Valley Legacy Awards 2018 nominees announced Nominees were recently announced for the 2018 Valley Legacy Awards. Now in its 14th year, the annual event honors civicminded seniors and senior advocates for their contributions to the Mahoning Valley. The 22 nominees will be recognized and the Valley Legacy Awards presented to the winning Outstanding Seniors and Outstanding Advocates at a luncheon on Oct. 10. Austintown marching band hosts 47th band night

The Austintown Fitch High School marching band hosted its 47th annual band night on Aug. 27.

“Band night really showcases the hard work the band kids have done over the summer,” said Wes O’Connor, the director of the Austintown band.

Five bands joined Austintown at Fitch’s football stadium to play in the event, Lisbon, McDonald, Girard, Springfield and Canfield. Each band played a show they have been working on during the summer, which were around 15 minutes long.

“Let’s face it, the band is limited in the nine minute half

time show for football games,” O’Connor said. “Band night is a way to take more time to show off students’ talent.”

O’Connor said that every year the event is coordinated by the parents of the Senior Drum Major. This year, that musician is Nick Mattusi.

“The best thing about band night is that, when people play at an athletic event half of that stadium leaves disappointed and half leaves happy. After band night everyone leaves excited,” O’Connor said.

Lisbon was the first to play.

The director of the Lisbon band, Scott Miller, is an alumni of Austintown Fitch. He graduated in 2011 and was a former drum

major.

T he d i rec tor of t he Girard marching band, Steven Nawrocki, also has a connection to Austintown. Nawrocki did his student teaching at Austintown under O’Connor before starting as the director of the Girard marching band.

“We have a great relationship with all of the local directors, we all support each other,” O’Connor said.

During the show, Brad Gessner a member of the Austintown Band Parents Association said the organization was selling concessions. Along with food, the band parents also sold Christmas ornaments, programs, T-shirts and hats to sup-

port the band. There was also a 50/50 raffle, which benefitted the band.

“Everything we do all day is to support the band,” Gessner said.

The Austintown band played their first show, a tribute to World War I. On Nov. 11, the Fitch marching band will host its annual Veterans Concert and Chilli Cook-Off. According to Gessner the band is currently looking for people to participate in the cook off.

“This year is the 100th anniversary of World War 1, so we are doing a special concert in honor of those veterans,” Gessner said.

Lentini speaks on experiences in Korean War Thomas Lentini, a veteran of the Korean War, will speak to the World War II Heritage Group when it meets on Sept.17 at Ala Carte Catering at 6:15 p.m. The speech will be preceded by a buffet dinner, with reservations available by calling David Frank at 330-757-0515 by Sept. 16.

GA to meet twice this week Gamblers Anonymous, a 12-Step fellowship of compulsive gamblers who want to recover from their gambling addictions, will meet twice this week in the Youngstown-Warren area.

A GA meeting is offered every Friday at Westminster Church, located at 119 Stadium Drive in Boardman, and another is offered every Sunday at Christ Church Presbyterian, located at 3425 Hopkins Road in Youngstown (in Cornersburg). Both meetings begin promptly at 7:30 p.m. and last about 1-1/2 hours. Those who believe gambling has affected any part of their

lives are urged to attend. There is no charge for the meetings, although collections are taken up at each meeting to provide for coffee, sugar and creamer, treats and free literature. Gotta Move story time This event is for children who are ages 2-5 who are accompanied by a caregiver. Austintown library closed for two weeks for renovations

The Austintown branch of the Public Library of Youngstown and Mahoning County will be closed for two weeks beginning Sept. 10.

According to a press release written by Janet Loew, the library spokesperson, the closing is due to maintenance needed on the parking lot.

“The branch’s parking lot has had drainage issues resulting in excess water ponding. It was determined that the parking lot needs additional sub-basins, plus resurfacing,” Loew said.

The contract for the construction was awarded to Foust Construction of Girard.

The decision was made to close the library for repairs at a Board of Trustees special meeting, which took place on Aug. 20.

“T he need to close t he Austintown library during this work comes from both the extensiveness of the work on the parking lot and the fact that the safety of our library customers is a priority when such a sizeable repair project is being conducted at the branch,” said Library Executive Director Aimee Fifarek.

