Monday Night Writers meeting scheduled The next meeting of the Monday Night Writers will be Sept. 17 from 6-8 p.m. in the small meeting room at the Canfield branch of the Public Library of Youngstown and Mahoning County, located at 43 W. Main Street in Canfield.

Area writers, both published and unpublished, are invited to attend. Led by professional writer Nancy Christie, author of “Traveling Left Of Center And Other Stories,” “The Gifts of Change” and “RutBusting Book for Writers,” the two-hour sessions offer an opportunity for members to get group feedback on ‘works-inprogress.’ For more information, contact Nancy Christie at nancy@nancychristie.com.

Learn local history while fundraising Canfield History Walk: A Step Back in Time is a fundraising event for the nonprofit Canfield Historical Society. The history walk will guide visitors through Canfield’s past, from early pioneer days to the early 20th century. Local volunteers will portray historical persons and events. Re-enactments include an action packed bank robbery, the fatal shooting of Canfield Sheriff Cone, the funeral of Elijah Bond and more. The guided walk around Canfield’s central green will teach young and old about local history and foster a love of community. The

event will take place two Saturdays, Sept.

22 and 29. There will be four tours each day, beginning at 4 p.m. with the last tour departing at 5:45 p.m., rain or shine. The Sept. 22 tours are $10 per person. The Sept. 29 tours have a special walk/dinner package available. The ticket price, including dinner at Piccadilly Parlor, is $40 per couple or $25 per individual. Tickets may be purchased by calling the Canfield Historical Society at 330-533-3458.

Ladies Night Out event A Ladies Night Out event will take place on Sept. 20 at Western Reserve United Methodist Church, located at 4580 Canfield Road in Canfield. Doors open at 6 p.m. and the event starts at 6:30 p.m. Join them for an evening with local floral designers, Marie Borocz, Mark Green, Anna Howells and Jenny Wehr.

Appetizers and punch will be served.

Citizen science – collaboration in nature Join the Volunteer Naturalists to learn about how you can help support and collect scientific information related to nature, such as invasive species. This program will take place on Sept. 17 from 6:308:30 p.m at the Mahoning County Extension office. Program speaker Adam Zorn, Huston – Brumbaugh Nature Center, will show participants how to use a program called iNaturalist, which allows fellow naturalists to discuss their findings and observations. CLS annual tailgate brings community together

The Canfield Local School District hosted its fifth annual Canfield Community Tailgate prior to the Canfield Cardinals versus Chardon varsity football game on Sept. 7. Students, faculty, staff, families, friends and community members gathered to show their Cardinal spirit.

Taking place on the outdoor basketball courts at Canfield High School, the tailgate featured Canfield High School cheerleaders, Canfield Little Cardinals cheerleaders, the Canfield High School Cardinal Pride Marching Band and several family friendly activities. Hot dogs, chips and water were also provided, with O’Charley’s of Boardman and Superior Beverage donating the water.

D.J. Krooze was also on hand and kept the party going with lots of music, dancing and contests, courtesy of the Canfield Local Schools PTA, along with a bounce around slide from Boardman Bounce.

“Our goal is to have one community event each quarter. It’s become a tradition with this community tailgate in the fall, our chili cook-off in the winter and our appreciation breakfast around Christmas. It is a way for our community to come together, stress free, and enjoy

ourselves. With the tailgate, we have several different organizations involved, aside from the high school program, such as the Little Cardinals and the middle school football program. It’s easy to come to, especially with the football team we have, to show our Canfield pride,” said Canfield Local Schools Superintendent Alex Geordan.

Canfield’s school mascot, Big Red, arrived in style on a Cardinal Joint Fire District fire truck with lights flashing and sirens blaring to pump up the crowd.

Geordan said a big focus of the tailgate is for everyone to recon-

nect to start the new school year and to meet new friends and mingle with district administration.

“We merge our C.H. Campbell Elementary students and Hilltop Elementary students at the middle school in fifth grade. This tailgate is a chance for these students who may have just met at the beginning of the school year to introduce their families to their new friends and be a start to wonderful relationships. We also have many volunteers and district personnel here tonight helping out. Our district administration is here, too, to meet and

greet the community…and cook the hot dogs,” Geordan said.

Canfield Local Schools PTO member Marci Muckleroy served as chair of the event.

Geordan said another focus of the event it to welcome new families to Canfield.

“The tailgate is also a way to welcome young, new families and give them the true experience of Canfield Local Schools,” Geordan said.

After the tailgate party, attendees headed over to Bob Dove Stadium to the support the Canfield Cardinals varsity football team and cheer them to a victory.

Mill Creek Park put on a Fun Facts Trolley Tour on Aug. 22.

The tour began at Ford Nature Center where naturalist Cody Stoll met with community members.

Stoll, who specializes in geology, gave fun facts to trolley riders as they traveled throughout the park.

“You can’t drive through the park with out seeing dozens and dozens of things to talk about,” said Carol Vigarito, the recreation and education director at the MetroParks.

Gamblers Anonymous, a 12-Step fellowship of compulsive gamblers who want to recover from their gambling addictions, will meet twice this week in the Youngstown-Warren area.

A GA meeting is offered every Friday at Westminster Church, located at 119 Stadium Drive in Boardman, and another is offered every Sunday at Christ Church Presbyterian, located at 3425 Hopkins Road in Youngstown (in Cornersburg). Vigarito said that the facts focused on a range of topics, including natural and historical information.

She explained that this tour differed from usual trolly tours because it was longer, covering the full expanse of the park.

The tour took around two hours, and traveled all the way from Ford Nature Center to New Port and through all the historical and natural interest points in the park.

