Audubon Society to hear Bue speak The Audubon Society of Mahoning Valley invites the public to “Bigfoot in Ohio and Beyond” at 7 p.m. on Sept.

25 at the Canfield library. Is the Ivory Billed Woodpecker extinct? Ornithologists search. Does Bigfoot exist?

Researchers investigate. The speaker for this event, Amy Bue, is a mother, teacher, editor, aspiring novelist and a cancer survivor with an enormous bucket list. As far as “Bigfooting” goes, she had her own sighting of something strange near Meander Reservoir in 2012. After several years on her own and with friends, in 2015, the Bigfoot Field Researchers Organization (BFRO) invited her to join as an investigator. She works mostly locally but travels wherever the action is, including as far as the Olympic Peninsula in Washington State. She’s involved with next month’s Bigfoot Day in Beaver Creek State Park.

Tenth annual Danielle Scott Memorial Writing Contest Danielle Scott was a beloved Teen Advisory Board member whom was lost to cancer. The Public Library of Youngstown and Mahoning County is sponsoring the 10th annual Danielle Scott Memorial Writing Contest to honor Danielle and her love of writing. Teens may enter one poem with a theme of their choice. Entries may be submitted online at http://www.libraryvisit.org/teens/danielle or on standard 8.5 inch by 11 inch paper to any public library in Mahoning County Oct. 1-31. If you submit your entry online, make sure you select the writing type (poem) and be sure to include your phone number. Hard copies must be typed. Be sure to include your name, telephone number, grade and school on your entry.

Entries are not returnable. One winner will be chosen and will be awarded a plaque and a monetary prize. All entrants must be in grades 7-12 and either live in or attend school in Mahoning County.

Gamblers Anonymous meetings A meeting of Gamblers Anonymous will take place on Fridays at 7:30 p.m. at Westminster Presbyterian Church, located at 119 Stadium Drive in Boardman. Another G.A. meeting will take place on Sundays at 7:30 p.m. at the Christ Presbyterian Church, located at 3425 Hopkins Road in Youngstown (Cornersburg).

There is no charge for the meetings, although collections are taken up at each meeting to provide for coffee, sugar and creamer, treats and free literature. The average contribution given by members at most meetings is $2. Meetings last about one and a half hours and are both closed meetings, or, you must have suffered from a gambling addiction to attend. The Youngstown-area G.A. groups are friendly and welcoming and established members love to see new members join the fold. They are more than happy to help suffering gamblers and are knowledgeable about how to stay clean from this dreadful disease.

Seniors create crafts for community outreach in Austintown

S e ven women f rom t he Austintown Senior Center are currently working to make a difference as part of the Senior Outreach Services group.

S.O.S. is a group which creates different crafts every few months that they donate to nursing homes in the area.

Group members i nclude Carolyn Miller, the group leader, along with Judy Hack, Joye Lange, Helen Kaniclides, Donna Pence, Christine Schneider and Ellamae Brooks.

“We are all friends we are like a second family to each other,” Hack said.

The group meets twice every week for an hour and a half to work on hand made projects that they distribute to seven different locations, including Austintwoods Rehab and nursing home, Briar Field and Humility House.

Miller said that each nursing home has a general count of their patrons that the group keeps track of for each project.

“When we go in there they are really happy to get them,” Miller said.

The group also spear heads the Austintown Senior Center’s yearly donation to Akron Childrens Hospital in Boardman, where they donate toys around

Christmas.

“We like to be together as a group,” Miller said, “All in all its a nice reach out,” According to Miller the group has been operating since about 2013.

“We like to reach out,” Miller said, “We really love doing this, we aren’t professional crafters.”

“She used to do this all on her own,” Miller said, “When she started coming to the center we all did it as well.”

“This was her dream,” Miller said, “So we just kept doing this project even after she passed away.”

All supplies for the projects is donated to the group or funded by the center according to Jessica Ricker, the technology supervisor at the Austintown Senior Center.

The groups current project began in June. They are creating laminated bookmarks to donate, with the end goal of creating 1,058 by Christmas.

The project involves each member of the group putting bible versus and other quotes on scrap book paper, adding stickers and other decorations, and then taping a calendar to the back before lamenting it.

“We try to pass them out before the new year,” Lange said.

In the past the group has done a variety of projects, including creating pocket crosses and prayer beads.

“We do enjoy this, and the thing that is nice about this is each gal does her own decorating.” Miller said.

Miller continued that the group is always looking for new projects to take on.

“We talk and laugh too, We get crazy and have all kinds of funny stories, and do funny things together,” Miller said, “We love to be together as a group.”