During the two weeks the library’s building and grounds department will be doing additional cleaning and repair work inside the building

Due to renovations on the parking lot the Austintown library will be closed for two weeks begining Sept. 10.

The library will not be accessible to patrons during this time, including for book dropoffs. Patrons of the library are encouraged to go to two of the closest libraries, the Canfield branch, located at 43 W. Main St., and the Michael Kusalaba library, located at 2815 Mahoning Ave. in Youngstown.

Most programs at the library scheduled for this time are cancelled, and all the librarians will be scattered to other branches during this time.

The Mighty Uke event, a viewing of the movie, was resched-

uled for Oct. 20 along with the Paw Patrol Party event, which was rescheduled for Oct. 6.

During the special meeting, the board also voted to repaint both the Austintown and Springfield branches.

Both libraries will remain open during painting.

The Austintown library is also expected to take on roof repairs for this year, the contract for which was awarded to G & W Roofing.

The winners of the Austintown Fourth of July parade float competition received their prizes on Aug. 13.

Bruce Shepas, who has been Parade Chairman for two years and is also the owner of Austintown Bounce, said this year the winners embodied the Independence Day celebration.

Not every float that enters the parade chooses to be judged, though this year 16 floats did participate in the competition.

This year’s judges included Chris Davis, the Greenwood Chevrolet salesman of the year, WFMJ anchor Caroline Collins and Israel Zambrano the owner

of Los Gallos.

The awards this year were best commercial, best noncommercial and best overall float.

Shepas also said that they added a community choice award for the first time this year.

The honorary judge was Cody O’Connell, the 7-year-old who created a Little Free Library, a free book exchange, in his neighborhood.

O’Connell chose the VFW Post # 4237 as the community winner.

West Side Tire, represented

by Joanna Parker, won the best commercial float award.

Parker received a plaque and

a check for $100, which was donated to the Austintown Police Department.

The Austintown Senior Center, represented by Jessica Ricker, won the best non-commercial float, also receiving a plaque and $100.

Lynn Toman represented the Motor Maffia Motorsports as the winner of the best overall float, receiving a plaque and a check for $250.

The theme of the 2018 parade was “A Star Spangled Salute” and the Grand Marshall was Colonel Dan Sacachene, 910th Airlift Commander of the Youngstown Air Reserve Station.

Brookdale resident celebrates 100 years

Brookda le Senior Liv ing resident Elizabeth “Betty” Leo turned 100-years-old on Aug. 14.

The day was celebrated by the residents of Brookdale with a party, including cake and entertainment.

Betty worked as a librarian for 70 years in Edgewater New Jersey.

She is described by her niece, Elizabeth Ellis, and great niece, Sarah Ellis, as independent and out spoken.

Bett y worked as a chi ldren’s librarian since she was 16-years-old.

“She did fantastic summer reading programs and classes that came in,” Elizabeth said.

“She always had special displays in the library and the kids loved to come see what she did this month.”

She loved her work so much that in 2004, when she was 86-years-old, the library had to buy her out of her position so that she would retire.

“She was willing to stay until she was 200, I guess,” Elizabeth said, with a laugh. “So they actually gave her money to leave.”

Elizabeth said that her points of pride were always the programs she created at the library and the way she kept her home.

“She had two guinea pigs, Dewey and Decimal, that she kept at the library for the kids,” Sarah said, “She really loved what she did.”

Betty was married for 25 years, but never had any children, according to Elizabeth.

This, and the fact that she walked every day, were the two things that Sarah attributes to her long and healthy life.

Elizabeth said that Betty lived in her house until a year ago, when she was 99.

She said that Betty loved to travel, having gone to a multitude of countries including Egypt, Guatemala, Hungary and more.

“She rode a camel in Egypt when she was in her 80’s,” Sarah said. “She loved to get out and go.”

Having lived in Edgewater her whole life, Betty was able to go across the water to New York City a lot according to Sarah.

Dave Propri sung Tony Bennett songs to Betty Leo for her 100th birthday party as Betty sung along with him.

