Audobon Society to hear Bue speak The Audubon Society of Mahoning Valley invites the public to “Bigfoot in Ohio and Beyond” at 7 p.m. on Sept. 25 at the Canfield library. Is the Ivory Billed Woodpecker extinct? Ornithologists search. Does Bigfoot exist?

Researchers investigate. The speaker for this event, Amy Bue, is a mother, teacher, editor, aspiring novelist and a cancer survivor with an enormous bucket list. As far as “Bigfooting” goes, she had her own sighting of something strange near Meander Reservoir in 2012. After several years on her own and with friends, in 2015, the Bigfoot Field Researchers Organization (BFRO) invited her to join as an investigator. She works mostly locally but travels wherever the action is, including as far as the Olympic Peninsula in Washington State. She’s involved with next month’s Bigfoot Day in Beaver Creek State Park.

Cardinal Mooney to host seventh- and eighth-grade parent night Cardinal Mooney High School will host a seventh- and eighth-grade parent night on Oct. 14 from 6-8 p.m. in the school auditorium, located at 2545 Erie St, in Youngstown. Prospective families are encouraged to attend to learn about block scheduling, financial

assistance and admissions. Current CMHS students and parents will present on the benefits of a Mooney education. This is an all ages event as special seasonal activities will take place in the school gymnasium for children in grades kindergarten through sixthgrade. Newcomers club to meet on Sept. 26 The Newcomers of Mahoning Valley will host their first meeting at A la Carte Restaurant in Canfield on Sept.

Tenth annual Danielle Scott Memorial Writing Contest Danielle Scott was a beloved Teen Advisory Board member whom was lost to cancer. The Public Library of Youngstown and Mahoning County is sponsoring the 10th annual Danielle Scott Memorial Writing Contest to honor Danielle and her love of writing. Teens may enter one poem with a theme of their choice. Entries may be submitted online at http://www.libraryvisit.org/teens/danielle or on standard 8.5 inch by 11 inch paper to any public library in Mahoning County Oct. 1-31. If you submit your entry online, make sure you select the writing type (poem) and be sure to include your phone number. Hard copies must be typed. Be sure to include your name, telephone number, grade and school on your entry. Entries are not returnable. One winner will be chosen and will be awarded a plaque and a monetary prize.

All entrants must be in grades 7-12 and either live in or attend school in Mahoning County.

Libraries remain open for holiday All PLYMC libraries will be open on Columbus Day, Oct. 8.

Gamblers Anonymous meetings A meeting of Gamblers Anonymous will take place on Fridays at 7:30 p.m. at Westminster Presbyterian Church, located at 119 Stadium Drive in Boardman. Another G.A. meeting will take place on Sundays at 7:30 p.m. at the Christ Presbyterian Church, located at 3425 Hopkins Road in Youngstown (Cornersburg). There is no charge for the meetings, although collections are taken up at each meeting to provide for coffee, sugar and creamer, treats and free literature.

The average contribution given by members at most meetings is $2.

Meetings last about one and a half hours and are both closed meetings, or, you must have suffered from a gambling addiction to attend. The Youngstown-area G.A. groups are friendly and welcoming and established members love to see new members join the fold.

They are more than happy to help suffering gamblers and are knowledgeable about how to stay clean from this dreadful disease.

JWL of Canfield hosts 49th annual Fall Market

The Junior Women’s League of Canfield hosted its 49th annual Fall Market on the Green on Sept. 15, with more than 200 vendors set up spanning the entire Green. Peggy Rowe served as Fall Market chairperson.

The vendors offered a variety of items, including fall, winter, holiday and sports-themed crafts, homemade baked goods, pet items and supplies, personalized items, jewelry, fruits and vegetables, flowers, spirit wear and antiques and collectibles.

Several service organizations were also on hand to inform visitors of their purpose and services.

The Fall Market is a group effort among the members of the Junior Women’s League of Canfield and is the organizations largest annual fundraiser.

Members of the Junior Women’s League of Canfield were on hand all day to help, including selling 50/50 raffle tickets.

Several groups, such as the Boys Scouts, Y-Teens, CHS speech and debate team, CHS robotics club and CVMS seventh- and eighth-grade football cheerleaders, were on hand throughout the day to volunteer their time helping Junior Women’s League of Canfield members.

This year, the Junior Women’s League of Canfield teamed with the Rose Mary Flanagan Ovarian Cancer Foundation to raise ovarian cancer awareness.

September is ovarian cancer awareness month and the organization decorated the Green with teal ribbons and bows to support the foundation.

“We teamed up with Rose Mary’s daughter, Erin, to support the foundation she started in her mother’s name. With Mayor Duffett’s permission, we decorated the trees and gazebo on the Green to show our support,” said Tina Marie Gasior, Junior Women’s League of Canfield president.

donated to various local community charities and organizations, including the Sojourner House, Operation Blessing of Canfield, Silver Linings Cancer Fund, HOBY Youth Leadership, Canfield Community Care Net, Guardian Angels Medical Service Dogs, Canfield Police Department and First Responders First.

