Children enjoy breakfast with an author By ALEXIS BARTOLOMUCCI abartolomucci@vindy.com
Children in the Mahoning Valley had the opportunity to enjoy a breakfast with author Rosemary Wells on July 28 at Stambaugh Auditorium. Invitations were sent out to children who had participated and completed the Summer Discovery program with the Public Library of Youngstown and Mahoning County. The Summer Discovery program is hosted by PLYMC each summer to encourage children to read and participate in different events and programs the libraries host. It serves as the trademark event to bring Summer Discovery to an end. “I’m thrilled to be here, this is a beautiful city,” said Wells, aut hor of t he best-sel l i ng books, “Max and Ruby.” The morning began w ith more than 500 people enjoying a breakfast and spending time with their friends and families. When everyone finished eating, Wells took the stage and spoke to the children about the importance of reading and libraries. Wells has participated in
various educational programs like this around the world. She enjoys traveling and sharing her love of reading with those who also love to read. “We are celebrating these children who have done their summer reading. Children who are read to and who read books and are encouraged to read all the time, are our future readers,” said Wells. Wel l s t a l ked about how reading and being read to help shape the children into becoming successful and future leaders. She showed new research to the audience about how reading is beneficial to development. T here wa s a n a f ter noon seminar w ith Wells for the children who participated in the Summer Discovery program, but didn’t quite complete it. Along with the children, this breakfast with an author event is something the library faculty look forward to each year. Ma ny of t he ch i ld ren a nd fa milies who attended t he event are those families who frequent the libraries and utilize everything the libraries provide.

Tag Day to raise money for Band and Orchestra Neighbors | Submitted
Members of the Boardman High School band and orchestra will be out in the neighborhoods of Boardman on Sept. 23, collecting donations door-to-door. Tag Day has been an annual tradition for more than 40 years. The proceeds from this event help provide many of the unique opportunities the Boardman Band and Orchestra Parents are proud to offer students. In addition to canvassing the neighborhoods, some students will be collecting in front of some local businesses. Traditionally, students give donors a “tag” thanking them for their support. In recent years, they have also used this as an opportunity to distribute information and order forms for our annual citrus fruit sale. Students are driven to their route by adult chaperones. Band students will be dressed in their uniforms and the orchestra students will be dressed in something appropriate since the concert uniforms are not designed for outdoor use.
