Older dog’s new trick is to find a forever home
By NATALIE WRIGHT nscott@vindy.com
By now, I’m sure you have read about Winston, a 6- or 7-year-old shelter dog who is up for adoption. Winston has been quite a star in our Neighbors Adoptable Pets of the Week colu m n, but so far he still hasn’t fou nd a home and family to call his own. Not mu c h i s known about the coonhound mix WRIGHT p r i o r t o w h e n Crystal Bartlett, Winston’s foster caregiver, found him at a local pound. She recently gave me some insight into the playful older dog’s energetic personality. “Winston is a great boy who is very curious about the world,” she said. “He is a snuggle bug when he calms down.” Bartlett came across Winston in a pound and decided to take him home to foster. She took him to a veterinarian and learned that he had heartworms. Winston has since been treated and is currently waiting on his four-month check up, but the veterinarians assure Bartlett that he is now in great health. Despite being an older gentleman, Winston enjoys running and playing with Bartlett’s other dogs. His age doesn’t slow him
down at all, and believe it or not, there are a lot of pro’s to adopting an older dog. Ac c ord i ng to t he Pen i nsu la Hu m a n e S o c ie t y ’s w e b s i t e (w w w.pen i nsula hu m a ne soc iety.org.), some of WINSTON the top reasons to adopt adu lt animals include: 1. Older animals having more patience and a larger attention span, which can make them easier to teach new tricks to or train. 2. Adult animals are full grown, which means that you know exactly how large or small your pet is going to be. This is frequently hard to guess when it comes to puppies or younger dogs. You will also have a pretty good idea as to the animal’s temperament and personality, as opposed to younger animals who tend to change as they grow. 3. Older a n i ma ls w i l l most likely have already gone through and gotten over their destructive phases and are more likely to be self-disciplined than their younger counterparts. Naturally, all animals are different, but the only way to know for sure if Winston is a match for you is to meet him. If you are interested in meeting or adopting Winston, send a message to Pawz 2 Adopt’s Facebook page or call them at 330-779-1862.
LEAH
Help find Winston a home! He is a coonhound mix, about 70 or so pounds, possibly 6-years-old, with lots of energy. He would like lots of room to run. If you are interested in meeting Winston, call 330779-1862 or send a personal message to Pawz 2 Adopt on its Facebook page. If you would like to adopt Winston, you can fill out an application on the Facebook page or give the shelter a call.
Beautiful Leah is available for adoption. She is getting worried that she may never get out of the shelter. She is sweet and lovable, and is said to be good with cats. She seems to do well with the other dogs and loves people. She would love to have a nice yard to run and play in. If you have a resident dog, bring them to shelter or make arrangements for a home visit. Leah is patiently waiting for her chance at a better life. Message the shelter on its Facebook page, Pawz 2 Adopt, or call 330-7791862 if you can give a home to Leah.

Murder in the Library: “Pasta, Passion and Pistols” The succulent aroma of home cooked pasta is drifting from New York City’s most popular Italian eatery, La Speranza, but something else is heating up the kitchen... coldblooded murder! Restaurateur Pepi Roni has been shot in the back with his own pistol. Tonight his family and friends will gather to pay their respects to poor Pepi, but one of the guests won’t be shedding any tears. You must solve the murder before the killer strikes again. Listen carefully to the suspects, study the crime scene and watch for any unusual circumstances. Only the sleuth with the most correct answers will win the prize. Light refreshments will be served. This event is for adults at the Boardman library on Sept. 29 at 6 p.m.
Bonding with babies and books The Boardman library will host an event for caregivers and their little ones who are 6-23 months every Tuesday in September at 10 a.m. There will be 20 minutes of language enrichment including rhymes, songs and stories, followed by time to play and socialize. The first week of school came to an end for Robinwood Lane Elementary School students on Sept. 1. Kindergarten students spent their first week at Robinwood adjusting to a new school, while the students in fourth grade prepared to spend their final year at a school many of them have been attending since they were in kindergarten. The kindergarten students had a phase-in week, so they only went twice in a week. A group of students would go in Monday, while new groups went on Tuesday and Wednesday before all of the students See SCHOOL, Page 4

