Sunrise of Senior Living of Poland danced the day away to the hawaiian beat at their annual luau on Aug. 13. Residents and staff got to celebrate this special event in the garden with food, fun and social interaction to the wonderful music of Steve Fazzini. Concierge Paula Baldwin said she appreciated the cooperating weather for their special event. “Today was a perfect day be-
cause it’s not too hot,” Baldwin said. Jacki Jones, Sunrise employee, agreed and said even the residents were noticing the warm weather, lightening up not only the skies, but also their moods. “It’s great seeing everyone outside enjoying the fresh air – the weather cooperated for us,” Jones said. “I just love seeing the smile on everyone’s face. ...They love the band and they love the food – a few of them will even reminisce about a trip they took to Hawaii.”
Jones said many of the retired service men talked about their stations in Hawaii with one another, as well. Judy Seiber, activities director, donned on a grass skirt and brought residents up to the middle of the garden to dance around to the Hawaiian music. “Residents love it when we dance around and make fools of ourselves,” Seiber said. “It’s our first picnic outside [this year], so we’re excited about that.” The luau has been going on for quite some time at Sunrise – 17
years – and proves to be popular among the residents. “Everyone is out but about 10 people,” Jones said. “We’ve had this every year since we opened.” Baldwin said overall this was a happy place to be, not only for the residents, but also the employees. “Some of the girls that have worked here have been here for 17 years, that’s when it first opened and I think that says something for a facility to have long-term [employees],” Baldwin said.

The Summer Discovery Program for the Public Libraries of Youngstown and Mahoning County saved teens from summer boredom with the variety of numerous fun activities for the summer of 2015. On Aug. 13 the Poland library hosted Unmask! Comic Book Program with Jerry DeCaire presenting Science of the Superhero for the last blowout teen program from Summer Discovery. Librarian Cindy Beach said she was excited for the presentation, not just for the comic book elements, but the presentation also had elements from science and math. “He [DeCaire] shows how different geometric shapes goes
into what he draws,” Beach said. Teens had to opportunity to participate in games, crafts, pictures and more before the arrival of speaker and comic book artist Jerry DeCaire. Meganne Evans, Daniel Pirone and Matthew Welton – leaders of the Teen Advisory Board for the library – came to Unmask to talk to other teens about making comics, answer questions prospective Teen Advisory Board members have and show off their work of art, a graphic novel/webcomic. Meganne Evans, the social media manager and main artist, said between school and various other activities they have to find time to create not only the novel, but also the social media to help promote their creation. “This is basically what we do
in our spare time,” Evans said. Daniel Pirone does most of the scripting and storyline for the novel and prides himself for making what was a hobby into a real, workable piece of art. “I just like how something that I have been doing for six years now is actually going to be a thing that makes sense, instead of having it as an idea,” Pirone said. Evans agreed and said things that she has always thought about are actually being put together for others to be able to view. “Every kid probably has the thought, ‘That would be so cool if that happened,’ or ‘Oh I’ve got this guy in my head like my imaginary friend,’ and now we are kind of putting that out for people to see,” Evans said.

Cross country begins season with a win The Boardman Spartan Cross Country team began their season on Aug. 29 by winning the George Clements Invitational at University School in suburban Cleveland. Leading the Spartans was senior Nathan Hadley finishing third overall out of 196 varsity and junior varsity runners in a time of 16:14. Finishing next for the Spartans was senior Ethan Schwendeman in a time of 17:28 which placed him sixth overall. He was followed by junior Chris Butler in a time of 17:36 which
was good enough for seventh place. Junior Nathaniel Ams was next up in 16th place at 18:10 and junior Nick Digiacomo was 25th overall at 18:33. “This was a nice confidence booster for us,” said Boardman Head Coach John Phillips. “We had a difficult 2014 season and to start off 2015 with a trophy is a great beginning for a new season.” Scoring high for the Spartans was sophomore Luke Hetzel with a personal best time of 19:11. Hetzel’s effort earned him
this week’s BW3 Runner of the Week award. “Luke has worked hard all summer logging a lot of miles,” Phillips said. “That solid volume of miles is already paying dividends. That is what you have to do to be successful in this sport — put in the work and good things happen.” Setting new personal bests at University School were senior Brett Brunko at 20:07, Butler, Hetzel, freshman Andrew Beichner at 23:01 and freshman Matt Welton at 24:12.

Centennial celebration to honor Sister Jerome Sister Jerome Corcora n, founder of Sister Jerome’s Poor, Millcreek Children’s Center and the Youngstown Community School, will be honored at 5:30 p.m. on Oct. 11 at The Georgetown Banquet Center, at a Centennial Celebration of her life and work. Corcoran’s 100th Birthday is April 2016. All proceeds from the dinner will benefit Sister Jerome’s Poor, a tax-exempt nonprofit organization that provides mentoring and financial aid and support to inner-city youth and families. Corcoran has addressed the needs of Mahoning Valley children for more than 70 years. She earned a doctorate from Case Western Reserve University in 1952 and supervised education in the Diocese of Youngstown for 15 years. In 1976, she founded Millcreek Children’s Center, which she directed for 36 years. In 1998, Corcoran, Sister Mary Dunn and Developing Potential Inc. founded a charter school, Yo u n g s t o w n C o m mu n i t y School. She led both schools until 2012. Then, at age 96, Corcoran established Sister Jerome’s Poor
under the auspices of the Ursuline Sisters. Her mission is to help working poor families in emergencies and help 12 innercity college students graduate and obtain good jobs. Her program’s success rate among college students is 84 percent, and in the last year Sister Jerome’s Poor has helped more than 400 working poor residents of Youngstown. The dinner is $45 per person. For reservations, call Sister Jerome’s Poor at 330-792-7636. All reservations and contributions are due by Sept. 30. Benefactors and special gifts will be recognized in the Tribute Book. For more information regarding the Tribute Book, contact Bernadette at 330-792-6033. Honorary co-chairpersons of the Centennial Celebration are Clarence and Rosemarie Smith, Dr. and Mrs. John C. York, Rev. Morris Lee, Bishop George V. Murry, SJ, Jim and Ellen Tressel, Harry Meshel, Dr. George Beelen, Phil Dennison, Christine Dennison, Patricia Syak, Dee Crawford and Lou Zona. G e n e r a l c o - c h a i r p e rsons are James Pazol, Mark Munroe, Tony Mancino and
Donna Bricker. Sister Jerome’s Poor operates from The Ursuline Center, located at 4280 Shields Road in Canfield. In addition to Corcoran, the Advisory Committee for Sister Jerome’s Poor consists of Don-

Co-Parenting with the Coalition The Happiness Coa lition strikes again in helping divorced people navigate their way back to successful and happy lives — especially with children. Coalition leaders — Robyn Podboy, Melissa Rocci and Terri Crogan — are hosting Learn to Co-Parent Through Divorce in October. Through your parenting partnership, your children should recognize that they are more important than the conflict that ended the marriage, and understand that your love for them will prevail despite the changing circumstances. Divorce is never a first choice or a desired end, and often children become caught in the middle. This class is intended for parents to learn about coping with children during a divorce and
