Unmask! unveils the upside to summer reading By amanda tonoli atonoli@vindy.com

The Summer Discovery Program for the Public Libraries of Youngstown and Mahoning County saved teens from summer boredom with the variety of numerous fun activities for the summer of 2015. On Aug. 13 the Poland library hosted Unmask! Comic Book Program with Jerry DeCaire presenting Science of the Superhero for the last blowout teen program from Summer Discovery. Librarian Cindy Beach said she was excited for the presentation, not just for the comic book

elements, but the presentation also had elements from science and math. “He [DeCaire] shows how different geometric shapes goes into what he draws,” Beach said. Teens had to opportunity to participate in games, crafts, pictures and more before the arrival of speaker and comic book artist Jerry DeCaire. Meganne Evans, Daniel Pirone and Matthew Welton — leaders of the Teen Advisory Board for the library — came to Unmask to talk to other teens about making comics, answer ques-

tions prospective Teen Advisory Board members have and show off their work of art, a graphic novel/webcomic. Meganne Evans, the social media manager and main artist, said between school and various other activities they have to find time to create not only the novel, but also the social media to help promote their creation. “This is basically what we do in our spare time,” Evans said. Daniel Pirone does most of the scripting and storyline for the novel and prides himself for making what was a hobby into a real, workable piece of art.

“I just like how something that I have been doing for six years now is actually going to be a thing that makes sense, instead of having it as an idea,” Pirone said. Evans agreed and said things that she has always thought about are actually being put together for others to be able to view. “Every kid probably has the thought, ‘That would be so cool if that happened,’ or ‘Oh I’ve got this guy in my head like my imaginary friend,’ and now we are kind of putting that out for people to see,” Evans said.

Informational meeting for Punta Cana Destination Adventure On Sept. 24 at 7 p.m., an informational meeting will take place for The Happiness Coalition’s Punta Cana Destination Adventure for April 23-27, 2016 at Tequila Jalisco on 583 E. Main St. in Canfield. Light appetizers will be served and a cash bar will be available. For more information about the Punta Cana Destination Adventure, visit www.happinesscoalition.com.

KATE LANDRY, KRISTA THOMPSON and KRISTA NOLFI.

SENIOR SALUTE: BAND EDITION Kate Landry: Mellophone, Flute, Piano Krista Thompson: Oboe, Clarinet, English Horn, French Horn and Flag Line Krista Nolfi: Trumpet, Piano When did you start playing your instrument? Kate: I started playing the piano in the second grade and it was my lesson teacher who encouraged me to play the flute - she also taught flute lessons. So I started playing the flute in the fifth-grade, and I started playing the mellophone for marching band during my freshman year because I wanted to be in the same squad as my older sister. Kristen: I play various instruments such as the clarinet, oboe, English horn and French horn. I first started off on the clarinet, but soon switched in the seventh-grade to oboe due to it being more challenging. Krista: I began playing the piano when I was 4-years-old because I wanted to learn how to play. When I was in the fifthgrade I began to play the trumpet. I chose the trumpet because it was what my dad played when he was in high school.

Q. A.

memory of being in Q. Best band/marching band? Kate: My best memories A. of marching band have been when we attended Massillon Band Night because that is where I have realized why we do this. It is so rewarding to see

what we accomplish as a band with all of our hard work. Kristen: My favorite memory of band is our annual water balloon fight after practice. And - of course - pelting our band director with the balloons. After several weeks of hard work and practice is this when we can have some fun. Krista: My favorite memory is from my freshman year during spirit week. Every day we have a different theme and on Friday we had a huge water balloon fight. It was freshman and sophomores versus the juniors and seniors. We thought we had so many balloons until we saw the other side, but it was still a lot of fun. is music important to Q. Why you? Kate: Music is something A. I’ve always enjoyed in my free time, and it is a great way to

take your mind off of things and relax. I have really enjoyed our half-time show this year. Kristen: Music has always been a major part of my life. I just love “The Nutcracker” and it was by far one of the most enjoyable performances. Krista: Music is important to me because I grew up with it, and it has become a part of my life. My favorite song was “All of the Lights,” which we played my freshman year because we did a big choreographed dance. Another favorite was in my junior year when we played the “Avengers” medley because it was a lot fun and the audience really enjoyed it.

