Valley Legacy Awards 2018 nominees announced Nominees were recently announced for the 2018 Valley Legacy Awards. Now in its 14th year, the annual event honors civicminded seniors and senior advocates for their contributions to the Mahoning Valley. The 22 nominees will be recognized and the Valley Legacy Awards presented to the winning Outstanding Seniors and Outstanding Advocates at a luncheon on Oct. 10.

Those nominated by members of the community are: Outstanding Senior Award for Professional Excellence - Elder George Dial (Austintown), Stephana Liptak (Poland), Rich Morgan (Boardman) and Outstanding Senior Advocate - Laurie Antunze and Molly (Boardman). GA to meet twice this week Gamblers Anonymous, a 12Step fellowship of compulsive gamblers who want to recover from their gambling addictions, will meet twice this week in the Youngstown-Warren area. A GA meeting is offered every Friday at Westminster Church, located at 119 Stadium Drive in Boardman, and another is offered every Sunday at Christ Church Presbyterian, located at 3425 Hopkins Road in Youngstown (in Cornersburg).

Both meetings begin promptly at 7:30 p.m. and last about 1-1/2 hours. Those who believe gambling has affected any part of their lives are urged to attend.

There is no charge for the meetings, although collections are taken up at each meeting to provide for coffee, sugar and creamer, treats and free literature. Carbless Craze Cafe cuts ribbon in Boardman

Carbless Craze Cafe, a new businesses on Market Street in Boardman, had its official ribbon cutting ceremony Sept. 7.

The new cafe is located at 7403 Market Street in Boardman.

The owners of the cafe, Ammie and Jose Perez, said that they were excited to open in the area and serve the people of Boardman.

“Whenever there is something like this there has to be a team,” Ammie said. “We are Christian so its with God’s help we really believe that we got to where we are today.”

The cafe is unique for the area, Ammie said, as all items are gluten-free and low carb with no added preservatives or sugar.

“We try to be as healthy as we can,” she said.

Ammie explained that the idea for the cafe came after she lost weight a few years ago. She said that because of escalating health issues she decided to go on a low carb diet, and ended up losing 80 pounds.

“I noticed when I ate the bread, because it was low carb and high fat, the weeks that I had it I would lose more weight

then when I didn’t eat it,” Ammie said.

During this time she developed a series of low carb recipes, for items like bread and pizza.

Ammie’s sister, Venice Rose, said that the recipes were so good and the results so profound that there was a large interest in Ammie’s baking.

“I started buying them, and so did a lot of other people.

Everyone really liked the food and it wasn’t bad for you,” Rose said.

Ammie said that she and her husband began selling the items to family and friends out of their home. It was this interest, coupled by the encouragement from Jose and Rose, that led to the opening of Carbless Craze Cafe.

“Little by little, that’s how it started,” Ammie said.

The cafe sells a range of items, including bread, cookies, waffles, pancakes, pizza, salads and more.

“Those are the things you miss,” Ammie said. “A lot of people say low carb, you can’t do it long term. I feel like this helps it to be long term because you aren’t missing out on anything.”

She said that the cafe is great for anyone who is interested in

eating healthful, low carb, gluten free food and treats.

“We are trying to have a little bit of everything,” Ammie said.

She said a lot of her current customers have various health issues which require them to be on a gluten-free diet, but that there are many people she sells to who are simply looking to lose weight or enjoy the food.

“It’s for anybody who will benefit from eating low carb

and gluten-free,” Ammie said.

In the upcoming months, Ammie and Jose said that they are going to work to develop more recipes that are vegan and dairy-free.

“We want to encourage a wide range of customers, and make sure we have something for everyone,” Ammie said.

Bells to ring in celebration of signing of The Constitution The Daughters of the American Revolution will celebrate the beginning of Constitution Week on Sept.

17 by participating in the nation-wide Bells Across America event at 4 p.m.

