Dough House Cookies opens at Canfield library By ABBY SLANKER neighbors@vindy.com
Dough House Cookies, located inside the Canfield library, hosted a grand opening on Sept. 18. TaRee J. Avery, owner and operator, returned to her roots in Youngstown after running a successful cookie business in Nashville. “My fa m i ly is here i n Youngstown. I wanted to come back and be a part of the tremendous revitalization I saw here when I returned. My family came on-board with support. My mom and dad and sister help me with my business. It’s all us. I’m the only baker,” she said. After graduating from Geneva College with a desire to work in human services and eventually open a youth home, Avery moved to Nashville. While working in this field for several years, she also became an individual recording artist. “I have always loved music, and living in Nashville gave me the perfect opportunity to explore my options in the music business. I went on tour and released several songs,” Avery said. W hile working in the human services field, Avery became burnt out and was frustrated with the lack of resources available to her and her clients.
That’s when she started ‘stress baking.’ “After several years in my field, I just became so frustrated with the system and having no resources to help me or my clients. I turned to baking to help with my stress. I have been baking since I was 8-years-old and grew up baking with my mom and grandma with my grandma’s cookie recipes. My roommates at the time told me my cookies were so good that they would buy them and I should sell them to other people. I decided to book one event, and see how it went. Well, we sold out the event and everything changed,” Avery said. Avery said she feels she got everything she needed from her time in Nashville. “I had always baked, but not professionally. In Nashville, there are tons of start up businesses, but I wanted to come home to make it happen. I needed my family. I do feel I got everything I needed to be successful from my time Nashville and that’s very important to me,” Avery said. The Canfield library is happy Avery and Dough House Cookies are on board at their location. “The library is happy to have Dough House Cookies join us in our Canfield location,” said Interim Executive Director Su-
san Merriman. “Dough House presents a unique take on cookies, blending traditional cookies with cookies of new and interesting flavors. We hope our library patrons will stop by and enjoy a cookie.” Avery and the library connected through the Youngstown Business Incubator, Women in Entrepreneurship program, when the business spot in the Canfield library became vacant. Avery enrolled in the program and found help with financial information, creating a business plan and other areas she felt she needed. Avery said the Women in Entrepreneurship program was valuable in that it provided a network and connected her w it h “li ke-minded women with whom I’ve created lasting friendships.” She noted, “There are unique challenges for women entrepreneurs” and her time with the Women in Entrepreneurship program strengthened her confidence and knowledge. Avery explained the meaning behind the name Dough House Cookies. “Dough is a play on cookie dough. House is my connection to home. I am a home baker and it also takes me back to baking cookies at my grandma’s house. I want to pass that feeling along with my cookies. I would also like people to know that we are
not a bakery. We don’t make cakes or other things. We just focus on cookies from my grandma’s recipes and that means home to me,” Avery said. Dough House Cookies offers traditional cookies and seasonal favorites. “I offer traditional cookies and I provide unique flavor options. I aim to convey the feeling of ‘home.’ I will offer seasonal cookies, such as an upcoming fall selection using apple, maple and pumpkin flavors. I love to work with what I call flavor development,” Avery said. Dough House Cookies are also available at the Austintown Farm Market, Howland Farm Market, Hubbard Farm Market and Idora Farm Market. The company also takes orders with a dozen minimum and provides local delivery of 25 miles and will ship out of state. The Canfield library location will be open from 9 a.m. until 5:30 p.m. Monday through Saturday. For more information, visit doughhousecookies.com.

Mill Creek takes patrons on tour through park by ZACK SHIVELY zshively@vindy.com
Mill Creek Metroparks offered a trolley ride through different areas of Mill Creek Park to the public on Aug. 25. Tour guide Lynn Zocolo gave those on the tour interesting facts about the park as the trolley traveled from area to area. The tour started at Fellows Riverside Garden, looped around the park and ended back at the garden. Mill Creek designed the tour as a way for members of the park to notice the changes in season near the end of summer. The tour started at the garden, headed to Lake Cohasset, in front of the Wall Garden, into the Lily Pond area, by the Birch Hill Cabin, around Pioneer Pavilion’s lot, over the suspension bridge, near Lanterman’s Mill, past Cascade Falls and entered the drive way leading to Judge Morley Pavilion’s parking lot before looping back around. Zocolo opened the trolley ride with some trivia about the general history of the park. Her first couple of questions revolved around Fellows Riverside Garden since the tour began there. For example, Elizabeth Fellows donated the land to Mill Creek park in 1958 to create a community garden. Then, her trivia dealt with Volney Rogers, the

park’s founder. The trivia became about each area the trolley passed rather than the general history of the park. For instance, while at the Lily Pond, Zocolo explained where the Lily Pond’s nickname, “The Goldfish Pond,“ originated. According to the story, a police officer donated five goldfish to Volney Rogers for the newly opened pond. The trolley ride provided beautiful sights for the riders. Zocolo showed the tour group notable nature points in
the park, but occasionally, the trolley stopped for unplanned sights, such as a couple deer running through the woods and to look at the oldest continually lived in house in Youngstown, which resides next to the park. The group saw other wildlife on the tour as well, including squirrels and a heron. Other information and history about Mill Creek can be found on their website, millcreekmetroparks.org, or on Zocolo’s other tours. She plans to host tours more often in 2018.

