Knitting guild to meet The Western Reserve Knitting Guild will host a special knit-in program on Oct. 3 at 10:30 a.m. at the Austintown library, located at at 600 S. Raccoon Road. Pat Jones will instruct members on making Boo Boo Bears, a child friendly soother. Members are to bring various sizes of knitting needles and assorted yarns. Also members are encouraged to bring a finger food snack to share. The library is not sponsoring or participating in this event. Learn to decipher labels at St. E’s Boardman Learn to read and decipher food labels, and how information on labels relates to health during a Healthy Eating for You: Label Reading presentation at 12:30 p.m. on Sept. 22 in the Willow Room at St. Elizabeth Boardman Hospital, located at 8401 Market Street. Newcomers to have first meeting in September Newcomers of Mahoning Valley is welcoming back new and old members at its first meeting on Sept. 23 at Piccadilly Parlour in Canfield. They will be gathering at 11:30 a.m. with a luncheon being served at 12 p.m. If you have had some changes in your life and would like to meet other women in the community, join them at this next meeting. Bill Griffin, director of the Ernie Hall Aviation Museum, was presented with a chapter flag set by Howland resident Bruce Bille, former Lieutenant in the U.S. Navy and current treasurer of the Mahoning and Shenango Valleys Chapter of the Military Officers Association of America (MSVC-MOAA). Members of the MSVC-MOAA received a guided tour of the Ernie Hall Aviation Museum, which was founded in 2013 to recognize the contributions made by U.S. aviators in advancing aeronautics, particularly those with local ties.

Quarter Auction set The Immaculate Heart of Mary Social Concerns Group will host a Quarter Auction on Oct. 17 in the Parish Center, located at at 4500 Norquest Blvd. in Austintown. Steak Fry on Sept. 26 The St. Vincent de Paul Society is having its annual Steak Fry on Sept. 26 at St. Christine Parish in Youngstown. The event helps to fund the dining hall that serves more than 108,000 meals annually and the food pantry that distributes more than 3,100 boxes annually.

Watkins graduates from Kent State Sarah Elizabeth Watkins of Austintown graduated in May from Kent State University with a Master of Science in nursing-Pediatric Nurse Practitioner Primary Care after obtaining National Board Certification from the Pediatric Nursing Certification Board in July. She will begin practicing as a Pediatric Nurse Practitioner with Akron Childrens Hospital. Watkins obtained her Bachelor of Science degree in nursing from Kent State in 2008 and has worked as an RN for Akron Childrens for more than seven years. She is the daughter of Emil and Annette Grahovac of Austintown, and resides there with her husband, Josh, and two sons, Ross and Michael.

Gallatin to speak at WWII Heritage Society meeting Roy Gallatin of Minerva will share his experiences of World War II in the Pacific at the Sept. 21 meeting of the World War II Heritage Society. The speech will follow a buffet dinner at Ala Carte Catering on State Route 62 in Canfield at 6:30 p.m. Reservations are required and can be made by contacting David Frank at 330-7570515 before Sept. 18.

The Austintown library kicked off a two-week spanned Shark Week, centering all of their normal activities and events to be shark-themed beginning on Sept. 10. Librarian Ashley Potopovich led the first class, Gotta Move Story Time, reading a story about sea life and singing songs with children about sharks. Jessica Rawlison, brought her two daughters, Rebecca and Abigail, to the library to participate in this special two-weeks. The Rotary Club of Austintown hosted a meeting on Aug. 24, where they had guests talk about t heir orga nizat ions’ work. Representing the Fraternal Order of Police from Youngstown were John Prest and Rick Alli, who spoke about the Police Officers Memorial at the end of the South Avenue bridge. The most recent name added was Michael

Hartzell, a Fitch graduate who died in the line of duty. Prest is in charge of the memorial, and needed a new flag for the site, as the winds wear the flags out often. Alli thanked Austintown Rotary for their donation of a flag, which will be returning to Austintown next week as part of the Rotary Flag Lease program. Representing Gateways for Better Living was Bob Wirtz, who mentioned that the agency has 16 group homes for the developmentally disabled in Mahoning County, seven of which are in Austintown. This non profit organization seeks to provide the least restrictive and appropriate environment for those who need this type of care and structured life.