“We donated to the Canfield Police Department and they used the donation to buy a chip finder to help with lost dogs and because of our donation, they have been able to reunite several dogs with their owners. We also donated to the First Responders First, which provides training and supplies such as tourniquets and rescue tools for first responders so they can administer medical aide.

We also created the Nancy Dove Character Award in memory of Nancy, who was a member of our organization, for one high school student,” Gasior said.

Glasior said the organization loves what they are able to do for others.

“We love what we do. Our mission is to give back to our community. We let people know we truly appreciate them. Just recently, on Sept. 11, we brought

Troop 25, Boy Scouts of America chartered to Canfield United Methodist Church in Canfield, recently announced the awarding of the Eagle Scout Award to 179th Eagle Scout Tanner Stephen Tsvetkoff.

Tsvetkoff’s Eagle Scout Award will be presented at a special Eagle Scout Court of Honor on Sept. 26 at Canfield United Methodist Church, located at 27 S. Broad St. in Canfield. He has earned many awars in his time in the Scouts and is also a senior at Canfield High School. His Eagle Scout service project was designing, planning, fundraising, constructing and installing six park benches for the Canfield Township Park.

The MetroParks Farm ran its annual petting zoo during the Canfield Fair in the Old McDonald Barn.

The farm was closed during the fair, as many of the staff and animals were moved across the street for a unique petting zoo experience.

“Its a lot of the animals that we have at the farms regularly,” said Bill Gilmore.

The petting zoo featured baby animals, including kids, calfs and chicks from the farms.

“It’s so that people can get their hands on the animals,” Gilmore said.

There was also an assortment of adult animals including goats, cows and a range of birds including guinea.

Gilmore said that the farms were lent a few animals for the petting zoo as well, including an alpaca and a miniature horse.

The petting zoo is unique because instead of a traditional petting zoo in one enclosed fence, each set of animals were in their own area.

This allowed fair attendees to walk through at their leisure, with as many people as the barn could hold, instead of taking turns and having a limited time.

The petting zoo also allowed guests to pick up and hold baby chicks, ducks and bunnies.

“We’ve being doing this a long time and the animals hold up really well,” Gilmore said.

“A lot of people don’t realize we have the farm,” Gilmore said.

He explained that a lot of people aren’t aware that these

animals live right across the street, and are open to the public throughout the year.

“What they are doing here today they can do almost any day by just coming to the farms,” Gilmore said.

The Canfield Dollar General is celebrating its five-year anniversary on Sept. 28, and store manager Sherri Lupole would like to thank the Canfield community for its support.

“I would like to thank Canfield for ingratiating us and welcoming us into the Canfield community and supporting all our charity collections and causes,” Lupole said.

According to Lupole, the store has supported Operation Blessing throughout the years with several collections and petting zoo fundraisers, along with other organizations.

“We’ve had food drives, a collection of non-food items and school supplies drives for Operation Blessing over the past five years and we appreciate the support for these causes we

have received from the community. We have also held petting zoo fundraisers for Operation Blessing. The store has also donated money to the Canfield Police Department to buy candy for the children at Halloween and we have supported other community causes and organizations,” Lupole said.

The store will host a fifth anniversary celebration from1-3 p.m. on Sept. 28. The celebration is open to the public and cake will be served.

Sept. 28 is also Lupole’s last day at the Canfield store. She is transferring to the Apple Creek, Ohio, store.

“I have enjoyed my time here in Canfield and I’m sure the new store manager will continue to support the causes and organizations we have helped in the past five years,” Lupole said.

The Canfield High School boys basketball program will be hosting its ninth annual Cardinals’ Basketball Youth Skills Academy in preparation for the 2018-19 basketball season. Embroiderer’s Guild brings Christmas to August

On Aug. 21, the Embroiderer’s Guild of Youngstown hosted a create a holiday tree design event at the Poland library.

The event, which was run by guild member Jean Chamberlin, ran from 10 a.m. until 12 p.m.

Ruth Ebert, the guild’s outreach chairman, said that the group is putting on one event every month at various locations.

All supplies for the event are donated through the Embroiderer’s Guild.

Members of the guild also

volunteer to assist in the teaching of the craft at the events, Ebert said.

During the Aug. 21 event, six members of the guild, including Ebert and Chamberlin, were available to assist participants. These members included Janis Finbeechie, Judy Power, Linda Gwinnup and Sue Robinson.

Ebert said the event started with an introduction by Chamberlin about the craft, and instructions on how to begin.

Each participant was also given a hand out with instructions for the craft to follow at their ow n pace. Each table

then began the craft on their own, with volunteers walking around to assist throughout.