The national theme of Assisted Living Week is “Capture the Moment,” so the students focused on capturing the residents doing activities that they enjoy such as playing the piano, reading and caring for children. Hopewell Theater announces auditions for “Snoopy the Musical” Audition dates for “Snoopy the Musical” will take place on Sept. 30 at 2 p.m. and Oct. 1 at 6 p.m. at the Hopewell Theater, located at 702 Mahoning Avenue in Youngstown.

Performance dates will be Dec. 7, 8, 14, 15 and 16. Rehearsals start on Oct. 22. This place is a series of short scenes with music based on the Charles Schulz’s comic strip “Peanuts.” Parts available include Snoopy, Charlie Brown, Linus, Lucy, Peppermint Patty, Sally and Woodstock (non-speaking part). You must be 16 or older to audition for this show. No parts have been pre-cast.

Memorial ceremony take place on 17th anniversary of 9/11 attacks

Austintown hosted its annual 9/11 memorial ceremony at the Mahoning Valley 9/11 Memorial Park.

This year marks the 17th year anniversary of the Sept. 11 terrorist attack.

Since 2002, the memorial park has hosted a ceremony in honor of those who lost their lives during the attack.

A range of local police and fire officers were present at the event with their vehicles.

The Austintown Fire Depart-

ment even used two trucks to display a large American flag during the event.

The Catholic War Veterans from Youngstown Post #1292 kicked off the event with a volley.

Then Father Richard Lambert, from St. Mary’s Church led those gathered at the event in an “Our Father.”

The Austintown Fire Department Honor Guard then performed the posting of the colors.

Boccieri discussed the importance of never forgetting what happened 17 years prior.

“It’s was historical, and we hold that memory every day,” he said.

The Fitch concert choir also performed.

Representatives from the American Legion and Austintown fire and police departments helped perform the ceremony.

“We are all gathered here as a community to honor the day and those who lost their lives to keep others safe,” Davis said.

The Mahoning Valley 9/11 Memorial Park is located at 1055 South Raccoon Road and is open year-round.

According to park curator Pay Connolly, it is run solely by volunteers and they are always looking for new people to help.

Community members are welcome to purchase memorial bricks that support the park, or to volunteer their time by contacting Connolly at 330-7182345.

Boys varsity golf tallies second lowest score this season The Austintown boys varsity golf team beat Warren G. Harding 173-221 on Sept. 13. This win was the team’s second lowest total of the year. Dom Kapics and Nate Cene led the way carding 40’s, followed by Dylan Wrona - 46, Dylan Roby - 47, Cory Stien - 51 and Jacob Lanterman posted his lowest nine hole score as a Falcon with 47.

The team now has more victories than all of last year.

Girls varsity soccer ties; JV sees victory The girls varsity soccer team tied Warren G. Harding 2-2 on Sept. 17. The Falcons’ Katlyn Klasic scored twice in the opening half with assists from Cadence Krpicak and Abby Knight and the team carried a 2-0 lead into halftime. The Falcons controlled possession for much of the match leading to more than 20 shots, but failed to score in the second half. Warren Hard-

ing took advantage of their opportunities and scored two late goals to secure the tie. The junior varsity girls won their match by a score of 5-0. Miranda Ashley (with an assist from Mya Kaschak) opened the scoring with a goal in the first minute. Moira George tacked on two more goals late in the first half with assists from Mikayla Ellis and Miranda Ashley to take a 3-0 halftime lead. Car, Truck and Bike show set for Sept. 22 Neighbors | Submitted

Mary’s Pink Ribbon Racers Relay for Life Team will host its second annual benefit Car, Truck and Bike Show from 11 a.m. until 3 p.m. on Sept. 22 at Austintown Eagles, located at 1655 S. Raccoon Road (across from Wedgewood Pizza).

Registration is $5 per vehicle. There is free admittance for spectators. Goody bags will be availabe for the first 50 registrants. The event will feature trophies, door prizes, raffles, 50/50, food and drinks, an all-day D.J. and featured vehicles: The Dukes of Hazzard’s General Lee and Eleanor from the movie “Gone in 60 Seconds.” Proceeds will benefit the American Cancer Society. In the event of rain, the date will be moved to Sept. 23.

Fitch girls soccer has loss to Hoover The Austintown Fitch High School girls varsity soccer team fell to Hoover 4-1 on Sept. 15. The Falcons quickly fell behind by a score of 3-0 before settling in and trying to get back into the match. The score remained 3-0 at the half. Abby Knight scored the Falcons lone goal with a free kick in the second half to close the gap but the Falcons surrendered goal number four later in the match to end the day with a 4-1 loss. The Davis Family YMCA is accepting entries for the annual But I Know What I Like art show on Sept. 28 from 10 a.m. until 5 p.m. and Sept. 29 from 10 a.m. until 3 p.m. at its McClurg Road facility. Library celebrates furry friends with DIY craft

In celebration of National Dog Day, the Austintown library hosted a make your own dog toy event.

