St. Michaels Garden Guild will present its fourth annual “An Evening with Five Fantastic Florists” on Sept. 26, at 6:30 p.m. The show will take place in the Family Life Center at St. Michael’s Church in Canfield. Tickets are $20 in advance and $25 the evening of the show. Tickets may be purchased at St. Michael’s office or mail to Garden Guild at St. Micheal’s Church, 300 North Broad St., Canfield OH, 44406, and will be kept at will call. Every ticket is also a chance for one of the five arrangements donated by the floral artists. Homemade refreshments will be served during the show. Additonal floral arrangements will be for sale the evening of the show. Jenny Wehr of “The Willows by Wehr” in Columbiana will teach participants how to make a memorial tribute with fresh flowers. Diane Durrant, the floral designer from Michaels Crafts in Boardman, will demonstrate new and creative ways to decorate this holiday season using silk flowers. Alexa Johnson, “The Flower Girl” from Austintown, will teach everyone how to use live pumpkins and fresh flowers in her floral arrangements. Mark Green, owner of Green’s Floral shop in Hubbard, will demonstrate how to make wedding arragements. Step back in time with the Canfield Historical Society Canfield History Walk: A Step Back in Time is a fundraising event for the non-profit Canfield Historical Society. The History Walk will guide visitors through Canfield’s past, from early pioneer days to the present era. Many Canfield residents will portray historical figures and events such as Marion Fowler, Rev. Joseph Badger, Harry S. Manchester, a Civil War Veteran, Minor Family (one of Canfield’s first settlers) and others. Re-enactments of an action packed bank robbery and the fatal shooting of Canfield Sheriff Cone is being planned. The guided walk around Canfield’s central green will teach young and old about local history, and foster a love of community. The event will take place on Sept. 23 and 30. There will be three tours each day beginning at 4:30 p.m. with the last tour departing at 5:45 p.m, rain or shine. The event will conclude with dinner at Piccadilly Parlour Victorian Tea Room. Ticket price, including dinner, is $40 per couple or $25 individual. Tickets may be purchased by calling the Canfield Historical Society at 330533-3458.

Canfield Schools launch new lunch app The Canfield Local School District is announcing a plan to make it easier for parents and students to find out what’s on the school lunch menu. The district recently launched the YumYummi mobile app, which lists each school’s menus daily, weekly or monthly. It also identifies dishes containing allergens like dairy, eggs, fish, peanuts, pork, shellfish, soy, tree nuts and wheat/gluten. The app, YumYummi, can be downloaded to any smart phone or android device. Students and parents can also vote on and send feedback to their school about their favorite dishes, as well as participate in food taste surveys to have a voice in future menu designs. The district is the first in the area to use the app.

Trunk sales raise funds for worthy causes By ALEXIS BARTOLOMUCCI abartolomucci@vindy.com

St. Christine Parish hosted their second annual Trunk and Treasure sale on Aug. 5 in the St. Christine parking lot. Severa l cars set up their trunks and tables full of items they are hoping goes to a good home. Some of the items are previously used, while others are new. Some vendors sold crafts they handmade themselves. “It started out as a fundraiser for Celebrate and a service project for our kids because we’ve been donating half our proceeds to a worthy cause,” said Kathy Nemergut, coordinator and Celebrate advisor. This year half of the proceeds went to a past Celebrate member who has sarcoma. The sale gives the children who are involved in the church an opportunity the get the feeling of giving to other people. Celebrate is a program that St. Christine Parish runs as part of the youth ministry program. A group of adult advisors meet with a group of high school seniors every week from September to March. Toward the end of the program, there is a three-

day retreat for high school juniors. The juniors are then invited to be part of the Celebrate program for their senior year. St. Christine has done this for 18 years and have had more than 450 students come through from over 25 high schools. “We grow in faith and get to

know each other,” said Nemergut. The church raises money by charging $10 for a parking spot, selling food and raffle tickets. There were several people who registered last year and this year to sell their items. Seniors from the previous Celebrate program

Local chapter of Military Officers Association to meet The Mahoning and Shenango Valleys Chapter of the Military Officers Association (MSVC-MOAA) will host the 2017 Ohio Council of Chapters Convention to take place at the Youngstown Air Reserve Station (YARS) in Vienna on Sept. 22 and 23. This is the first time the state-wide convention will be hosted by the local chapter and the first time it is taking place in the Youngstown-Warren area. The Canfield Village Middle School seventh-grade football team opened their 2017 season with a 24-8 victory over host Alliance. Canfield struck paydirt on its first series, driving 65 yards in seven plays keyed by a 40-yard run by Ryan Schneider to the Aviator 10. Schneider punched it in from a yard out two plays later to give Canfield a 6-0 advantage. Quarterback Broc Lowry found Gavin Ramun in the left corner for the conver-

sion to make it 8-0. A f ter forcing A l lia nce to punt, Canfield drove to the Alliance 20 where Lowry was picked off by an Aviator defender. Lowry was able to run down the interceptor and strip the ball giving Canfield possession at its own 30. Canfield then drove the length of the field with Lowry finishing the drive by racing 12 yards on an option play for six. Lowry then hit tight end AJ Havrilla for the 2-point conversion and a 16-0

halftime lead. Canfield increased their lead to 24-0 when Caden Kohout raced 18 yards through the Alliance defense for the touchdown and Lowry found Jack Fabry for the conversion. Alliance scored in the waning moments for the final score. Coach Donadee cited the strong line play of AJ Murphy, Evan Parker, Michael Howard, Augustine DiMartino and Jimmy Scharrer as a key to the victory.

Canfield Village seventh-grade football defeats Poland The Canfield Village Middle School seventh-graders improved to 2 and 0 on the season with a 26-0 victory over their archrival, the Poland Bulldogs, on Sept. 6 at Bob Dove Field. Canfield struck first when quarterback Broc Lowry raced 44 yards down the left sideline on a fourth and 10 play to give the Cardinals a 6-0 lead. Poland drove deep into Cardinal territory on the next possession only to be turned back by a sack by Aiden Rogers and a key fourth down pass defense by Jeff Demarco in the waning moments of the first half. Canfield’s defense dominated the second half as three Bulldog miscues turned into Cardinal scores. On the first series of the second half, Lowry picked off a wayward Bulldog aerial at the 30. Six plays later, tailback Ryan Schneider dashed five yards to

paydirt and tight end AJ Havrilla made a spectacular grab of a Lowry aerial for the conversion to make it 14-0. Lowry was at it again on the next series picking off a Poland pass near midfield and sprinting down to the Bulldog one yard line. Lowry snuck in from the one to make it 20-0. Poland drove inside the Cardinal red zone midway through the fourth quarter when Lowry stripped a Bulldog runner of the ball and sprinted 92 yards for the touchdown to seal the Cardinal victory. Defensive standouts for the Cardinals included linebackers Dom Marzano, Evan Parker and Schnieder. Coach Donadee cited the stalwart play of defensive linemen Rogers, AJ Murphy, Hunter Kanotz, Havrilla, Mateo Riccardi and defensive backs Nick Smyczinski, Jack Fabry, Lowry and Demarco.

They also have four grandchildren: Ryan, Jason and Evan Sweder of Poland; and Riley Sweder of Hilliard. Mrs. Sweder was a secretary for Erie Lackawanna Railroad in Youngstown and is a member of the Public Employee Retirees Mahoning County Chapter 18. Mr. Sweder was the assistant vice president with Dollar Savings and Trust Mr. Adams also works for Turning Co. for 45 years until retiring in 1997.
