PUMC provides family fun with carnival by ZACK SHIVELY zshively@vindy.com
Poland United Methodist had a Family Fun Carnival in the yard next to the church on Sept. 9. Church member Becca Simon organized the event with help from many other members of the church, including Pastor Ken Griffin. Griffin said the church wanted the event to benefit the community, represent the love of Christ and be inclusive to all people. The church welcomed everyone from the community, expecting 2,500 people after last year’s 1,000 person crowd. The carnival offered many different options. For food and drink, they cooked hot dogs, made lemon shakes and handed out water bottles. The church also had a food trailer that had fair food and snow cones. For playing, children could still use the church’s playground, but the church also provided two bounce castles and an inflatable slide. The church had a tent with numerous carnival games under it, including ring toss, dart throwing and skee ball. Parents and children could earn tickets from

playing these games. The church had a prize table to turn in the tickets earned. Members of the church helped make the event. One member brought her pony for the children to ride. The boy and girl volunteered to assist in the carnival. Luke Schuster of Imperial Drone Services brought a drone for children to see and use. Other members of the church cooked or manned stations in the tent. The carnival also included a station for free identification kit
for the children and an area for the fire department. The former station gave parents a convenient way to get their children’s ID kit. The latter allowed the community to meet some important figures from their fire department. Fire prevention officer Bill O’Hara, Fire Lieutenant John Walsh and firefighter Scott O’hara attended the carnival. The church had their first Family Fun Carnival in 2016 and hope to continue it as an annual event. Simon and Gifford stressed the importance of meeting the com-
munity’s needs and hosting events for Poland. After the carnival, the church will begin planning “Trunk or Treat,“ a safe trick-or-treating event held in the church parking lot.

Easy Street played a concert at the Judge Morley Pavilion on Aug. 16 as a part of Mill Creek’s Live! At the Morley summer concert series. The band covered a number of hit songs, starting with “Route 66“ by Nat King Cole. The audience got to know the Easy Street Little Big Band led by musical director Jeff Sanders and the
groups’ five singers, Maureen Collins, Todd Hancock, James McClellan, Colleen Chance and Natalie Sprouse, over the course of the night. Most of the songs were oldies hits from the 50s and 60s and included both pop and country songs. The crowd enjoyed the show that Easy Street gave them. A older couple danced during the opener and children ran and danced in front of the stage for the majority of the show. Local
artist Leanne Binder received a warm welcome from the audience. When Hancock and the band started Johnny Cash’s “Folsom Prison Blues,“ the crowd happily clapped along. The group also played songs like “Love Me Tender“ and “Heartbreak Hotel“ to commemorate the 40th anniversary of Elvis Presley’s death. The Little Rascals came on

turtle would hide, eat or drink. The group also pointed out other wildlife present in the area, such as caterpillars and a hummingbird. Williams led everyone back inside to meet the eastern box turtle that the nature center has in an observatory room. One of the children found a worm on the ground while in the back area, and Williams fed the worm to the turtle so the children could watch it eat. Then,

Car show benefits valley children By ABBY SLANKER neighbors@vindy.com
The Mahoning Valley Olde Car Club hosted its 39th annual Cars in the Park Car Show and Flea Market in Boardman Park on Aug. 6. More than 300 cars were available for the large crowd to view and get an up close look. “We have around 300 cars from all over the state and from out-of-state from such states as Pennsylvania, Michigan and West Virginia,” said Dave Bayowski, a director of Ma honing Va lley Olde Ca r Club and member in charge of registration. Money raised from the car show is used to help several families throughout the year with children with medical conditions and hospice. “We help several families throughout the year. A portion of the money raised, plus donations, benefits a young person with financial help from medical costs. This year’s beneficiary is Brooklyn Hostetter, a 6-year-old from New Waterford diagnosed with Hypoplastic Left Heart Syndrome two days after her birth. Brooklyn faces several heart surgeries, lifetime medications and many other treatments. We are grateful we
can help her family with her medical costs with money we raise today,” Bayowski said. Bayowski said the organization has donated thousands of dollars throughout the last 39 years. “We expect to raise over $3,000 from today’s show. We have donated $70,000 to other causes over the years and about $50,000 to hospice, which we just recently included in our donations, Bayowski said. The car show is a judged event, with about 20-25 members of the club serving as judges. First and second places are awarded in 23 classes, along with a Participant’s Choice Award, a President’s Choice Award and two different Best of Show trophies. The show has several major sponsors, including Snyder’s Antique Auto Parts, Becker Funeral Homes, Udderly Smooth, Flynn Auto Group, Anthony J. Billett Landscape, Valley Insurance Group and WKBN and Fox Youngstown. The event also offered door prizes, food, a 50/50 drawing, a Chinese auction and children’s activities. “We’d like to thank everyone for bringing their cars our and supporting the Mahoning Valley Olde Car Club,” Bayowski said.