The Mahoning Chapter of the Daughters of the American Revolution are asking schools, churches and individuals throughout The Valley to celebrate the signing of The Constitution by ringing bells at 4 p.m. on Sept. 17, the same date and time it was signed in 1787. There will be a gathering to read the Preamble and ring individual bells at Road of Remembrance Rock, located on Market Street and Newport Drive in Boardman, at 3:30 p.m. on Sept. 17. Akron Children’s Hero Patients inspire Akron Marathon runners When the going gets tough for runners in the Akron Children’s Hospital Akron marathon, half marathon and team relay presented by FirstEnergy on Sept. 29, they can find inspiration in the faces of this year’s featured Hero Patients from Akron Children’s Hospital. For the third year, more than a dozen patients were selected to represent the hospital as part of its role as the title beneficiary of the Akron Children’s Hospital Akron Marathon Race Series. The patients, who inspire with their stories of triumph over medical challenges, will cheer runners and walkers along the course. The patients will be featured in “hero zones” along the 26.2 mile route. Heroes will be accompanied by their parents, siblings and, in some cases, classmates, medical providers and friends at their zones, as well as representatives of the zone’s sponsors. The Boardman Schools Fund for Educational Excellence (BSFEE) has donated more than $58,000 since its inception in 2013 to enrich existing programs and to fund new projects in the Boardman School District. The non-profit organization does this through teacher mini grants that offer more than what state and local funding can provide. The BSFEE has installed its new officers for the 2018-19 school year. Incoming officers include retired Boardman teacher Edie Davidson as president, Meg Harris as vice president and Annie Sofran as secretary. Also, new this year to the board is Lynda Beichner, who has served as a PTA officer and co-chaired the Friends of Boardman Schools 2018 Levy Committee. Meg Harris is a Clinical Supervisor at Alta Behavioral Health. Annie Sofran is Senior Public Relations Specialist at Akron Children’s Hospital. CMHS Minority Alumni Council awards inaugural scholarships The Cardinal Mooney High School Minority Alumni Council (MAC) has awarded its inaugural scholarships to current CMHS students and graduating members of the Class of 2018.

Open to all students regardless of race or ethnicity, scholarships were awarded based on a thorough application process including personal statement/ essay, community service component and teacher recommendations.

The MAC awarded two laptop/book scholarships to graduating seniors to provide finan-

cial assistance in obtaining the necessary tools to excel at college.

Winners were Kenneth Bledsoe, II a Business Administration student at Hiram College who looks to be a future Law School graduate; and Jordyn Rae Austin, a current college freshman at Bowling Green who is studying education, looking to assist children with disabilities in her future career.

The MAC also awarded two academic achievement scholarships to current Mooney students. Two scholarships in the

amount of $1,000 each were given to academically exceptional students demonstrating a record of community service and intent to continue their education at Cardinal Mooney High School. This year’s winners were current senior Alana Bowser and junior Santino “Sonny” Rodriguez.

Newcomers of Mahoning Valley donated money to several local charities this year. The Capital Campaign is to build a wing that will be a model for animal welfare in the State of Ohio, allowing them to dramatically increase the number of spay/neuter surgeries and providing increased care and intake of abandoned animals. Angels for Animals is a 50lc3 charity whose mission is to educate the community about pet overpopulation and regular veterinary care, cultivate an awareness and responsibility toward the needs of companion animals, provide for the well-being of the community’s animals and instill respect for and appreciation for all living things, with a goal of having no unwanted animal births. Another donation was given to Rescue Mission of Mahoning Valley for the fund to construct a replacement building.

Rotary hosts Oktoberfestival The Rotary Club of Boardman invites the public to the 42nd annual Oktoberfestival on Sept. 30 from 9 a.m. until 5 p.m. at Boardman Township Park.

Gates will open to the public at 9 a.m. and admission is $5 per person. Children ages 12 and under will be admitted free.

More than 130 vendors (drawn from Ohio, Pennsylvania and West Virginia) are expected from artisan, craft, commercial and non-profit organizations at this one-day event. A food court will be set up in the park offering traditional carnival and fair food.

Entertainment will be provided throughout the day by local groups including the Boardman High School marching band.

The Oktoberfestival is the largest fundraiser for Boardman Rotary, founded in 1976, as a community day to promote Boardman Township and the residents of the township together in a spirit of fellowship. Through the years, the festival has grown in to the area’s largest one-day arts and crafts event.

ing is available on the west side of the park near the Southern Boulevard entrance starting at 9 a.m. and off-site parking will be available at the new Southwoods parking lot located just south of the park on Southern Boulevard.

Buses will be running between Southwoods and the park between 9 a.m. and 5 p.m.

Admission proceeds benefit Boardman Rotary, which undertakes many service projects throughout the year, as well as benefiting many local non-profit organizations such as Easter Seals and the Boy Scouts.

Boardman Rotary is an organization of business leaders focused on service above self.

Rotarians raise funds and volunteer for organizations locally and internationally.

Aside from the Oktoberfestival, Boardman Rotary raises funds through pancake breakfasts that run two week-ends each spring.

Boardman library hosts first ever Shining Star talent show

The Boardman library hosted its first ever Be a Shining Star talent show on Aug. 14.

Children’s librarian Karen Saunders hosted the event, wh ich a l lowed loca l ch i ldren a chance to display any unique talents they had.

“It’s a fun way to get kids out and showing off their skills,” Saunders said.

Three children participated in the talent show.

Sarah Rivzi did a ventriloquism act with her unicorn puppet, Sasha.