“You can ride through the park and talk for more than two

hours,” Vigarito said.

The normal trolley tour lasts around 50-60 minutes and travels to the Mahoning River and the mill.

“This tour gives people a great idea about what the park has to offer,” Vigarito said.

This tour was a one time thing, according to Vigarito, who explained that the park puts on a special trolley tour once a month.

Upcoming in October and September, the park with host a picnic in the park trolley tour.

All trolley rides must be preregistered for, which you can do at www.millcreekmetroparks. org.

CMHS Minority Alumni Council awards inaugural scholarships The Cardinal Mooney High School Minority Alumni Council (MAC) has awarded its inaugural scholarships to current CMHS students and graduating members of the Class of 2018.

Open to all students regardless of race or ethnicity, scholarships were awarded based on a thorough application process including personal statement/ essay, community service component and teacher recommendations.

The MAC awarded two laptop/ book scholarships to graduating seniors to provide financial assistance in obtaining the necessary tools to excel at college.

Winners were Kenneth Bledsoe, II a Business Administration student at Hiram College who looks to be a future Law School graduate; and Jordyn Rae Austin, a current college fresh-

man at Bowling Green who is studying education, looking to assist children with disabilities in her future career.

The MAC also awarded two academic achievement scholarships to current Mooney students. Two scholarships in the amount of $1,000 each were given to academically exceptional students demonstrating a record of community service and intent to continue their education at Cardinal Mooney High School. This year’s winners were current senior Alana Bowser and junior Santino “Sonny” Rodriguez.

Taiwanese Chef’s Dinner

The second annual Taiwanese Chef’s Dinner took place at the Mahoning County Career and Technical Center (MCCTC) on Sept. 4. The Youngstown State University Hospitality program co-sponsored the event with MCCTC and all net proceeds from the event will be used to fund scholarships for students in the high school culinary program, who intend to attend the YSU program. The Taiwanese chef’s worked with the MCCTC students during the day showing them the ways of Taiwanese cooking. The students, along with their instructors, Matt Putzier and Christl DeNiro, assisted them in the evening when they provided more than 100 guests, including Youngstown State University President Jim Tressel and Youngstown Mayor Jamael Tito Brown, with a taste of Taiwan. Children bloom at sunflower story time

The Mill Creek Park hosted its monthly Tales for Tots event on Aug. 17 at the MetroParks Farm.

The event, which is offered for 2-3 year-olds, focuses on a different theme each month.

The August theme was sunflowers.

“It’s a chance for them to get out. Parents are always looking for things for them to do,” said Brenda Markley, the MetroParks employee who ran the program.

During the event, the children started by doing some crafts.

The MetroParks supplied coloring sheets of sunflowers as well as pictures using selfsticking noodles for children to complete.

After each child finished their crafts, they all gathered in a circle to read a book.

This month Markley read “This is a Sunflower,” to the children and their parents gathered.

At the end of the event, the children were given a sunflower of their own to take home.

Markley also encouraged parents to take their children to see the sunflower patch growing at MetroParks Farms.

“It’s the start of the socialization and it is also the start of getting more comfortable and aware of things to do in their area,” Markley said.

CVMS seventh-graders claim 16-6 victory The Canfield Village Middle School seventh-grade football team opened their 2018 campaign with a 16-6 victory over the visiting Alliance Aviators.

After a scoreless first quarter, Canfield drove 70 yards in eight plays to take a 8-0 lead. A 25-yard dash by Scottie Eaton gave Canfield a first down at the Alliance 25 and two plays later Tyler Eikert burst 16 yards to the Aviator 4. Fullback Danny Inglis plowed into the end zone from 4 yards out and then hauled in a strike from quarterback Paul Bindas for the 2-point conversion.

On the next possession Lorenzo Rohrbaugh ran down the Alliance signal caller and forced a fumble which was recovered by Eaton at the Alliance 47. Inglis sprinted 47 yards to paydirt on the next play to stretch the advantage to 14-0. Bindas again tossed a pass to Inglis for the conversion and a 16-0 halftime lead. Severe weather forced the second half of the game to be rescheduled for the following day.

up the conversion attempt to keep the the score at 16-6. Both defenses were stout in the second half and Canfield was able to hold on for the win. Inglis led all ball carriers with 88 yards on 11 totes, while Eikert added 64 yards and Eaton added 48 as the seventh-graders piled up 200 yards on the ground.

Coach Donadee cited the stellar play of offensive lineman Alex Hewko, Aj Grohovsky, Rohrbaugh, Vince Luce, Santino Cocca, Nick Beistel and Brady Wilson in being a great factor in achieving the win.

Davidsons mark 50th jubilee at family dinner AUSTINTOWN

The Village Pump in Canfield was the setting for a family dinner July 13 in honor of the 50th wedding anniversary of Mr. and Mrs. Jerry Duke Davidson of Austintown.

The dinner was preceded by a surprise renewal of vows at Ridge Ranch Campground in Warren.

The couple has four children, Jerry (Kelly) Davidson of North Port, Fla.; Rebecca (Steve) Denney of Canfield; Danny R. Davidson of Austintown; and Fred A. Davidson, also of Austintown. Seven grandchildren complete their family.

Mr. Davidson and the former Nancy K. Wright were married July 13, 1968, at Sparta United Methodist Church in Sparta, N.C. Mrs. Davidson retired in 1995 from her work as a medical assistant with Dr. Badjatia in Boardman.

Mr. Davidson was employed for 36 Lordstown. He also is a 32nd degree Mayears as a senior manufacturing engi- son and a member of West Austintown neer at General Motors Fabrication in United Methodist Church.
