Austintown Fitch teacher receives new CPR dummies Thanks to some very generous donors, Austintown Fitch High School science teacher Kelli Anderson now has 20 newly delivered CPR dummies and 200 replacement “lungs” for her Intro to Healthcare classes. The idea sparked last school year when Anderson was thinking about a hands on learning tool she could use for her healthcare class. During her research she came across donorschoose.org. CPR will now be a graduation requirement beginning with the class of 2018. Anderson set up the project last school year at beginning of May and quickly started receiving money. By May 17, she had raised $2,314 from 12 donors.

Open house connects parents and teachers at Austintown Elementary by ZACK SHIVELY zshively@vindy.com
Au st i ntow n E lement a r y School hosted an open house event on Sept. 6 for parents and teachers to meet and discuss the upcoming school year. The event built a base relationship between the parents and teachers. During these meetings, the parents learned the classroom that their child will be learning in over the next school year. The open house also provided parents an easy way to ask any questions they had for the teachers.
The Austintown Elementary PTA worked with the school to help the event run smoothly. Principal Thomas Lenton described the event as a “collaborative effort“ between the PTA and the school. The event gave the PTA the opportunity to sell Austintown Fitch merchandise to raise funds for the association. More importantly, the open house supplied the PTA to talk to potential new volunteers. They staggered the event times so that the first-grade open house ran at 6 p.m. and the second-grade one started at 7 p.m. to accommodate par-

ents with multiple children. The school design works well with this plan as the first grade has their hall on the first floor and the second grade is on the second. Second-grade teacher Dana Patrick gave the parents a brief presentation and met with parents afterward. She printed her presentation as a handout for the parents. She spoke on expectations for both the students and parents for the next school year. She also went over the grade scale, classroom behaviors and important dates to remember. She offered sign-ups for parent-teacher conferences
on her desk as well. She said that she focuses on meeting the parents, setting expectations and presenting the parents with a way to contact her during the open house. She hung a project that her students created in the hallway during the event for parents to see. The school has an open house every year a couple weeks into the school year. The elementary used to host the event when they were separate schools. This marks their fifth open house in their new building that puts all kindergarten, firstand second-grade students in the same building.

A child learns about robitics and programming at Lego WeDo Robots on Aug. 7 at the main library.
Library’s WeDo program allows children to build and program robotics By ZACK SHIVELY zshively@vindy.com
Children in the Main library built and programmed Lego robotic arms through the library’s WeDo program on Aug. 7. The library provided the children with a kit of Legos, a computer and other equipment in order to build a robotic arm designed to grab and lift objects. The kit demonstrated how to build the arm using Legos. The Legos surrounded a mechanical piece. The piece connected to the computer, and the chil-
dren used special software to program the robotic arm to open and close. They also made Lego sculptures that the arm grabbed. L iber ia n Sa ma nt ha Schneider taught the lesson and helped the children. She says the event teaches the children a basic understand of how computing and programming works. More than that, the lesson pushes the children to think critically and use problem solving skills. The children have to figure out what went
wrong if their arm does not work properly. The WeDo program designs the material in their events to be used by children in grades one to five. At this event, the library provided a different area for younger children where they could play with a toy screwdriver and screws to teach them how to use those tools. WeDo hosts events at other library branches in the area. This is the first year of the WeDo program. For more information, visit www.libraryvisit.org.

Car show benefits valley children By ABBY SLANKER neighbors@vindy.com
The Mahoning Valley Olde Car Club hosted its 39th annual Cars in the Park Car Show and Flea Market in Boardman Park on Aug. 6. More than 300 cars were available for the large crowd to view and get an up close look. “We have around 300 cars from all over the state and from out-of-state from such states as Pennsylvania, Michigan and West Virginia,” said Dave Bayowski, a director of Mahoning Valley Olde Car Club and member in charge of registration. Money raised from the car show is used to help several families throughout the year with children with medical conditions and hospice. “We help several families throughout the year. A portion of the money raised, plus donations, benefits a young person with financial help from medical costs. This year’s beneficiary is Brooklyn Hostetter, a 6-yearold from New Waterford diagnosed with Hypoplastic Left Heart Syndrome two days after her birth. Brooklyn faces several heart surgeries, lifetime medications and many other treatments. We are grateful we can help her family with her medi-
cal costs with money we raise today,” Bayowski said. Bayowski said the organization has donated thousands of dollars throughout the last 39 years. “We expect to raise over $3,000 from today’s show. We have donated $70,000 to other causes over the years and about $50,000 to hospice, which we just recently included in our donations, Bayowski said. The car show is a judged event, with about 20-25 members of the club serving as judges. First and second places are awarded in 23 classes, along with a Participant’s Choice Award, a President’s Choice Award and two different Best of Show trophies. The show has several major sponsors, including Snyder’s Antique Auto Parts, Becker Funeral Homes, Udderly Smooth, Flynn Auto Group, Anthony J. Billett Landscape, Valley Insurance Group and WKBN and Fox Youngstown. The event also offered door prizes, food, a 50/50 drawing, a Chinese auction and children’s activities. “We’d like to thank everyone for bringing their cars our and supporting the Mahoning Valley Olde Car Club,” Bayowski said.
