Bill Griffin, director of the Ernie Hall Aviation Museum, was presented with a chapter flag set by Howland resident Bruce Bille, former Lieutenant in the U.S. Navy and current treasurer of the Mahoning and Shenango Valleys Chapter of the Military Officers Association of America (MSVC-MOAA). Members of the MSVC-MOAA received a guided tour of the Ernie Hall Aviation Museum, which was founded in 2013 to recognize the contributions made by U.S. aviators in advancing aeronautics, particularly those with local ties.

Knitting guild to meet The Western Reserve Knitting Guild will host a special knit-in program on Oct. 3 at 10:30 a.m. at the Austintown library, located at at 600 S. Raccoon Road. Pat Jones will instruct members on making Boo Boo Bears, a child friendly soother. Members are to bring various sizes of knitting needles and assorted yarns. Historical program to feature early settlers
OUR TOWN
The Poland Historical Society is sponsoring a “Dressed for the Day” program on Oct. 3 at the historic Poland Presbyterian Church from 1-3 p.m. Presenters will provide a narrated demonstration about the cultural history, clothing and daily life of the early settlers of this area, followed by a tea. The cost is $20 and proceeds will support preservation and education. Call 330-536-6877 to make a reservation by Sept. 26. Seating is limited.
Cruiser Classic 5K – inaugural custom car run/walk seeking participants The inaugural Cruiser Classic 5k Run Walk will take place at the Free Methodist Church in New Middletown in conjunction with the Custom Car Show. The run/walk takes place on Sept. 26. Registration opens at 7:30 a.m. and the race starts at 9 a.m. at the Free Methodist Church, located at 9900 Youngstown-Pittsburg Road in New Middletown. This 3.1 mile race travels along the back roads in a safe and secure location. It’s a trip through a true custom car experience along with custom cars at every turn. The event is being officially timed and mapped by Boardman Second Sole. All proceeds will benefit the STCCC, Springfield Townships Local Food Bank. The start and finish will be at Springfield Township Custom Car Show at the Free Methodist Church. There are seven age groups from the youngest to the oldest with medals being presented to the top three males and females in each age group and the top three runners overall. Shirts are guaranteed for the first 100 registered. Pre-registration is $15 and race day registration is $20. Sunrise of Senior Living of Poland danced the day away to the hawaiian beat at their annual luau on Aug. 13. Residents and staff got to celebrate this special event in the garden with food, fun and social interaction to the wonderful music of Steve Fazzini. Concierge Paula Baldwin said she appreciated the cooperating weather for their special event. “Today was a perfect day because it’s not too hot,” Baldwin said. On Aug. 13 residents of Sunrise of Poland got to enjoy their first picnic outside for the annual Luau. Dressed for the day Members of the Poland Historical Society have planned an exciting afternoon featuring historical authors Mary K. Inman and Louise Pence. Inman and Pence are experts on clothing and everyday life in the late 18th century and early 19th century, and they have coauthored two illustrated paper doll history books. They will provide a narrated demonstration about the cloth-
ing, cultural history and daily life of early settlers to Town One, Range One of the Connecticut Western Reserve which is currently known as Poland. Following their presentation, Poland Historical Society members will host an afternoon tea. The event will take place on Oct. 3 at Poland Presbyterian Church from 1-3 p.m. The cost is $20 per person. The Boardman library hosted the All You Can Read Buffet on Aug. 14. Children were invited to come to the library and either pick out books or bring books of their own to challenge themselves and read for four straight hours. Many brought blankets and pillows to get comfortable while they carried out their challenge. The librarians provided a variety of snacks and food items ranging from pizza and pepperoni rolls to chips and cookies. Librarian Allison Graf participated, as well as headed this event. “This is just such a fun program,” Graf said. Graf said she enjoyed seeing the students challenge themselves at the library – in a fun way. “It’s reading and eating,” Graf said. “Kids come prepared to read for four hours and see if they have what it takes to be able to do it.” Students were welcomed to come and go as they pleased throughout the course of the four hours. The Rev. Christopher Burke served as officiant. The couple received congratulations afterward at Drake’s Landing in Canfield. They live in Canfield after a wedding trip to Riviera Maya, Mexico. The bride, daughter of Mark and Nancy Stanko of Boardman, is employed as a registered nurse at the Surgical Hospital at Southwoods in Boardman. She obtained an associate degree in nursing from Mercy College of Ohio and an associate degree in surgical technology from the University of Akron. The groom, son of Daniel Sheehan of Youngstown and Penny Sheehan of Poland, is employed as an Ohio intervention specialist for Mahoning County Educational Service Center in Boardman. He obtained a bachelor’s degree in education and a master’s degree in educational administration from Youngstown State University. The bride wore a white Cinderella princess ball gown featuring a strapless sweetheart neckline, rhinestone and crystal beading, a chapel-length train and a net overlay fashioned with glitter.