Lions perform eye screenings

On Sept. 2, the Austintown Lions Club performed eye screenings at the 169th edition of the Canfield Fair. The Lions used eye charts, peripheral vision checks and eye pressure checks for glaucoma. There were several referrals to their optometrist of local residents whose eye pressures were not normal. The Lions are proud to have detected these abnormalities to be corrected immediately. Other local Lions Clubs also participated in the eye screenings during the tenure of the fair. Centennial celebration to honor Sister Jerome Sister Jerome Corcora n, founder of Sister Jerome’s Poor, Millcreek Children’s Center and the Youngstown Community School, will be honored at 5:30 p.m. on Oct. 11 at The Georgetown Banquet Center, at a Centennial Celebration of her life and work. Corcoran’s 100th Birthday is April 2016. All proceeds from the dinner will benefit Sister Jerome’s Poor, a tax-exempt nonprofit organization that provides mentoring and financial aid and support to inner-city youth and families. Corcoran has addressed the needs of Mahoning Valley children for more than 70 years. She earned a doctorate from Case Western Reserve University in 1952 and supervised education in the Diocese of Youngstown for 15 years. In 1976, she founded Millcreek Children’s Center, which she directed for 36 years. In 1998, Corcoran, Sister Mary Dunn and Developing

Potential Inc. founded a charter school, Youngstown Community School. She led both schools until 2012. Then, at age 96, Corcoran established Sister Jerome’s Poor under the auspices of the Ursuline Sisters. Her mission is to help working poor families in emergencies and help 12 innercity college students graduate and obtain good jobs. Her program’s success rate among college students is 84 percent, and in the last year Sister Jerome’s Poor has helped more than 400 working poor residents of Youngstown. The dinner is $45 per person. The Rev. Christopher Burke served as officiant. The couple received congratulations afterward at Drake’s Landing in Canfield. They live in Canfield after a wedding trip to Riviera Maya, Mexico. The bride, daughter of Mark and Nancy Stanko of Boardman, is employed as a registered nurse at the Surgical Hospital at Southwoods in Boardman. She obtained an associate degree in nursing from Mercy College of Ohio and an associate degree in surgical technology from the University of Akron. The groom, son of Daniel Sheehan of Youngstown and Penny Sheehan of Poland, is employed as an Ohio intervention specialist for Mahoning County Educational Service Center in Boardman. He obtained a bachelor’s degree in education and a master’s degree in educational administration from Youngstown State University. The bride wore a white Cinderella princess ball gown featuring a strapless sweetheart neckline, rhinestone and crystal beading, a chapel-length train and a net overlay fashioned with glitter. Studio 32 leaps to the top Studio 32 Dance Company finished its competition season with tremendous success. Studio 32 attended four highly competitive group regional competitions, a well-regarded nationals and the World Dance Championships with exceptional results throughout this season. At the first regional competition, the dancers not only achieved overa ll standings throughout the competition, but were awarded with the highest scoring routines of the entire competition. The following dances earned this top honor: “The Shack” in the mini division, “There’s Just Time” in the junior division, “Rock N Roll” in the teen division and “July” in the senior division. Throughout the rest of the regiona l season, Studio 32 continued to earn top honors for their routines. This season the Studio 32 soloists placed in the overalls at both the regional and national level. Placing first overall this season were Katelyn Bacha, Katherine Pomponio, Brittany Sellers, Morgan Baytos, Nicole Schmidt and Hannah Rinehart. Also placing in title divisions this season were Brittany Sellers, Isabella Donadee, Katelyn Bacha and Mackenzie Rusu. Hannah Rinehart was awarded titles at numerous regional competitions, and competed with over 20 participants at the national level, where she advanced to the Title Showdown and received third runner up. The team’s accomplishments

continued at nationals, placing their dancers in the “Battle at the Beach” ultimate showcase, where the routines “There’s Just Time,” “Built Out of Stone” and “July,” were awarded first, second and third place national champions, respectively. Due to Studio 32’s success throughout the season, they earned numerous spots at the World Dance Championships. The team concluded its awardwinning season there, with “There’s Just Time” placing second. Studio 32 Dance Company is entering its fourth season and is excited about the clear advancement of its team. The company is looking forward to the continued achievements of all of its dancers.