you were speaking to a Q. Ifgroup of fifth-grade stu-

dents who were thinking of joining the band, what would you tell them is the number 1 reason for joining the band? Kate: Music is a great hobby A. to start at a young age and to continue as you get older,

even if you do not pursue music as your career. Band is where you will meet many great people who will become your closest friends. Kristen: I originally joined band to go on trips and meet new people. However, I found that band is something I was great at and I love being part of it. Krista: The best part of being in the marching band is the friendships you make. Everyone starts the same - just learning instruments, but then as you get older and better the friendships you have grown much stronger. college do you hope Q. What to attend/intended major? Kate: I do not know what A. college I will be attending at this time, but I am consider-

ing a major in Music or Math. Kristen: I would like to attend Youngstown State University with possibly a major in Software Engineering, with a minor in Photography. Krista: I am undecided on where I would like to attend college at this time. However, I am considering Ohio University or Kent State University and major in Speech Pathology or Architecture.

How much is a serving? Most Americans don’t know. That’s one of the factors contributing to the obesity epidemic in the United States. Learn what constitutes a single serving and how to manage portion size during the next “Healthy Eating for You: Portion Control” presentation Sept. 15 at St. Elizabeth Boardman Hospital, located at 8401 Market St. in Boardman. Registered dietitian and community educator Bridget Lackey will lead the informational discussion and answer questions from 12:30-2 p.m. in the Willow Room. The presentation, provided by Mercy Health Youngstown, formerly Humility of Mary Health Partners, is free and open to the public. Reservations are appreciated and can be made by calling 330-4803070.

thing he wanted to do for a very long time — have recess before lunch. “We have three separate lunches, cafeteria is crowded but we are making it work,” Masucci said. Union also acquired a new driveway to help with bussing along with additional parking space. “Sixteen buses just roll through here and it’s nice — no traffic jams,” Masucci said. Also in the works for renovations for Union, Masucci is having an elevator put in for students with disabilities.

After the elementary school moves, kindergarten through second-grade students are at Poland Union Elementary School and third-fourth grade students are at Dobbins Elementary School. But what happened to Poland North Elementary School? Principal Michael Masucci took the lead of both Union and North, resulting in moving Union’s preschool to the empty building. “Because of the sheer volume of kids in this building [Union] we use every crevice,” Masucci said. “We had to move our preschool out to North. So the former Poland North Elementary is now just Poland North.” In addition to now being a home to preschool students, North is also home to students participating in aftercare programs. Masucci has staff at North that work almost entirely independently — and successfully so. “I have great people over at North that really do a ton of work,” Masucci said. Those in the preschool program now have more space and opportunities for they no longer have to share with an entire school of elementary school students — it is all their own. What was once a two-classroom preschool has quickly become four. “We have really enhanced our preschool program and my personal prediction is that the preschool is going to double by this time next year,” Masucci said. North preschoolers also share space with a Mahoning County preschool that used to be at Manor Elementary in Struthers. Working together is a big part of sharing this space dedicated now to specifically preschool students. “We try to create a school culture where everyone is welcomed and appreciated,” Masucci said.

Happiness Coalition to take trip to Punta Cana By amanda tonoli atonoli@vindy.com

The Happiness Coalition is taking their mission to Punta Cana in Aug. 2016. Coalition leaders Terri Crogan, Robyn Podboy and Melissa Rocci put together a trip from Aug. 23-27 for a four night conference in Punta Cana. The trip was said to be fun, interactive and inspirational. “This is going to be life-enhancing,” Crogan said. Podboy said this trip is for people looking not only to find happiness, but also those who seek to enhance their current happiness. “It is a group of like-minded, positive people,” Podboy said. Podboy said she was seeking to amp up the enthusiasm about life. Crogan encourages those hesitant to be with people they don’t know or those coming without

friends to come anyway. “Don’t be afraid to come alone because on this trip you won’t ever be alone,” Crogan said. Crogan spoke about their previous trip, a cruise in Feb. 2015, and said the group who went became one with one another. “They started out shy and kind of reserved and by the fourth day they made life-long friends,” Crogan said. For the conference, the coalition invited and are continuing to invite dynamic speakers, powerful and positive people to light fire under others in terms of changing lives for the better. An informational meeting for this trip is being offered at 7 p.m. at Tequila Jalisco in Canfield –583 E. Main St., Canfield, OH 44406 – on Sept. 24. If one cannot attend the meeting, they can contact coalition leaders at www.happinesscoalition.com.