Doctors rock out for good cause by ZACK SHIVELY zshively@vindy.com
Two Canfield doctors recorded a new album and a portion of the proceeds are going directly to the Second Harvest Food Bank of the Mahoning Valley through September. Doctors Zafar Sheik and Asif Khan make up the band Spy Convention. The two met at their children’s school function in 2014. Two years after starting this project, they wrote and recorded their first full length album, “Tidal.“ The band teamed up with the Second Harvest Food Bank of the Mahoning Valley to donate some of the proceeds of their album sales to the food bank until the end of September. They chose to conclude in September because that month is Hunger Action Month. Khan said they “hope to help as many families as we can.“ The two doctors bring their own inf luences to the project. Sheik, an ophthalmologist, enjoys indie music like The National, and Khan, an allergist-immunologist, listens to mostly rock music, such as Rush. However, the two have a musical overlap that they used to define their sound: 80s music. The band creates pop music with a definite taste of 80s pop, mixed with their own inf lu-
ences, as evidenced by Sheik’s singing style that is reminiscent of The National’s Matt Berninger. Both doctors have brought their own musical histories to the band. Sheik comes from a musical family and his sister was in the music scene as well. He sings and plays keyboards for Spy Convention. Khan has played in a couple bands in New York City. He drums and plays guitar on the album. The Second Harvest Food Bank of the Mahoning Valley is, as stated on t heir website, a member of Feeding America and distributes food to a number of organizations throughout the tri-county area, including “church pantries, homeless shelters and soup kitchens, shelters for battered women and after-school programs.” According to their research, one in six people in the Mahoning Valley struggle with hunger. Spy Convention’s “Tidal“ can be purchased on Bandcamp at spyconvention.bandcamp.com for $7 or more, on CD Baby at store.cdbaby. com/cd/spyconvent ion 2 for $9 or on iTunes at itunes. apple.com/us/album/tidal/ id1249608292 for $9.90.

Easy Street closed out Live! At the Morley series with a blast By ZACK SHIVELY zshively@vindy.com
Easy Street played a concert at the Judge Morley Pavilion on Aug. 16 as a part of Mill Creek’s Live! At the Morley summer concert series. The band covered a number of hit songs, starting with “Route 66“ by Nat King Cole. The audience got to know the Easy Street Little Big Band led by musical director Jeff Sanders and the groups’ five singers, Maureen Collins, Todd Hancock, James McClellan, Colleen Chance and Natalie Sprouse, over the course of the night. Most of the songs were oldies hits from the 50s and 60s and included both pop and country songs. T he c r owd enjoy e d t he show that Easy Street gave them. A older couple danced during the opener and children ran and danced in front of the stage for the majority of the show. Local artist Leanne Binder received a warm welcome from the audience. When Hancock and the band started Johnny Cash’s “Folsom Prison Blues,“ the crowd happily clapped along. The group also played songs like “Love Me Tender“ and “Heartbreak Hotel“ to commemorate the 40th anniversary of Elvis Presley’s death.

Natalie Sprouse belted out “At Last” by Etta James as a part of Easy Street’s Live! At the Morley event in Mill Creek on Aug. 16.
The Little Rascals came on stage and sang about halfway into the show. The Little Rascals are a group of children that Collins works with at the Adler Arts Academy Studios. These workshops run throughout the summer and end with performance at the Live! At the Morley concert. A single boy sang the first song, “Everywhere Man“ by Johnny Cash. The other children joined him on the chorus. The Little Rascals also sang “Fight Song“ by Rachel Platten and “Walking on Sunshine“ by
Katrina and the Waves. Easy Street Productions has played the final concert of Mill Creek’s Live! At the Morley every year since the event started in 1994. Collins and Hancock founded Easy Street Productions in 1988 and have put on Broadway shows such as “Annie“ in Edward W. Powers Auditorium. They will be putting on “Peter and the Starcatcher“ on Nov. 10-12 at DeYor’s Ford Family Recital Hall. Live ! At t he Morley runs throughout summer every year.

Bob Evans Restaurant, located at 7347 California Avenue in Boardman, was recognized by the Mahoning Valley Chapter, Sons of the American Revolution on Aug. 18 for it’s twice daily recital of the Pledge of Allegiance. The practice of reciting the pledge dates back to September of 2011. Employee, Sally Canavan approached her manager, Fred Griffin about the idea as a way to honor her World War II veteran father, and all veterans. It has been a staple of the restaurant ever since, according to Assistant Manager Vicky Robinson. Phil Bracy, Chapter President, was pleased to award this certificate to such a business. Pictured are, from left, Jim Alexander - chaplin, Jonathan Guerrier - treasurer, Vicky Robinson - assistant manager, Phil Bracy - chapter president, John Opre - vice president and Scott Davis - secretary.

