The best library Lego selection By amanda tonoli atonoli@vindy.com

On Aug. 21, the Austintown library hosted Lego My Library, a program dedicated to challenging children to building a themed creation for the duration of an hour. Librarian Jen Kuczek brought in books to help with designs and storylines for Lego creations. Kuczek said this program has proven to be quite successful, drawing in many children each time it has been hosted, growing in numbers throughout this past summer — she attributed this success to the variety of blocks available. “It’s very popular,” Kuczek said. “We probably have, besides a toy store, the area’s best selection of Legos. We have hot pink and purple, trees and flowers, and we have roof tiles and so much more.” Most participants of Lego My Library just made a project of their own, not quite following the theme, but had stories beNeighbors | Amanda Tonoli hind the creation to tie it all to- Pictured, from left, are Alex and Audrey Taranto choosing Lego pieces to build their creations at Lego My Library on Aug. 21. gether.

Boardman library offers book buffet for kids By amanda tonoli atonoli@vindy.com

The Boardman library hosted the All You Can Read Buffet on Aug. 14. Children were invited to come to the library and either pick out books or bring books of their own to challenge themselves and read for four straight hours. Many brought blankets and pillows to get comfortable while they carried out their challenge. The librarians provided a variety of snacks and food items ranging from pizza and pepperoni rolls to chips and cookies. Librarian Allison Graf participated, as well as headed this

event. “This is just such a fun program,” Graf said. Graf said she enjoyed seeing the students challenge themselves at the library – in a fun way. “It’s reading and eating,” Graf said. “Kids come prepared to read for four hours and see if they have what it takes to be able to do it.” Students were welcomed to come and go as they pleased throughout the course of the four hours. The library had 20 students sign up to participate and each year the event grows more popular.

The Happiness Coalition is taking their mission to Punta Cana in Aug. 2016. Coalition leaders Terri Crogan, Robyn Podboy and Melissa Rocci put together a trip from Aug. 23-27 for a four night conference in Punta Cana. The trip was said to be fun, interactive and inspirational. “This is going to be life-enhancing,” Crogan said. Podboy said this trip is for people looking not only to find happiness, but also those who seek to enhance their current happiness. “It is a group of like-minded, positive people,” Podboy said. Podboy said she was seeking to amp up the enthusiasm about life. Crogan encourages those hesitant to be with people they don’t know or those coming without friends to come anyway. “Don’t be afraid to come alone because on this trip you won’t ever be alone,” Crogan said. Crogan spoke about their previous trip, a cruise in Feb. 2015, and said the group who went became one with one another. “They started out shy and kind of reserved and by the fourth day they made life-long friends,” Crogan said. For the conference, the coalition invited and are continuing to invite dynamic speakers, powerful and positive people to light fire under others in terms of changing lives for the better. An informational meeting for this trip is being offered at 7 p.m. at Tequila Jalisco in Canfield — 583 E. Main St., Canfield, OH 444506 — on Sept. 24. On Sept. 3, The Friendly Squares dance club of Niles danced at the Canfield Fair. A new class will begin on Sept. 15 at 7 p.m. at the Niles Senior Center in downtown Niles. The class is for all ages.

Centennial celebration to honor Sister Jerome Oct. 11 Sister Jerome Corcora n, founder of Sister Jerome’s Poor, Millcreek Children’s Center and the Youngstown Community School, will be honored at 5:30 p.m. on Oct. 11 at The Georgetown Banquet Center, at a Centennial Celebration of her life and work. Corcoran’s 100th Birthday is April 2016. All proceeds from the dinner will benefit Sister Jerome’s Poor, a tax-exempt nonprofit organization that provides mentoring and financial aid and support to inner-city youth and families. Corcoran has addressed the needs of Mahoning Valley children for more than 70 years. She earned a doctorate from Case Western Reserve University in 1952 and supervised education in the Diocese of Youngstown for 15 years. In 1976, she founded Millcreek Children’s Center, which she directed for 36 years. In 1998, Corcoran, Sister Mary Dunn and Developing Potential Inc. founded a charter school, Yo u n g s t o w n C o m mu n i t y School. She led both schools until 2012. Then, at age 96, Corcoran established Sister Jerome’s Poor under the auspices of the Ursuline Sisters. Her mission is to help working poor families in emergencies and help 12 innercity college students graduate and obtain good jobs. Her program’s success rate among college students is 84 percent, and

in the last year Sister Jerome’s Poor has helped more than 400 working poor residents of Youngstown. The dinner is $45 per person. For reservations, call Sister Jerome’s Poor at 330-792-7636. All reservations and contributions are due by Sept. 30. Benefactors and special gifts will be recognized in the Tribute Book. For more information regarding the Tribute Book, contact Bernadette at 330-792-6033. Honorary co-chairpersons of the Centennial Celebration are Clarence and Rosemarie Smith, Dr. and Mrs. John C. York, Rev. Morris Lee, Bishop George V. Murry, SJ, Jim and Ellen Tressel, Harry Meshel, Dr. George Beelen, Phil Dennison, Christine Dennison, Patricia Syak, Dee Crawford and Lou Zona. Genera l co-cha ir persons are James Pazol, Mark Munroe, Tony Mancino and Donna Bricker. Sister Jerome’s Poor operates from The Ursuline Center, located at 4280 Shields Road in Canfield. In addition to Corcoran, the Advisory Committee for Sister Jerome’s Poor consists of Donna Bricker, James Colella, Sister Nancy Dawson, Sister Mary Dunn, Charles T. George, Joseph T. Joseph, Tony Mancino, Sister Mary McCormick, Mark E. Munroe, James L. Pazol, Gerald A. Peskin, Clarence R. Smith, Gere Weller and Joan Yanchick.
