Canfield Presbyterian Church Weekday Preschool Open House Canfield Presbyterian Church Weekday Preschool hosted its Open House for the 2015-2016 school year on Aug. 19. The children were able to enjoy playing together with each other and all of the toys, under the watchful supervision of some of the teachers, parents and grandparents, while the other parents adjourned upstairs to learn all of the details of the program for the coming year from Preschool Director Karen Morvay, after which any questions that they had were answered. The school was open for the families to explore so that the children could get familiar with their new classrooms. Canfield Presbyterian Church Weekday Preschool provides children with a variety of learning experiences which will stimulate their curiosity, challenge their physical and intellectual abilities, foster their creativity and encourage self-expression and independence as well as develop a sense of self-fulfillment. Unit topics are chosen according to the play interests and abilities of young children. Classrooms are arranged with well-defined interest center table toys and other manipulative toys: housekeeping, math, blocks, language arts, science, sand and water. On Aug. 2, Boardman Township Park was filled with more than 700 classic cars for Cars in the Park car show. People from all over the area drove in their prized possessions to be judged and congregate with other car buffs from around town. Second place winners Peppy Gilmore-Humphreys and Tom Humphreys came to enjoy the nice day in the park with their car. The two are from Florida, moving closer to the area for family. Gilmore-Humphreys said although they went to car shows
Dick and Jill Bray had a different interest when it came to car shows – the driving aspect. “I just like to drive,” Dick Bray said. Jill Bray said she enjoyed seeing people during this season that she might not be able to make it out to see when the weather isn’t as nice – especially in the winter. “Seeing people all the time is the nicest, we have a good time,” Jill Bray said. “We get together and drive all over the place.” Gilmore-Humphreys husband, Tom, didn’t quite like car shows for the same social reason, but for the basic element of every car show. “I just love cars,” Humphreys said.

in Florida the ones in this area are her favorite. “You get to talk to and meet a lot of nice people,” GilmoreHumphreys said. “Everyone has the same interest most people are here for the cars.” Gilmore-Humphreys said the shows in Florida are similar, but they are smaller, more quaint gatherings, whereas here they are big events. Jerry Benyo, owner of a 1965 Impala SS Convertible, frequents car shows in the area, this is his seventh this year. Benyo agreed with GilmoreHumphreys, and said he met a lot of nice friends along the way. “You meet a lot of good people, friendly and it’s nice to ride up and ride home,” Benyo said.

The 2015 Canfield Cardinals High School boys and girls soccer teams were officially introduced during the teams’ Meet the Team event on Aug. 18. Boys and girls Head Coach Phil Simone introduced the girls varsity and boys varsity team members, while girls junior varsity members were introduced by Girls JV Coach Aleesha Denmeade and members of the Boys Junior Varsity team were introduced by Boys JV Coach Kyle Reese. “Ever y team member has
trained hard and worked hard to prepare for the upcoming season and have enjoyed team building experiences,” Simone said. In introducing the girls varsity team, Simone had a warning for the team. “I have told the girls they have a target on their backs. Everyone wants to beat us after winning so many district championships. And now that we are moving up to Division 1, that target increases. With the hard work these players have put in and with the talent they have, they can lead us to another dis-
trict championship. They work together as a team and they can overcome anything anyone throws at them,” Simone said. Simone also had some wise words for the boys varsity team. “This team has to take one game at a time and not look ahead. They have high expectations, but must go slowly and take one game at a time. This team can accomplish anything they want to,” Simone said. The Canfield High School Soccer Boosters hosted the evening for the teams and their family and friends in the high school cafeteria.

End of summer party By AMANDA TONOLI atonoli@vindy.com
The Summer Discovery Program for the Public Libraries of Youngstown and Mahoning County, PLYMC, came to an end on Aug. 10 at the End of Summer Reading Teen Party at the Boardman library. Librarians Allison Graf, Karen Saunders and Selina Phillips set up games, crafts and a snack table for students to enjoy during their celebration for the completion of the program. Laini Bondi joined the party,
sharing her expertise in Scattergories and not-so meticulous moves in Jenga Boom. Bondi said she enjoyed reading the books for the program and really liked the superhero theme this year. “It’s awesome,” Bondi said. “If it was a movie I would rate it five stars.” This year the regular summer read i ng prog ra m wa s cha nged to Discover y due to the varying activities and crafts incorporated – making it more than just reading.