Canfield Schools launch new lunch app The Canfield Local School District is announcing a plan to make it easier for parents and students to find out what’s on the school lunch menu. The district recently launched the YumYummi mobile app, which lists each school’s menus daily, weekly or monthly. It also identifies dishes containing allergens like dairy, eggs, fish, peanuts, pork, shellfish, soy, tree nuts and wheat/gluten. The app, YumYummi, can be downloaded to any smart phone or android device. Students and parents can also vote on and send feedback to their school about their favorite dishes, as well as participate in food taste surveys to have a voice in future menu designs. The district is the first in the area to use the app.
Zion Lutheran Church to re-dedicate and ring historic church bell Zion Lutheran Church will be rededicating and ringing the historic church bell on Sept. 24 - two days short of its 102 birthday. The bell was installed at Zion’s first building, at the southwest corner of Tippecanoe and Canfield Roads in September of 1915, and was rung for the first time on September 26, 1915. The bell will be rung for the first time by Sarah Matkoskey because the bell restoration was paid for by her, and her family, and others in memory of her late husband, Charles. The new platform recently built for the bell was paid for by memorial funds given by Anna Mae and Roy Wiff Jr. in memory of Roy Wiff and memorial funds given in memory John Bokesch. For more information about the bell ringing, contact Zion at 330-792-4046.

Back pain and Sciatica workshop to be Sept. 30 The Center for Physical Health will be hosting a workshop on Sept. 30 at
9 a.m., focusing on managing back pain and sciatica. The class will be led by Marybeth Romeo, Licensed Physical Therapist and owner of the Center for Physical Health, which is located at 4137 Boardman-Canfield Road, Suite 104, in Canfield. The Managing Back Pain and Sciatica Workshop will focus on helping those in the Valley who suffer from pain in the back and legs when they do everyday activities. Back Pain and sciatica can be a result of a traumatic injury, poor form when exercising, or even just sleeping or moving in the wrong way. Many people refuse to deal with back pain in favor of denial, however, this workshop seeks to help naturally relieve the symptoms of back pain and sciatica, as well as offer an opportunity to help treat the cause of the problem overall. The cost of the Back Pain and Sciatica Workshop is free for the community, and registration can be done over the phone at 330-286-3850 or by email at office@ centerforphysicalhealth.org. Registration should be made before Sept. 28; however, people will be admitted at the door pending available space. Attendees will walk away from this workshop with a working knowledge of how to naturally relieve back pain for good, as well as an understanding of the benefits of physical therapy.

Car show benefits Valley children By ABBY SLANKER neighbors@vindy.com
The Mahoning Valley Olde Car Club hosted its 39th annual Cars in the Park Car Show and Flea Market in Boardman Park on Aug. 6. More than 300 cars were available for the large crowd to view and get an up close look. “We have around 300 cars from all over the state and from out-of-state from such states as Pennsylvania, Michigan and West Virginia,” said Dave Bayowski, a director of Mahoning Valley Olde Car Club and member in charge of registration. Money raised from the car show is used to help several families throughout the year with children with medical conditions and hospice. “We help several families throughout the year. A portion of the money raised, plus donations, benefits a young person with financial help from medical costs. This year’s beneficiary is Brooklyn Hostetter, a 6-year-old from New Waterford diagnosed with Hypoplastic Left Heart Syndrome two days after her birth. Brooklyn faces several heart surgeries, lifetime medications and many other treatments. We are grateful we can help her family with her medical costs with money we raise today,” Bayowski said. Bayowski said the organization has donated thousands of dollars throughout the last 39 years.

Members of the Mahoning Valley Olde Car Club conferred as they judged a vehicle at the club’s Cars in the Park Car Show and Flea Market on Aug. 6. This is the 39th year for the event.
“We expect to raise over $3,000 from today’s show. We have donated $70,000 to other causes over the years and about $50,000 to hospice, which we just recently included in our donations, Bayowski said. The car show is a judged event, with about 20-25 members of the club serving as judges. First and second places are awarded in 23 classes, along with a Participant’s Choice Award, a President’s Choice Award and two different Best of Show trophies.
The show has several major sponsors, including Snyder’s Antique Auto Parts, Becker Funeral Homes, Udderly Smooth, Flynn Auto Group, Anthony J. Billett Landscape, Valley Insurance Group and WKBN and Fox Youngstown. The event also offered door prizes, food, a 50/50 drawing, a Chinese auction and children’s activities. “We’d like to thank everyone for bringing their cars our and supporting the Mahoning Valley Olde Car Club,” Bayowski said.