There she and her friends would attend shows, go to dinner and go shopping, which according to Sarah was one of her favorite things to do.

“She loves her purses, shoes, clothes, just all of that,” Sarah said.

She was diagnosed with Alzheimer disease, but according to Vanessa Montgomery, the program coordinator at Brookdale, it never gets her down.

“What makes her special is that she is the one who will tell you just how it is,” Montgomery said.

Montgomery said that Betty is a major flirt at the home, always grabbing at the men and making jokes.

“Any guy that goes by she’ll grab them and say ‘hey good looking,’” Montgomery said.

“She still knows a good looking man when she sees one and

she’s not afraid to tell them.”

To celebrate her birthday, residents of Brookdale were treated to the a singing performance by Dave Propri.

Propri is a regular guest at Brookdale, and did a special show for the residents of Tony Bennett songs, since he is Betty’s favorite musician.

During the performance, Betty sang along to the songs as Propri performed them.

Bells to ring in celebration of signing of The Constitution The Daughters of the American Revolution will celebrate the beginning of Constitution Week on Sept.

17 by participating in the nation-wide Bells Across America event at 4 p.m.

The Mahoning Chapter of the Daughters of the American Revolution are asking schools, churches and individuals throughout The Valley to celebrate the signing of The Constitution by ringing bells at 4 p.m. on Sept. 17, the same date and time it was signed in 1787. There will be a gathering to read the Preamble and ring individual bells at Road of Remembrance Rock, located on Market Street and Newport Drive in Boardman, at 3:30 p.m. on Sept. 17. Austintown library to close temporarily for repairs in September The Austintown library, located at 600 S. Raccoon Road, will be temporarily closed for two weeks for repairs to and repaving of the parking lot. The closing is expected to begin on Sept.

10. The Library’s Board of Trustees approved the parking lot repairs at a special meeting on Aug. 20, in addition to the exterior painting of the Austintown and Springfield locations. Both libraries will remain open during painting. Ongoing information can be found on the library’s website, libraryvisit.org, or Facebook page, LibraryMahoningCounty. Additional work being planned for the Austintown library includes roof repairs and exterior repairs. During the two-week closure, the library’s building and grounds department will take advantage of the opportunity to do cleaning and repair work inside the building, as well. The Austintown library will have security as needed during this period and book drops will not be available. Austintown library customers can use any of the other libraries in the Public Library of Youngstown and Mahoning County (PLYMC) system during the closing.

The event was part of the larger organization, National Night Out, which is “an annual community-building campaign that promotes police-community partnerships and neighborhood camaraderie.”

NNO has been hosting the night nation-wide for 21 years.

“Its a great engaging event for the community,” said Jane Woodsmith who came to the event. “It’s a great place to bring the whole family.”

Jackson, and said it was his first interaction with a police officer.

“He’s never had to experience safety professionals before. For him to be able to do this in a fun and safe way I think makes a big difference for him,” She said.

During the event Giant Eagle and Deitz & Watson made donations to the local fire department.

The donation was made from a portion of the sales from both businesses during July.

The Vegas Band played a concert during the event and vendors and food trucks sold concessions to those in attendance.

Wonder Woman, Black Panther and Spider Man were also in attendance to pose for pictures.

“It’s been a lot of fun, and I hope they continue this for a long time,” Woodsmith said.

Davidsons mark 50th jubilee at family dinner AUSTINTOWN

The Village Pump in Canfield was the setting for a family dinner July 13 in honor of the 50th wedding anniversary of Mr. and Mrs. Jerry Duke Davidson of Austintown.

The dinner was preceded by a surprise renewal of vows at Ridge Ranch Campground in Warren.

The couple has four children, Jerry (Kelly) Davidson of North Port, Fla.; Rebecca (Steve) Denney of Canfield; Danny R. Davidson of Austintown; and Fred A. Davidson, also of Austintown. Seven grandchildren complete their family.

Mr. Davidson and the former Nancy K. Wright were married July 13, 1968, at Sparta United Methodist Church in Sparta, N.C. Mrs. Davidson retired in 1995 from her work as a medical assistant with Dr. Badjatia in Boardman.
