CBC celebrates District Teams By ABBY SLANKER neighbors@vindy.com
The Canfield Baseball Club celebrated the three 2015 District Teams, which all won their District Tournaments this summer, with a picnic at McCune Park on Aug. 29. The Canfield Cardinals 9-10 district baseball team, 10-11 district baseball team and 11-12 district baseball team were all crowned 2015 Ohio District 2 Champions in their respective age group. Canfield Baseball Club President Jack Kucek welcomed the teams, coaches, family and friends to the picnic. “For the first time in Canfield Baseball Club history, all three district teams won their district tournaments in the same year. It all starts in November or December and the kids work very hard through January. During the recreation season, the kids hone their skills and get even better,” Kucek said. Kucek also thanked the coaches and managers for their hard work. “I would also like to recognize and thank all our managers and coaches for the hard work they put in with their respective teams. Also, we wouldn’t be here if not for the moms and dads, and I will include grandparents here, who brought the kids to practices and games and cheered them on,” Kucek said. Kucek then introduced Duke Star, manager of the 11-12 District Team.
“I am very proud of this team. Everyone member of the team made an effort for the team. I am hoping many of them stick with baseball. They are really great kids,” Star said. Kucek introduced Kevin Burdette, manager of the 10-11 District Team, which was the 2015 State Runner-up. “First, I would like to acknowledge the great things these boys have done this year. We have had a lot of fun and have a lot of great memories. They worked hard and I am proud of their effort. They couldn’t have worked any harder, and I thank them for that. And we are proud of all the Canfield teams and their accomplishments,” Burdette said.
Kucek introduced George Beck, manager of the 9-10 District Team and 2015 State Champions. “It’s a great thing for Canfield Baseball to have its three district teams win three district titles in one year. It says a lot about our club and our boys. I learned a lot about this team during the state tournament. When we suffered our one loss, it was a challenge to these boys. You can really see the character of a player when you lose. I could tell these boys couldn’t wait to get back on the field and win. And they did. I am very proud of them,” Beck said. Beck also recognized his coaching staff, saying he could not do this alone. “It’s nice to get all these acco-
lades for winning, but I cannot go without saying I could not have done this alone. I have the three best coaches in Canfield and they are very good friends of mine. Barry Daggett, Larry Slanker and Rick Havrilla were as invested in this team and I was, and like I said, this would not have happened without them. And I also want to say, without the parents, none of this happens,” Beck said. Beck closed in saying Canfield Baseball has a bright future. “I look forward to the future. It gets tougher every year and now we have a big bullseye on our chest. People are starting to realize Canfield can play baseball,” Beck said to loud applause.

Poland library’s Teen Advisory Board members Daniel Pirone, Meganne Evans and Matthew Welton showed off their comic book-making skills on Aug. 13 at Unmask! Comic Book Program with Jerry DeCaire.
Unmask! unveils the upside to summer reading By amanda tonoli atonoli@vindy.com
The Summer Discovery Program for the Public Libraries of Youngstown and Mahoning County saved teens from summer boredom with the variety of numerous fun activities for the summer of 2015. On Aug. 13 the Poland library hosted Unmask! Comic Book Program with Jerry DeCaire presenting Science of the Superhero for the last blowout teen program from Summer Discovery. Librarian Cindy Beach said she was excited for the presentation, not just for the comic book elements, but the presentation also had elements from science and math. “He [DeCaire] shows how different geometric shapes goes
into what he draws,” Beach said. Teens had to opportunity to participate in games, crafts, pictures and more before the arrival of speaker and comic book artist Jerry DeCaire. Meganne Evans, Daniel Pirone and Matthew Welton — leaders of the Teen Advisory Board for the library — came to Unmask to talk to other teens about making comics, answer questions prospective Teen Advisory Board members have and show off their work of art, a graphic novel/webcomic. Meganne Evans, the social media manager and main artist, said between school and various other activities they have to find time to create not only the novel, but also the social media to help promote their creation. “This is basically what we do
in our spare time,” Evans said. Daniel Pirone does most of the scripting and storyline for the novel and prides himself for making what was a hobby into a real, workable piece of art. “I just like how something that I have been doing for six years now is actually going to be a thing that makes sense, instead of having it as an idea,” Pirone said. Evans agreed and said things that she has always thought about are actually being put together for others to be able to view. “Every kid probably has the thought, ‘That would be so cool if that happened,’ or ‘Oh I’ve got this guy in my head like my imaginary friend,’ and now we are kind of putting that out for people to see,” Evans said.

Jared Tincher (75), Vince Giordano(58), PJ Hallof and Tyler Stein (40) celebrated Giordano’s sack of the Greenmen’s quarterback at the game on Sept. 10.
Canfield freshmen victorious over Aurora Greenmen The Canfield High School freshman football team hosted the Aurora Greenmen on Sept. 10 under threatening skies. The lightening was in the form of Canfield’s quick strike offense that struck early and often and the thunder was brought by a defense that did not allow a first down in the first half. By the time the game was halted early in the fourth quarter due to severe weather, the Cardinals had a commanding 34-0 lead. Canfield scored on their first possession when signal caller Glenn Griswold dashed in from 19-yards out. Griswold hit Matt Zaremski on a bubble screen for the conversion and a 8-0 lead. Canfield’s special teams got into
the action on the Greenmen’s next possession. Following a sack by Vince Giordano to force a fourth down, Max Dawson burst through the Aurora line to block the punt and fell on it in the endzone to make 14-0. Tailback Colin Hritz continued the onslaught when he sprinted 60-yards to paydirt early in the second quarter. Griswold hooked up with Zaremski on a 40-yard scoring toss down the right sideline on Canfield‘s next possesion. PJ Hallof was a recipient of a Griswold aerial for the conversion and a 28-0 Canfield lead at the half. Giordano rounded out the scoring when he burst over from 2-yards for the final margin.