Youngstown Orthopaedics adds two new surgeons Youngstown Orthopaedic Associates, Ltd. (YOA), recently announced the addition of two orthopaedic surgeons, Dr. Michael P. Miladore and Dr. K. Seth Kuwik. Both are accepting new referrals. “Attracting two new specialtytrained orthopaedic surgeons to Youngstown Orthopaedic Associates further improves the excellent orthopaedic care provided at our local hospitals and in the community,” said Dr. James P. Jamison, a joint replacement surgeon and partner of YOA. “Dr. Miladore adds expertise in procedures of the hand and upper extremities. He is a Mahoning Valley native and the son of retired orthopaedic surgeon, Dr. Michael J. Miladore. Dr. Kuwik adds to our expertise in knee injuries and total joint replacement. With these additions, our YOA team has grown to 12 surgeons. YOA continues to offer quality therapy and imaging services in support of our surgery practice.” Miladore has spent the last year in a hand and upper extremity fellowship at the State University of New York in Buffalo, N.Y., where he also com-
pleted his residency in orthopaedic surgery. Miladore has been published in international orthopedic journals. He also presented research papers at last year’s annual meetings of the Clinical Orthopaedic Society and the American Association of Orthopaedic Surgeons (AAOS). He was valedictorian of Canfield High School’s 2004 graduating class. He graduated summa cum laude in 2006 from Youngstown State University with a bachelor of science degree. He then completed medical school at Northeast Ohio Medical University in 2010. He is a member of the AAOS. Miladore is married and enjoys golf and working out. Kuwik, a native of the Dayton area, attended college at Lipscomb University in Nashville, Tenn. As an undergraduate he excelled in athletics, particularly baseball, which sparked his interest in knee and sportsrelated injuries. He graduated with a bachelor of science degree from Lipscomb in 2005 after four years as a starter on its NCAA Division I baseball team. He won several honors, including being named an ESPN The Magazine District IV All Aca-
demic All American in 2005. After receiving his doctor of medicine degree in 2010 from the University of Toledo, Kuwik took part in an orthopaedic surgery residency at the State University of New York at Buffalo, N.Y. He recently completed a fellowship in adult knee reconstruction at Lenox Hill Hospital in New York, N.Y. Kuwik also is a member of the AAOS. He is married, has one daughter and enjoys softball, flag football, snorkeling, skiing, traveling and working out. Youngstown Orthopaedic Associates offers complete orthopaedic surgery services. Sixth annual ride to support fallen officers By ALEXIS BARTOLOMUCCI abartolomucci@vindy.com
The Youngstown Fraternal Order of Police Lodge 28 hosted their sixth annual Fallen Officer Memorial Run on Aug. 14, starting at the Boardman Quaker Steak and Lube and ending at Guilford Lake. Those who participated in the memorial run gathered at Quaker Steak on their motorcycles to get ready to ride more than 25 miles to Guilford Lake. The run is to honor those members of the force who have passed away.
Guilford Lake was open to anyone who didn’t have a motorcycle, but still wanted to participate and help support the run. From 1-6 p.m. at Guilford Lake there were Chinese auctions, 50/50 raffles, food and much more for people to take part in. The money raised from the run would be donated back to the FOP 28 Fallen Officers Memorial Fund. The Fallen Officers Memorial Fund helps provide the FOP 28 host different events during the year. This year the money raised is going to be put toward National Police Week in May.
Despite the rain, several people showed up to Quaker Steak to show their support and prepare for the wet journey to Guilford Lake. Not only was the ride to support the fallen officers, it was to celebrate the lives of those currently serving. Rick Alli, President of FOP 28, said the ride was not to honor just the those who serve in Youngstown, but officers from all around the country. The riders said a prayer and listened to a performer sing the national anthem to commemorate the fallen officers before beginning their ride.
Guests started to get their motorcycles lined up for the Fallen Officer Run on Aug. 14 behind the Quaker Steak and Lube in Boardman.

One of the attendees oiled the inside of her mold during the sculptural flower pot class at Fellows Riverside Garden on Aug. 16 so the flower pot mixture would be easier to take out once it dried.
Friendships blossom at flower potting class By ALEXIS BARTOLOMUCCI abartolomucci@vindy.com
Guests got a lesson on how to make sculptured flower pots at Fellows Riverside Gardens on Aug. 16 by Dan Dinsio. Dinsio is an Italian trained sculptor who enjoys teaching others the art of sculpting. Dinsio provided all the materials needed to create hypertufa which is a mixture of peat moss, Portland cement and perlite. “I’m a trained sculptor. I lived in New York for six years and I worked with a sculptor who trained in Italy,” said Dinsio. Dinsio started the class out by introducing himself and talking about his background in sculpting and art. He explained what each material was and how it was going to be used. After giving the guests a quick brief, Dinsio demonstrated how to mix the ingredients to the right consistency then forming it into
one of the bucket molds. The guests watched and asked any questions they may have had before they started to make their own flower pots. There were three different ways a pot could be created. Guests could use their hands to free form a pot, they could put the mixture inside a bucket or they could put the mixture around the bucket. W hen the demonstration finished, everyone made their way to the ingredients to start making the mixture. Water had to be added to the mixture to make the dry ingredients stick together and be able to form around the molds. It was also recommended to oil the surface of whatever mold was going to be used so the mixture would be easier to release once it set. “It takes two weeks for the pots to fully cure,” said Dinsio. After the two weeks, the pots would be dried and used for flowers or any other plants.