This is the third year that librarians Renee Beverly and Mallory Wiand have hosted the event.

“We both love dogs, and we have them, so this is something we both do all the time,” Beverly said.

Beverly has a golden retriever named Bailey and Wiand has a beagle-bull dog named Sophie.

“Basically we like dogs so we tried to come up with a way to make cheap toys for our dogs, so I discovered it and I showed it to her,” Beverly said.

The craft is made entirely from reused materials.

Wiand and Beverly explained to the group that anyone can recreate the craft at home using old T-shirts.

“Its a user-friendly, cheap way to not have to spend money,” Beverly said.

The craft used strips from the torso of old T-shirts tied together to make a toy.

Wiand explained to the group how to create different sized toys by cutting the fabric strips into different size pieces.

Once all four pieces of fabric are tied together Beverly and Wiand showed those gathered how to weave them together to create tight knots.

Participants spent two hours learning how to weave the fabric to create the toy.

Beverly said that anyone who was not interested in keeping the toy could give them to her to donate to local dog shelters.

“I tend to donate them a lot, I like to give back and its such a fun easy thing to do,” she said.

Boys varsity golf finishes in fourth The Austintown boys varsity golf team finished in fourth place at the AAC championships. The team posted their best 18 hole total of the season. Dom Kapics led the way and finished third out of 30 players.

Dylan Roby carded his best 18 hole score of the year with a 93. Other scores for the team were Nate Cene (93), Cory Stien (97) and Dylan Wrona (108).

ty soccer team defeated Boardman 5-2 on Sept. 11. Fitch went up 1-0 to start the game when Nick Mortaro found the net off a Cam Ashley assist. Boardman tied it up just before the half when Trevor Boggess crossed to a heading Tommy Fryda.

Both teams battled through much of the second half until Fitch scored another one to go up 2-1 on a Keanu Ruiz goal (Zack Glavic assist). The Falcons added two more (Andrew Lecsak from Alec Debaldo, Glavic from Alec Herman) before the Spartans could answer (Ryan Johnson).

Fitch added one more goal (Ashley from Herman) to make it 5-2.

Boardman keeper Egan Hare had two saves while his Fitch counterpart Carlo Walters had four.

After a scoreless first half, Jacob Tatabe hit a curling left footed free kick to give the Raiders the win. Raiders dominated possession and shots on goal. Harding keeper George Berzonski had five saves to Fitch’s Carlo Walters three. The junior varsity team won with a score of 8-0.

The Mill Creek Park hosted its monthly Tales for Tots event on Aug. 17 at the MetroParks Farm.

The event, which is offered for 2-3 year-olds, focuses on a different theme each month.

The August theme was sunflowers.

“It’s a chance for them to get out. Parents are always looking for things for them to do,” sa id Brenda Ma rk ley, t he MetroParks employee who ran the program.

During the event, the children started by doing some crafts.

The MetroParks supplied coloring sheets of sunflowers as well as pictures using selfsticking noodles for children to complete.

After each child finished their crafts, they all gathered in a circle to read a book.

This month Markley read “This is a Sunflower,” to the children and their parents gathered.

At the end of the event, the children were given a sunflower of their own to take home.

Markley also encouraged parents to take their children to see the sunf lower patch growing at MetroParks Farms.

“It’s the start of the socialization and it is also the start of getting more comfortable and aware of things to do in their area,” Markley said.

Sprout Club unearths fossil knowledge

Mill Creek Park hosted its monthly Sprout Club event on Aug. 16 at Fellows Riverside Garden.

The event is offered for children who are 3-5 years-old.

“It’s a fun way to introduce young kids to the different aspects of nature,” said Cody Stall, who ran the Aug. 16 event.

Stall said she was filling in for Lynn Zocolo who usually runs the program.

During each event, children are introduced to a specific aspect of nature, and go more in depth into the topics.

The children read a related book with the MetroParks employee, do an activity and enjoy a snack.

This month, the theme of the event was dinosaurs.

The children read “Dinosaurs Dance” along with Stall, dancing along to the instructions in the book.

After reading, parks employees passed out play dough and told children to create “fossils” by pressing plastic dinosaurs into the play dough and seeing what shapes it made.

The children then drew the shapes they made on the board.

Stall explained to everyone that their “fossils” were different because all of the dinosaurs were different.

Stall, who has a degree in geology, said she was particularly qualified to teach this course, which is why she was asked to substitute.

“I’m going to teach you all the cool things I know,” she said to the group.

She explained the differences between herbivores and carni-

vores, and how scientists can tell what type a dinosaur is by their teeth, the number of toes they have and how many legs they use to walk. She also explained that humans were neither of those things, but were