“I started doing ventriloquism last year,” Sarah said.

“I always thought it was a lot of fun.”

The show, called “The Advent u re,” was a n or ig i na l script written by Zarah’s older sister Sarah.

The final act of the show was t he you ngest sibling, Hassan Rivzi, who preformed an original song on his ukulele.

“We had a lot of unique talent, things kids don’t get a lot of chances to show off, so it was really cool being able to watch them all perform,” Saunders said.

After the show the children were broken into teams and played a song guessing game.

Saunders played various children’s songs on the key board and the team to be able to guess the most songs won.

Hassan and his mother took first place in the game, with Sarah and Zarah coming in a close second.

After the game all of the children received prizes for their performances.

The library gave each child a maraca and a frisbee.

Drinks and a light snack were also provided by the library.

The Boardman library hosted a play time event for children ages 2-6 on Aug. 15.

To start the program children’s librarian Karen Saunders read “Moo Moo Brown Cow” to the group that was gathered.

She gave each child a magnetic set of animals and had them follow along with the story.

When the animal that was on the child’s magnet came up, they would help continue the story through putting the animals on the board.

“That’s the way children tend to learn,” Saunders said.

“Through having fun.”

After the story, children and their families were encouraged to explore the six stations set up

by Saunders. The stations, Saunders said, were designed to help children work on various skills they will need to develop while they prepare to enter school.

“They have the different literacy skills that they work on through the games,” she explained.

The stations including rhyming games, puzzle building, sensory counting games and more.

“The purpose is making learning fun so you want games that encourage learning that isn’t something they would not want to do,” Saunders said. She said that these games help the children develop literacy skills, fine motor skills and work on con-

Glenwood cross country teams claim second place Neighbors | Submitted

The Boardman girls cross country team placed first overall at Columbiana High School. The Lady Spartans scorched the 5K course while battling extremely hot temps again this season. The Spartans first four girls crossed the finish line ahead of everyone else. Leading the way for Boardman was senior Sophia McGee, who placed first overall.

Sophomore Alayna Cuevas was next to finish the course, placing second. Sophomores Julia Gorby and Bailey Moore were next in line, finishing third and fourth, overall. Dunham named among fastest Spartan runners after Sept. 8 finish

Boardman junior Mitchel Dunham became the 17th fastest Spartan cross country runner in Boardman High School history after racing to a fourth place finish in a time of 16:20 to lead Boardman to a sixth place finish on Sept. 8 at Wooster.

Dunham was closely followed by sophomore Frank Bero in a career best time of 16:42-just 5 seconds from an All-Time Top 25 in BHS history spot. Bero was ninth out of 336 runners. Also scoring for the Spartan varsity was junior River Flatley in a new career best time of 17:43, which placed the Spartan 34th, sophomore Anthony Marshall in 45th in a career best time of 18:02 and sophomore Justin Maloney in 50th with a career best time of 18:06. The Spartans improve their 2018 record to 41-16.

“We had a great day,” said

Boardman Head Coach John Phillips. “Twenty-two out of our 27 runners earned a new career best time today in race conditions that were not that great.”

The Spartans finished behind two state-ranked teams, Hudson, which is currently first, and Worthington, ranked twentieth. Also finishing ahead of the Spartans were perennial powerhouses Wooster, Copley and Wadsworth.

“If you want to be good you have to run against good teamsthat is our philosophy,” Phillips said. “We travel every Saturday to compete against the very best that Ohio has to offer.”

The Spartan junior varsity team improved its season record to 36-13 after placing fourth overall on Sept. 8. The junior varsity team was led by sophomore Beau Gorby in a ca-

reer best time of 18:44, junior Jackson Lipka at 18:54, freshman Ben Alvarico in a new career best of 19:03, senior Cameron Maloney in a new personal best of 19:06 and junior Steven Moradian at 19:11.

Davidsons mark 50th jubilee at family dinner AUSTINTOWN

The Village Pump in Canfield was the setting for a family dinner July 13 in honor of the 50th wedding anniversary of Mr. and Mrs. Jerry Duke Davidson of Austintown.

The dinner was preceded by a surprise renewal of vows at Ridge Ranch Campground in Warren.

The couple has four children, Jerry (Kelly) Davidson of North Port, Fla.; Rebecca (Steve) Denney of Canfield; Danny R. Davidson of Austintown; and Fred A. Davidson, also of Austintown. Seven grandchildren complete their family.

Mr. Davidson and the former Nancy K. Wright were married July 13, 1968, at Sparta United Methodist Church in Sparta, N.C. Mrs. Davidson retired in 1995 from her work as a medical assistant with Dr. Badjatia in Boardman.
