l i ng books, “Max and Ruby.” The morning began w ith more than 500 people enjoying a breakfast and spending time with their friends and families. When everyone finished eating, Wells took the stage and spoke to the children about the importance of reading and libraries. Wells has participated in various educational programs like this around the world. She enjoys traveling and sharing her love of reading with those who also love to read. “We are celebrating these
