Christmas comes early at Greenbriar By ALEXIS BARTOLOMUCCI abartolomucci@vindy.com
Christmas in July came to Greenbriar Health Center on July 25 for the first time for residents and community. Eight vendors set up tables to sell their products. There were vendors selling jewelry, essential oils, bags and other homemade crafts. Young Living Essentia l Oils, Forever Yours Handmade Creations, All Things Wooden and many more supplied their products for customers to purchase. The Christmas in July event was set up to bring the community and the residents of Greenbriar together. There were refreshments served for the guests to enjoy while they
shopped. The space was decorated with Christmas items that had a summer theme to them. There were Christmas trees decorated with suns, flamingos and other summery objects. Guests had the opportunity to come in during the two hour period and shop for a variety of items. Products were available to buy as-is, while some offered to customize an item that someone was going to purchase. Greenbriar and the Commons hosts different events to invite the community into the health care center. The faculty at Greenbriar tries to incorporate community activities to ensure their residents are still active in things that are going on outside the building.

Boardman librarian Karen Saunders read “Minerva Louise at the Fair” to the children at Family Story Time at the library on Aug. 30.
Library combines fun, literacy and the fair by ZACK SHIVELY zshively@vindy.com
The Boardman library hosted a Family Story Time event to promote literacy on Aug. 30. Librarian Karen Saunders led the event, which took place in the large meeting room of the library. The event had a “Fair and Farm Fun“ theme to coincide with the Canfield Fair, which began on the same day. The event’s main focus is literacy, according to Saunders. She passed out a sheet with an overview of the things they would
be doing today along with some fun learning exercises for the parents to do with their children. The sheet also included an important fact: “Research shows a clear link between a child’s vocabulary and the time the parents spend talking to the child.“ She opened the event with an exercise to get the children thinking and moving where they moved and clapped their hands at differing tempos as directed by Saunders. Then, she read “Minerva Louise at the Fair“ by Janet Morgan Stoeke
and later read “Down on the Farm“ by Merrily Kutner. In between the two books, the children played instruments and participated in an identification game. Saunders handed out instruments, such as cymbals and shakers and the children played along with “Old MacDonald Had a Farm.“ The group’s game asked them to place a picture of an animal with a magnet on the back to a magnetic board as the animal’s name came up in the song “On the Way to Grandpa’s Farm.“ The children created paper
beanbags with the help of their parents and Saunders at the end of the event. Saunders gave the children crayons, paper, scissors and tape to make the beanbags. The paper had farm animals that the children colored. Each part of the event helped the children learn while also entertaining them. The books raise the children’s literacy skills, the songs improved the their identification and rhythmic abilities and the craft exercise worked their creativity and motor skills.
The Mahoning and Shenango Valleys Chapter of the Military Officers Association of America (MSVC-MOAA) will host the 2017 Ohio Council of Chapters Convention at the Youngstown Air Reserve Station in Vienna on Sept. 22-23. For reservations and more information, contact Janet Oglesby, 330568-4456, or go to the chapter web site at www.msvc-moaa.org.
Library friends to meet There will be a Friends of the Boardman Library meeting and presentation on Sept. 11 at 10 a.m. at the Boardman library. The group will have a presentation followed by a meeting on the “Idora Park Experience” with Jim Amey. This event is for adults.
